MSNBC announces Patriot Act passes Senate
I can't find a link yet, but I was watching MSNBC and they are reporting the Patriot Act renewal passing in the Senate 89-10. It will go to the House and is expected to pass and signed by Bush by the end of next week.
Our leaders really know how to depress me. :(
Here we go.

That large a margin truly is depressing. Only 4 senators voted against it. :(

Okay, so this means what anyway? That the Government can erode civil liberties or what?

There has never, I repeat NEVER, been a documented case of anyones civil liberties being infringed by The Patriot Act.
This is a Democratic smoke and mirrors show designed to piss people off. If the Patriot Act is so bad, why did so many Senators vote for it?

That's like saying there are no receipts for stolen goods. If the goods are stolen, there will no receipt. If the Patriot Act does not require a court to publish its proceedings or allows the executive branch to circumvent the courts altogether, there will be no record of the case.

This sounds a bit like falling off a skyscraper and trying to convince yourself everything is OK because you haven't hit the ground yet.

If this is a Democrat smoke and mirrors show then why did only three Democrats vote against it?

Well.. this is ironic, I'm doing a paper on the PATRIOT Act right now. You see, I'm against, the tools work fine if regulated... but some of it leaves it open to abuse. You see, none of these tools can be used unless it is suspected they are related to terrorism... so once they have possible proof you could be a terrorist, well it's open game from there. If you notice... two portions of the act have been ruled against in courts.

Further evidence that Republicans are big-government authoritarian liberals, and Democrats are spineless tagalongs. I just wish one would implode already, hardly matters which. Both would be better, though.

Huh,
How in the hell do you define Civil liberties?
I am a staunch conservative, and I know bullshit when I see it.
The PA is bullshit of the highest order, it is as un-American as it gets.
I bet you think cameras on street corners and a national ID are a good idea too.
Where you allow for the reasonable and legal chance for a persons civil liberties to be trampled upon it will happen----simply because it hasnt happened en masse yet means nothing.

Democratic smoke and mirrors? The vast majority of them voted for it too.
Maybe the Senators voted for it because they want to get more power. Obvious.
Why didn't more Democrats vote against this?
Because they're not a real opposition. Both parties are the same.
What, you were expecting the two (Read: one)-party system to actually disagree with itself?!
Well said. Surely you aren't going to be complicit with living in a dictatorship for too much longer, are you?
Revolt now!

The fact of the matter is that a lot of the PATRIOT Act contains provisions that make it easier for the CIA, FBI and other intelligence agencies to communicate with each other, tools that are really are needed to fight terrorism. The parts that could be used to infringe on civil liberties are a small part of the act. My guess is that because there aren't any documented cases of abuse, senators are mostly ignoring those parts because so many people support it that they would lose more by voting against it than for it.

If the American people had any backbone they would crucify any Democratic politician in the polls who voted for the Patriot Act. That "small part" really matters as there is a threat to our civil liberties. Anything that gets into the realm of "secret" has to make you suspicious as it is a nice cover for actions that the populace would not support...
Of course many probably don't care, willing to trade a false sense of security for losing some of our rights. Civil liberties have been assualted many times in the past and they will be infringed many times in the future. Despite what many claim the Bill of Rights in a paper document easily ignored by fearful men and those who believe the end is what matters, whatever the means.
