What would you do?

First off i am -----not defending slavery------ watsoever, i am just asking what would you do in this situation? Say you grow up in a slaveholding family in the 1840's in southern america. Your parents teach you slavery is right, would you hold slaves?? I probably would, but i would treat them well, and maybe pay them, as my family did. (Census records show that in 1860 my direct ancestor Jacob Lindler held 2 hired negro field hands in Lexington County) What would you do?

I'd follow the decree of our crown prince which abolished slavery in 1803.

Try again.

Me and my slaves would be all cool. We would sit around and place checkers and drink root beer.

"Say you grow up in a slaveholding family in the 1840's in southern america."
Hm. So you'd be the idiot son who was filled with strange delusions and was kept hidden away from the rest of the world as an embarrasment to the family. That would prevent you from having to deal with the slaves in the first place, I suppose.

Well, if I were a Danish Citizen (which I am), then obviously, the law would apply to me as well, regardless of where I grew up or was based.

Therefore, I would both ethically and lawfully be required to follow it.

Time to Godwin it up.

Say you grew up in a staunch National Socialist family in the 1930s in Germany. Your parents teach you killing Jews is right, would you kill Jews?

Sometimes, human rights are universal and are not restricted to what you're taught is 'right'.

And that too. I agree.

There are a lot of things your parents teach you that you grow up and believe is wrong. I would probably think that slaveholding was one of those things my parents were wrong about.

If I were to ask a hypothetical question like this, would your answer really be meaningful?

If you grew up in the South, and your parents lived in the South (and weren't Danes, by merit of their illegal activities), how would you be a Danish citizen? I'm sure that you would have to do something more than mail in a half-dozen box tops to apply.

Oooh, a close second, but Argesia still comes out with the win.

They didn't have cardboard boxes back then...

I'd probably beat the shit outta all them negroes whenever they slipped up the slightest bit and only feed em what was necessary so they could work w/o dieing. Then Id join the rebs once the civil war started. Thats what I would do.

Yeah, I'm sure that 1840's southern culture would conceive of such an enlightended idea. Besides then they wouldn't be slaves if you paid them...

Let's be reasonable here. Realistically, if that's all we were taught, how do we know we would think any different. In truth, I'd probably hold slaves, and be damn glad that I did.

Of course the real me is horrified at that idea, but hey, what can I say, gotta be realistic.

Exactly. Back before cardboard was invented, children ripped the tops off of large shipping crates, carefully removed the nails, and then mailed the tops to European countries. Eventually, they were granted citizenship to one of them, and then they couldn't have slaves which allowed them to pwn n00bs over the Internets.

Why is that true? I was taught when I was a kid that gays were evil, but I don't still think so. In fact, I never really believed that, but that's why my CCD teachers would all teach me.
