Which city has/had the best music scene? (Part 2)

The first one of these went okay, but there were a lot of people who went "Why wasn't City X on the poll?" So I figured I needed to make a new one to accomodate all of those people. Perhaps after this I will make a third, and then a fourth which encompasses the top choices of the first three threads, to find the best city for music of all time.

The first thread can be found here:

Does Austin really have its own music scene? Seems everyone goes there for SXSW, but they're not actually from there. Does that count?

And anyone who votes Nashville sucks.

Does Austin really have its own music scene? The people who nominated it in the other thread insist that it does, though they were fairly vague about it.

Hmm. Voted Washington for the hardcore scene, but hats off to New Orleans for its influence on the blues (and jazz, though i'm not really into it).

Oh, and Sydney doesn't have much of a music scene, I don't think.

Don't they have a psychobilly scene or something? Or is that Texas as a whole? I dunno.

It's not much of a "scene" though. When I think "scene", I think of a coherent style fairly unique to the area. Sydney, and by extension Australia doesn't really have much of that. (Well, Adelaide seems to have a pretty vibrant '77 punk scene, and I think Queensland has a hardcore one but apart from that, I can't think of much.)

Queensland, according to Wikipedia...

And then there's The Birthday Party (Nick Cave), who were from Melbourne. We occasionally produce standout acts, but they don't seem to be part of a bigger scene.

Philadelphia has a really good music scene, and I've never been to any of the other cities, except for D.C. but I was a wee lad and don't really remember any music scene.

Savannah also has a nice music scene but sadly not my taste. Jazz, and country fans would love it here.

As a resident of both Manchester and Liverpool, I can assure you that Manchester has a far better music scene.

The Beatles were around in the 60s, the Madchester scene of the 80s/90s is pushing it a bit as it is, but to use the Beatles to give the impression that Liverpool has a better music scene is pushing it. (Though there some other good Scouse bands)

I've been in the flats there though, they're not bad :p

That said, it might have been just as well to put the M62 corridor, as Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool all have pretty good music scenes.

yeah, I'm going to be the only one to say this, but I'm putting down Boston (really New England, but it qualifies as Boston) Still a strong Ska scene, which I hate, but oh well. Also a good hardcore scene, a punk scene, and a few other growing scenes

YES Austin has a music scene outside of SXSW! I live here and I can tell you that it is a rare afternoon where there are not more than fifty concerts going on at various venues through-out the city, and most of them will be bands that got their start in austin.

Have you ever heard of:
Bob Shneider
Willie Nelson
Robert Earl Keen
Los Lobos
Los Lonely Boys
Calexico
Eliza Gilkinson
Sheryl Crow
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Patsy Cline
Bruce Springsteen
Dave Matthews
Guy Forsyth
Kasey CHambers
Lenny Kravitz
Lyle Lovett
Nickel Creek
Rufus Wainwright
String Cheese Incident
The Wallflowers

Every one either got their start in, or were influenced by the Austin Music Scene, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head that are popular outside of Austin.

Chances are, if you listen to alternative rock or country then your favorite band is 'an Austin band'

<snip>

I remember an interview I heard with Natasha Borzilova of Bering Straight. She said thay went to America from Russia to break into the music business and were told, "Get back on to I-20 and head South until you reach Austin, Texas. You can't start in the music industry here." Austin has been touting itself as the "Live Music Capital of America" for years.

What's your problem with Music City USA?

Walk into any dive and see a professional quality band and/or singer, give them 5 years and many will be on the charts.

From Music Row (the major labels, some small labels, as well as BMI, ASCAP, SESAC) to Broadway (Tootsie's, Legends, Wildhorse Saloon, etc.)... Nashville lives and breathes music.
