Where have you been? Tell me all about the places you've visited and what they're like. Which were your favorites and why? Which were not so great and why? Where have you always wanted to go, but havent yet had the chance?
I've had the pleasure of visiting 24 states in the past year and it was truly a great experience. I'd have to say Wyoming and Colorado were my favorites. I'd love to have a ranch in Wyoming. Yeehaw!
I've also been to Haiti, Jamaica and Mexico. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. They had a town called Hell in Haiti....I had my picture taken at the Hell post office. I also sent a few letters postmarked from there too;)
I want to visit Alaska and Hawaii, Boston and Maine, Canada, Italy and London. Help me choose some other wonderful places by telling me about where you've been. All crazy stories are welcome....remember....what happens in <insert location here> stays in <insert location here>.
Oookkaaayyy.
I've been to all 10 provinces of Canada.
American states I've been to: Texas, Florida, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois
Other Countries: Switzerland, UK, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Jamaica
And I'm 18 :D

Oy...k. give me a sec to think about this.
Connecticut, Massachusets, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, DC, Deleware, Virginia, West Virginia, Texas (briefly...long story I may share if motivated), Florida, Hawaii, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico
Other countries: Haiti, British Virgin Islands, Dutch west indies (Aruba, Curacao, etc), Costa Rica, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, England...um...I think that is it.
Favorites? Hawaii was amazing. I mean. come on. Hawaii. What more do I need to say?
Costa was amazing to. We stayed at a place with natural hot springs, got trashed every night, and just relaxed.
Worst? I was really sick in Switzerland, so I hated it, but want to give it a second chance. And state wise, West Virginia.

might i suggest Amsterdam in the summer? its beautiful, clean, friendly, very very pretty with all those canals and stuff. you could go down the road to Utrecht for a more upmarket experience
i'd also recommend Edinburgh, Scotland. just came back from a 3 day trip there myself and its just a lovely place. most of the city centre (the new town and old towns at least) are architecturally stunning (speaking of which i just love the architecture in amsterdam!) being georgian and all very regal-looking. there's pretty much a landmark or at least something to draw the eye down every street, the people are friendly, the castle is amazing, and... its just a very cool place. the surrounding countryside is stunning, too. i could post some pics maybe later :)
other than there, i've been to California twice (once to San Francisco, where i fell in love with the place, and once on a 2 week roadtrip from LA to Sacramento), New York twice, Portugal, Zurich in Switzerland, France a bunch of times, Germany a bunch of times too... and thats about it. i love travelling but the problem is its so damn expensive :(

though there were some real nice places along the way, too. but i will admit that sacramento wasn't the nicest city i've ever been to (though all i can really remember is running from public building to public building... libraries, post offices, cafes.... to get back into the air conditioning - we're british... we're not built to withstand temperatures above 105F... we melt! :D)
LA was just kinda nasty. i remember being disappointed with hollywood boulevard in that only about 5 blocks of were actually anywhere near nice - the rest of it was littered with gun shops and liquour stores... and churches! so many churches, big expensive ones too. ah man it was weird.
san francisco was just lovely - i can't actually think of anything specific i didn't like at the time. and belmont was even swankier :P

North American Places:
USA: Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Florida, Iowa, and Mississippi
Favorite would have to be Chicago, Illinois and Ithaca, New York. Least favoirte, Detroit, Michigan. Farm country is all good, anywhere.
Canada: Ontario
London and Niagra Falls own.
Eurozone:
Countries: United Kingom (Britian and Scotland), Spain, Sweden and Finland.
Scotland beats the pants off of Britian. Spain is good, anywhere. Just stay away form la costa del sol. Sweden, Uppsalla. Finland, kind of everywhere. I'd have to say Åbo is pretty great.
North Africa:
Countries: Morocco
Just don't bother. Really. Unless you wanna buy a cool camel drums and a rug.
Born in Adelaide, moved to Perth when I was 4 or 5, then moved here when I was about 10. Seen most of the interesting places in these states. Been to Sydney too.

USA:
California, Nevada, New York State, Illinois, Wisconsin, Arizona, Pennsylvania.
Canada:
Nova Scotia (only briefly), Ontario
Europe:
Mainland Spain, Menorca, Lanzarote, Portugal, England, Scotland and Ireland (of course).
Out of all of those my time in Toronto, Ontario was my favourite - it was absolutely stunning, everyone was so friendly, the place was so bustling and clean - and I would consider moving there some time in the future (or, preferably, if I had enough cash I'd live there half the year or something). I also really liked San Francisco, CA; really beautiful city.
This year we're planning to go to New York or Vancouver, then back to Vegas, back to SF from there (we have friends there) and then home. When we can afford both the time and the money it costs, we intend to travel around Australia - that's my dream destination.
However, I've still yet to find a place I like better than Northern Ireland :)

favorite big city; portland oregon, public transportation, affordable, lots of stuff for broke people, not easy to find work though.
favorite place ever lived, railroad company town at norden on donner summit, snowed 20 ft on the ground every winter, all the houses connected by inclosed hallways, all gone now.
colfax and truckee both pretty good too. started taking long walks in the woods by myself in truckee year i started kindergarten. also snowed 15th july that year.
colfax longest any one place growing up. long walks magical sacred spots stevens trail, also walked colfax to grass valley/nevada city. got ride back. (25miles)
favorite place working, out there in the nevada desert.
living on the boat in lake union seattle was a trip. but seattle not my favorite town. monorail was good and a few other things but not good for work or being poor either one. (at the time i was there)
auburn (cali) was probably my least favorite place when i lived there. rather be there then here in roseville now though. everyplace chainges so what i remember of places i've been probably has nothing to do with what any of them, other then where i am, are like now.

Should I know or care who the hell George Mikes is? And just because people mean different things to what they say, doesn't make it a synonym. It makes it a mistake. It's like using Texas and USA interchangeably. Looks stupid. And is.

"When people say England, they sometimes mean Great Britain, sometimes the United Kingdom, sometimes the British Isles-but never England." - George Mikes
Not in my experience; when people say 'England' they mean 'England' (usually a wistful, village green sort of England where no-one's house gets burgled but England nethertheless)
English football fans say 'England' and mean 'England', but they pronounce it Eng-Ger-Land.
And when people refer to the 'English', 'Welsh' or 'Scottish' they are making a specific effort to exclude those peoples who are also defined as 'British', or vice versa. For example, tennis star Andy Murray is 'British' to the English media, until he fails to win Wimbledon, at which point he will revert to being 'Scottish'.
The two common mistakes are thinking that the United Kingdom and Great Britain are the same thing and that Northern Ireland is a part of Great Britain

Hmmm, gotta think about this one...
North America -
USA (Boston and the mountains to the North)
Canada (Calgary, Vancouver, Banff, Jasper and Whistler)
Europe -
Germany - Every Bundesland, pretty much every major city at some point. I have lived in Friedrichshafen and Kassel.
Austria - Vienna, Innsbruck and numerous ski resorts
France - Normandy, Paris and Parc Asterix, which when I was 8 rocked so much
Holland - Amsterdam, Den Haag and a few other places, although its mostly just travelled through
Belgium - Ghent, Brugge, Brussels, which is a crazy city and the battle field of waterloo and quatre bras
Denmark - Copenhaagen, Lego Land :D which was feckin awsome when you're a kid. You get to drive round a little road system in an electric car and, being from the UK, I of course drove on the left until the loud speaker said "English boy drive on the other side!", Still got my legoland license dammit! :D
Norway - Geilo (sp?) to go skiing. Quality hut for the airport
Switzerland - Luzern, Bern, Zurich, Geneve, St. Gallen, Engelberg and a few other places
Luxembourg - Driven though and stopped at a petrol station. Bagettes were v.nive though
Lichtenstein - Nice place, although if you lie down and stretch out you can touch all the borders at once.
Italy - Well, I only went there after taking the wrong wrong in Austria, but the 20m we went into Italy for were nice.
Ireland and the UK obviously.
Best Food - Norway (reindeer tastes so nice)
Best Beer - Canada  Nice little micro brewery which produced a n indescribably good honey beer.
Nicest people - Denmark
Best skiing :D - Canada, Whistler is feckin awsome
Best girls - Tough choice, but there was an Austrian snowboarder girl once... *goes misty eyed*
Rudest - Well the bunch of Irish-Americans who took offence to me being English weren't exactly nice...

Canada: Only Algonquin Park north of Toronto for a week long canoe trip...
UK: I spent a layover in Heathrow... didn't have time to explore unfortunately, but I hope to get there sometime in the next 5 years.
Other: Morocco- spent two months there on a study abroad trip- friggin awesome and I would go back in a heartbeat. The only part of the country I didn't get to see was the area around Tangier and the Strait of Gibraltar.
Ever since the Morocco trip I made a promise to myself that I would spend every vacation block I took from work visiting another country. Egypt is up next (I got hooked up to go to school there this summer) and who knows after that... I'm going to see if I can't hit up Greece while I'm over there.

and i could say places like Scotland or Wales but i don't count em cos they're part of this here island (and for the latter i don't count places i've lived)
though thats an impressive list Kel

Best Food - gotta be the USA if only for this little steakhouse and grill somewhere in LA which did the most amazingly tasty BBQ ribs.... mmm i still dream about them! :P
either there or holland - they know how to do a good chinese chicken satay there (odd choice but had it a lot... though i may have been mondo stoned the whole time i was there so my opinon is slightly biased by munchies :p)
Best Beer - definatley holland. hertog jan!
Nicest people - san francisco would get my vote if it wasn't for one total bitch of a woman in a shop (stupid story: won't tell) so i think its a tie between germany or holland again. i loved that in amsterdam you could do pretty much whatever you liked and people didn't care :)
Best skiing - don't ski. silly rich-person sport... *grumbles*
Best girls - santa monica beach, LA *drools* ;)
Rudest - USA in general i think, but its a tough one

Hm, I live in Europe (Germany), so I have a bit of a proximity advantage on the European getaways:
been to Spain (numerous summer vacations as a kid), France (Normandy, Britanny, Alsace), Ireland, The Netherlands (Amsterdam), Czechoslovakia (Prague, and yes, back then it was still Czechoslovakia), Poland (Cracow, Auschwitz/Birkenau), Hungary, Switzerland (well, we lived just one hour from the Swiss border, so that doesn't really count as very special), Austria, Italy (Florence, Siena, Pisa), Greece, Turkey (Istanbul).
Outside Europe: Singapore, Malaysia (both on a university field trip, actually), Bolivia, Canada (Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Niagara-on-the-Lake, rural Ontario), and the US.
US states: Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming (which, btw, was my least favourite state, must have been those horrible elkhorn ranges :p), Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan.
It's hard to pick favourites, because I liked all those trips. Those that do stand out a bit above the rest are Bolivia (the breathtaking Altiplano landscape), Ireland (the beautiful western coast), Auschwitz/Birkenau (for obvious reasons), Florence (Botticelli!), Death Valley, and my favourite repeat destination, the south western US (the Colorado plateau).
Btw, the friendliest people? Canada, hands down. :)
On top of my random list of places I want to see:
Paris, Rome, NYC, US East Coast, US South, the Dakotas (Badlands!), Denmark, Vienna, Australia (mainly the cities, strangely enough), New Zealand.
And, to satisfy my love for barren, desert-y landscapes:
Iceland, Mongolia, the Atacama desert (it nearly broke my heart when I stood in sight of the Chilean border, with the Atacama starting some mere 20 kilometers - and 4000 altitude meters lower - behind that, but couldn't go there *sniff*), Jordan (Petra), Central Asia (the Taklamakan, with Samarkand and Bukhara; the historic Silk Road), and the Tibesti and Ennedi regions in Libya and Chad. *dreams*

Sadly, I've hardly travelled within my own country. Too damn expensive! It's cheaper to go elsewhere! In Canada I've been to BC (all over), Alberta (all over), and the NWT (just the parts north of Yellowknife). That's it:(
Elsewhere...Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras (very briefly), Belize, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and lately, Cuba. Most of those countries, more than once, except Honduras. I've never been off the American continent.
Oh yeah, when I was younger, my parents used to take us to Montana and once into Washington. It is my great shame.

Spitting distance from Sac State. El Dorado Hills is a nice area, I have family friends out there. (Technically I guess I should say my boyfriend has family friends out there, but I've known both his family and the family in El Dorado Hills for several years, and I don't know what else to call them. :p )

Cool. They've only been there about a year since her Dad retired from the army... he used to be stationed at Irwin outside *shudder* Barstow... My impression of California has greatly improved in the last year to say the least. And I guess I gotta start calling them my family too at some point eh?
yay coincidences:D

I didn't realize there was anything in Barstow. ;) If that was the only place you'd visited in CA before El Dorado Hills, I can see how your impression of the state might not have been so good at first.

Let's see, I've been to...
Texas (I live in Austin), Louisiana, New Mexico, Maine, Missouri, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Virginia, Washington D.C., Massachusetts, Arkansas, Illinois, New Jersey, Toronto (Canada), and over most of west Germany.
I liked Germany the most, but that's probably because it was so different from the US. Toronto hardly counts as a different country... :p

Okay, to the best of my memory:
March 19, 1976: Born in Madison, WI (big college town... great town)
Birth - 1978: Lake Mills, WI (small town near Madison... was there while Dad got his second Master's from UW... mom taught music).
1978-1979: Nashville, TN (hot)
During that time period we apparently went to visit my grandparents in Peru (grandpa was the head civil engineer for a global company), but i don't remember much about Peru.
1979-80: Grand Forks, North Dakota (cold. My first taste memory is from Happy Joe's Pizza... I swear I can still taste that pizza).
1980-81: Minong, Wisconsin (cold)
1981-1994: Minocqua, WI (cold, tourist area)
During the time spent growing up in Minocqua, we went on family outings to Disney World, Disneyland (and SoCal area), Washington, DC and Fiesta Texas (think near San Antonio... we were visiting Uncle Dave).
1994-1998: Madison, WI (UW-Madison, undergrad. Great time.)
During my time there I went to Cancun in 1996 (family) and Cancun again (with sis) in 1998.
Went to New York, Pittsburgh, Wash DC, Boston as part of the UW Concert Choir tour in 1997.
OH, I forgot to mention the trips to Baja California in the late 1980s during the trips to SoCal.
okay
1998-99: Chicago, IL (first job)
1999-2000: Minocqua, WI (mama's cooking)
In the summer of 2000, sis and I spent a week in France and two weeks in Italy.
2000-Present: Nashville, TN (grad school and then work)
During this time, the only major trip I've been on was a week-long school-required trip to Prague.
So... I've been pretty much everywhere in the US except the Pacific Northwest.
Countries I've been to (not including time spent in airports, or flying over places):
Mexico
Peru
France
Italy
Canada
Czech Republic
Slovakia (spent a day there)
I want to visit Alaska and Hawaii, Boston and Maine, Canada, Italy and London. Help me choose some other wonderful places by telling me about where you've been. All crazy stories are welcome....remember....what happens in <insert location here> stays in <insert location here>.
The friendliest people I've come across in my travels have, hands down, come from Africa. I always tell this to people who ask me where to spend their next vacation: South Africa. It's gorgeous, with great cities, people, and plenty to do. Try Cape Town to start, and make some forays inland. At least give it some thought. I've spent about half my life in Africa, and it irks me to no end that people refuse to travel anywhere there because they have all these misconceptions about what it will be like.
Europe:
Rep. Ireland, UK (England, Scotland, Wales, NI), France, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, Romania, Hungary
N America:
USA (Pennsylvania, Illinois), Canada (Ontario)
S America:
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay
What's Switzerland like?
It's fun and festive for a while. I was born in Geneva actually and moved to Canada when I was 3. I went back a couple of years ago to visit.
As for my favourite place... I'd love to say Jamaica but I have to go with the homeland, India.

Massachusetts
New Jersey
New York (Born and living in NYC)
Pennsylvania

Best Food - gotta be the USA if only for this little steakhouse and grill somewhere in LA which did the most amazingly tasty BBQ ribs.... mmm i still dream about them! :P
Yeah, ribs are great. The best barbecue in the US is in Kansas City, Memphis and Texas (TX is known for beef brisket). The best cheese is in Wisconsin, of course. hehe
Best girls - santa monica beach, LA *drools* ;)
Yessir, I wish they all could be California girls.
Rudest - USA in general i think, but its a tough one
Hey, I resemble that remark! hehe

Ok...
Born in :Scotland, (Glasgow)
Lived in :Scotland (grew up in Glasgow)
England, (at Uni, Oxford)
Switzerland, (when I was five, 'cos of dad's Job, Zurich)
Syria (Studying Arabic in Damascus)
Visited :Ireland, France, Andorra, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Liechtenstein, Italy, The Vatican City, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Greece, Yugoslavia (when it was all still Yugoslavia), Turkey, Armenian, Georgia, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, USA (Florida), Iran,
going to Tunisia in a fortnight, so may as well count that too.
My favourite by far has been Damascus, although travelling in Syria would've been much harder without Arabic. Egypt is gorgeous too, and requires less Arabic, 'cos it's much touristier (which is unfortunate). In Europe, I love Paris, and I have a terribly soft spot for Budapest.
I got my first (and only) three nosebleeds ever in Warsaw, and was hungover in Slovakia (only there for a day), so they're not so well remembered.
In Istanbul me and a friend were more or less taken hostage by some prostitutes.... long story...and no we weren't looking for prostitutes...damn our naivety! Apart from that, though, it was great!
