Holy crap. That should so be illegal. Seriously, shouldn't there be a ton of laws against something like that? Not that the Pentagon would care, I guess, but still.

There are already suspicions that sonar causes whales to beach themselves (http://archives.cnn.com/2000/NATURE/07/28/beached.whales/). This can't be healthy for the environment.

Uh ... why would I want to "weep?"

This part of the article was highly interesting as well: "New Scientist says the DARPA work is controversial, but also points out that work with animal implants also has a potential benefit for medicine. Understanding more about the brain's electrical signals could one day result in implants to control a prosthetic limb to overcome paralysis."

Since When did the military care about the environment? Gits.

I'm not going to condemn the military as a whole for this--from what I understand, the idea that sonar and the beached whales were linked is a fairly new one. And I'd like to think, as the article points out, that this research could have some benefits for people with prosthetics. But I wonder why they can't do that research instead of doing what they're doing with the sharks.

Uh...Eut-a lot of folks would rather see the plan backfire and cause sharks to go on murderous man-eating rampages, than the have it succeed and help the pentagon and humanity. Then they'd have something to talk about that would make them feel good.

They already made a rat go left or right by remote control, and have taught monkeys to control robotic arms and even play games with their brainwaves. Brain controlled prosthetics and "bridges" from brain to muscle that overcome shattered or diseased nerves are not far behind.

Yes, yes, yes, BUT please - you're not trying to tell me that we can't get this kind of research without the Pentagon turning sharks into military supplies?

There has been research into nerve-controlled prosthetic limbs for years, hell, if I'm not very greatly mistaken, such prosthetics are on the market already. And while I'm positive that that research also used animals, at least it did so only for that specific medical purpose.
Which is something else entirely than selling shark spy machines to the public by tacking on a phrase about "Ooh, look, we're totally doing this for the good of mankind!"

It's all going to be a moot point when genetics finally figures out how to use "T" cells to regenerate missing limbs and organs. Not only that, but if you think this is controversial, just wait until the geneticists are able to create "designer organisims" to perform specific tasks. You ain't seen nothin' yet!

So? Whales chased my ancestors out of the ocean millions of years ago, and they managed to cope.

When you do something well, whatever it is, there is something to take pride in. I can't speak for how well he killed people and broke things, but someone who knows what they are about and does it well is superior to a bumbler who tries to build a web of cushy lies to hide the reality of his actions.

Looks like the Pentagon has two problems: too much money and too much access to B horror movies. Let's cut their funding by 40% and see if they can keep themselves inline.

No, you got it all wrong. Boy Scouts care about the environment. Soldiers care about their uniforms.

I predict that the Pentagon will soon begin research into the "Snake Plane X-2" (The X makes is xtreme), and at that point we will realize that the world is being run by a shadowy cabal of Special Effects technicians.

I will support the research of the Snake Plane if Sam Jackson is the one to pilot, or Chuck Norris, but he might roundhouse kick the snakes, he doesn't like them too much. So back to Sam Jackson.
