How do I start a Gay-Straight alliance in my school?

More specifically, in one that tends to lean towards intolorance towards gays. I myself am bisexual, and thus see myself as the best person to start a Gay-Straight alliance. As seemingly one of the few registered Republicans that believes in gay rights, I find myself caught between a rock and a hard place. I don't know the administration's views on homosexuals and whatnot, and don't want to upset and/or cause chaos through my attempts to create a Gay-Straight alliance. So how should I go about it? Any tips?

My advice is to make sure you won't get in trouble for it before you try it.

Well, see, therein lies the problem. To avoid getting in trouble, I'd have to speak to the administration. But they're the same dudes who can put me in trouble if what I'm trying to do is immoral in their eyes and they stop it and whatnot. =/

Figure out the procedure at your high school for starting any group or club, and the regulations governing the process. Follow them as closely as you can, as if you were starting any other club, but be especially careful so that the administration doesn't have any excuse to sabotage your efforts.

Uh. Yeah. That's why you want to talk to em first. :)

More specifically, in one that tends to lean towards intolerance towards gays. I myself am bisexual, and thus see myself as the best person to start a Gay-Straight alliance. First, glad to hear that not all Republicans are like George Wahabi Bush, yimach sh'mo v'zichro (may his name and memory be blotted out) when it comes to gays. I'd lost hope.

If the student body leans towards intolerance, then upsetting and/or causing chaos should be treated as inevitable. I'm not saying to go out of your way to piss people off, but if a few feathers get ruffled, don't get your nose out of joint over it. You're at war here, and the enemy is intolerance.

The Supreme Court has ruled that freedom of speech is not shed at the school door, so I wouldn't worry about official administrative action against your organization.

That said, just go ahead and act like you're running any other organization.
