Australian National Anthem

Know the second verse? Just curious. Obviously the chances of a non-Australian knowing it are minimal, but for the Australians out there, do you actually know it. I myself only learnt it when I came to my current school (lotsa tradition, first public secondary school in Victoria).
EDIT whoops, forgot a poll, just pretend its there. Unless someone can tell me how to add one *trails off hopefully...*

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

I think the question would better be asked as, "How many know there IS a second verse"?
Though the answer is undoubtably more than the number of Americans who know there are more verses to The Star Spangled Banner. ;)

I know it, and I know a lot of people will do what you just did and ask Wikipedia, but I wanna know who actually knew it BEFORE looking it up.

Pfft, I couldn't even tell you my own national anthem's lyrics, let alone the one of any other country.

The thing is, Advance Australia Fair has five verses, and we only sing the first and third (if I recall correctly) as the National Anthem. I am pretty sure that the second verse starts with something like "When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd"...
So when you ask people if they know the second verse, there are two possible answers, really.

Yes, I know the second verse. We learnt it at my primary school.
I havent heard it since i left grade 7. I reckon only the first verse is sung at sporting events so all the american's (who are watching) can remeber it...its impossible for them to remeber too much

i know it -
i spose i musta got it from primary school,
we used to raise the flag every monday morning assembly and sing the anthem, hats off and all that bizzo
i dont remember a time not knowing it, really
but the real question is whether we should dump it in favour of a song about a suicidal bloke who stole some sheep - which is probably best only when sung drunk and not accompanied by john williams

I feel my nationalistic zeal flowing through my vains just reading it! Seriously I didn't know it actually mentioned Commonwealth in it, so I spose the Constitution wouldn't have been the only think that would require amendment if the Republic referendum had passed all those years ago.

Forrest. We had chorals today, we won the instrumental comp but came equal third in the choral part...
Presumably you went (to the school that is, not the chorals)? Or did you teach?

and after all, isn't that what Australia's all about?

The question is not what is Australia but how many people in this world actually know where it is.
Yeah the anthem has heaps and heaps of verses... we just don't sing them.
Advance Australia Fair
Australia's sons let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"
When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Britannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this youthful Commonwealth
Renowned of all the lands;
For loyal sons beyond the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Britannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Which kinda makes it hard to become a Republic when our flag, anthem and constitution are littered with Britain or England every few words...
Anyway.

Firstly, its a joke, most (most, I say) people know what Australia is. It's just what non-australians vote for.
But yeah, maybe theres a reason very few people who hold positions of authority acknowledge those other verses... in all honesty I didn't know about those verses, I was referring to one and three.
Silly British patriotism..

Did anyone watch "Who wants to be a Millionare"?
One of the questions was "Which Australian song begins a verse with this line 'Beneath our Radiant Southern Cross'"
The guy used like 2 life lines on that question alone. Was pathetic. I think everyone should know at least the first line or recognise it from our National Anthem. :headbang:

IMO, the name "Australia" is a little sucky. Sounds lame. Should've stuck with New Holland.

Shouldn't there be a part about keepin' the brown people in their place? Or is that what the last verse is about?
