Good Film Scenes

Okie, The New Diabolicals has the film endings covered, how about some scenes? Either good or bad. What's given you the willies, made you cry, or made you want to vomit with rage?
I'll start:
The Good:
1] G.I. Jane. When she smashes the bat on the ring-out bell, I get goosebumps. You can feel all of her rage and frustration coming alive. It's gorgeous.
2] Vanilla Sky. When they're in the car about to have the wreck. There's a lot of fear in that scene that culminates in a rather bland, explosionless car wreck. It's practically the perfect knuckle biter.
3] Contact. "They should have sent a poet." I shouldn't have to say any more.
4] One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The "put yer hand in the air, chief" scene. Brilliant!
5] 12 Monkeys. The introduction of Brad Pitt's character in the asylum. Those scenes showed me that Pitt actually *can* act. I'm glad he broke away from that "Legends of the Fall" pretty boy mold he started to get himself into.
6] Ransom. When they're driving and Gary Sinese is giving the speech about the morlocs and the eloy. Goosebumps.
The Bad:
1] The Matrix. "Welcome to the desert of the real." I could sense every goth/emo idiot in the room cream themselves over that one horrible line. I walked out of the theater and didn't see the rest of that movie until long after it came out on DVD.
2] Constantine. The turning and flipping off of Satan. *YAAAWWNN* If you know the comic, you know what I mean. It didn't ruin the movie, but it could have been done a hell of a lot better.
3] Time Machine (remake). Jeremy Irons is one of my absolute all time favorite actors, but even he couldn't make that final scene with him worthwhile.
So .... how about ya'll?
Split Second -
Location: Police Morgue
Set up: Neil Duncan plays a straight Cop. Bookworm. Rutger Hauer is the boarderline Psycho.
Scene: Neil Duncan runs through a solid steel door that was literally burst apart in the center. gun out, he looks for the killer that he and Rutger Hauer were chasing. a second later, he turns back to the door as he finally realizes what he ran through.
Rutger: "Did you see him? Did you see him?"
Neil: "That was no "him," that was a Fucking IT!"
Rutger examines the door
Neil: "I emptied my gun and it still got away."
Rutger moves down the corridor, down to Central PD. Neil looks at his small revolver as he slowly follows Rutger.
Neil: "We need bigger guns... we need BIG FUCKING GUNS, I mean we need huge FUCKING GUNS... Harley! WE NEED BIG FUCKING GUNS!"

Good scenes in no particular order
Al Pacino verbally humiliating Kevin Spacy in Glengarry Glen Ross
Lineup and police interrogation from The Usual Suspects
The scene in Donnie Darko where his girlfriend gets run over outside Roberta Sparrow's house and Donnie shoots Frank.
LA Confidential's final big shootout scene.
Man on Fire when Denzel Washington is walking across the bridge at the end of the movie and you it's over. So great :(

A few of my favourites:
The Dish - Playing cricket in a radio transmitter to be used a few days later to capture the first moon landing. Only the Aussies...
or
Playing Hawaii Five O theme tune as the US national anthem.
The Big Lebowski - "Don't fuck with the Jesus" priceless.
and another one from the same directors
Fargo - Man being fed into a garden shredder. Cuts to the scene just to see the foot being put in. Ouch, but very funny.
Patlabor 2 - As the snow starts to fall and the whole city becomes still, to a magnificent score.
The Duellists - The opening smallsword duel, brilliant.
as is
Rob Roy - The final duel. You just want Tim Roth to get battered big time.
The Usual Suspects, Alien and Bullit (best chase ever) also deserve honourable mentions.

The scene in Ju-On where the ex-Cop is lured away from his task by the sound and image of his daughter.
The resolution of Danial's and his daughter Lara's story arc in Crash.
The end of Steamboy
The showdown in the Hospital with Mad Dog in Hard Boiled
The Warehouse scene in Hard Boiled
Bullet In the Head, the scene (more or less) from which the movie takes it's title.
The ending in the Director's Cut of Bladerunner.
Indiana's "it's not the years, it's the milage" scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark
The snapping jaws scense in Ice Pirates
Matrix getting off the plane early in Commando
Keith David dealing with the cops in Men At Work
The play in Whale Rider

The helicopters coming in to "The Ride of the Valkyries" in Apocalypse Now. That scene is the very definition of horrible beauty.
The fax machine beatdown in Office Space is one of the hands-down funniest scenes in all of moviedom. And later, when Samir walks out to his car, drunk, singing "Back up in your ass with the resurrection" always cracks me up.
Heat - the big shootout scene.
Bullitt, Blues Brothers and Ronin - Car chase scenes.
Shaun of the Dead - trying to kill the inn-keeper to the sound of Queen.
Metoroporisu - the climax to the sound of Ray Charles.
Serenity - travelling back to meet the Alliance in space
Kill Bill vol.1 - The Bride against the Crazy 88's
Oooh... There's so many to choose from, but that's some at least.

American History X : opening scene *freaks out* I could feel my teeth on that friggin curb *body shivers*
The Omen: When Damien's mom takes him to the zoo and all the animals start goin nuts
Trainspotting: in the kitchen the morning after Spud carps himself in the bed... hilarious

Why has nobody mentioned the vent scene in Alien?
Or the first time the aliens attack the marines in Aliens?
Or the machine gun scene in Aliens: director's cut
Or the final showdown in Aliens
Or Hudson's freak out in Aliens
......hmmm....
.....
The trip through space/time at the end of 2001: A space oddessy
The Lilliput Ash clones in Army of Darkness
Almost every other scene in Army of Darkness
I'll think of more
The corpse trying to sit up and scream in Se7en (or however they spell it) still gives me a jolt.
Malcolm MacDowell finding the sort who's head has been grafted to a pig in O Lucky Man! just comes out of nowhere.
Why has nobody mentioned the vent scene in Alien?

Best Scenes:
The scene in The Shawshank Redemption when every man stares silently at the speakers as it plays Mozart.
Robin Wright Penn's scene in Unbreakable when she asks her husband if he's been with another woman during their separation. For that matter, the scene where he tells her "I had a bad dream" was beautiful.
The scene in The Incredibles where Bob Parr gets the message to go to Nomanisan Island and looks up at all the pictures of Mr. Incredible.
And of course, how can you forget the juxtoposition of Al Pacino and a sequence of killings in The Godfather.
Worst:
The oral sex scene in Team America: World Police. I laughed hysterically through most of this movie, but that scene was just painful to sit through.
The dinner scene in The Other Sister was crushingly, horrificly painful to watch. It just made my skin crawl. I can't tell if this is what the scene was supposed to do, but I was very uncomfortable.

I almost forgot--the scene in High Fidelity where Tim Robbins (Ian) gets beaten down, when Todd Louiso smacks him across the jaw with the telephone and Ian's teeth pop out like Chiclets and then Lousio pulls the air conditioner out of the wall and slams it on him is classic.

"The Good,The Bad and The Ugly" Eli Wallach is in the bath tub and suprisingly shoots the guy who came for revenge- he says "If you're gonna shoot, shoot-dont talk".
Same movie-when Clint Eastwood tosses Eli Wallach a shovel and says "There are two types of people in this world-those with guns and those who dig".
Roy Sheider seeing the shark for the first time in "Jaws"- that sudden sickening awareness-I think the cigarette drops out of his mouth and he stammers "we're gonna need a bigger boat".

American Psycho: when the ATM tells him to feed it a kitten... holy crap (then again that movie is filled with crazy scenes)
read the book Its quite a ride
The bathtub scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and, for that matter, the scene with 'Spiderman' where Mr. Duke mouths the words, along with his narration, "...he was lying to me!" :)
I'll agree with you all about Man on Fire. That movie is a gorgeous work of art.
For the best scene by far I've seen lately, the farewell speech to the Leper Colony near the end of the Motorcycle Diaries. This is another beautiful movie.
Ahhh.... Gus's death scene, in Lonesome Dove. If you've ever read the book, and I have a dozen times, it'll choke you right up.
Worst scene in the history of film? The song and dance at the end of the 40 Year Old Virgin. Words fail me about how dumb this is.
It was a tossup, but I think that one was dumber than the whole 'Causality' speech by the Oracle to Neo in the second Matrix movie. Sheer agony to sit through. I think it actually made me dumber.
Honorable mention, for sheer stupidity, goes to the one in Reign of Fire when Matthew McConaghey(?) leaps off the building with the axe? CHAAAARGE! Oh... You got fucking EATEN?! How cheesy was that?
Righteous Munchee-Love

Sin City - the whole movie is one piece of sick, twisted art, but with great colours ;)
Danny the Dog - opening action scene one of the best I´ve ever seen in a martial arts movie
The Pianist - towards the end, when he nearly gets shot by Russians for wearing a Wehrmacht coat
Dog Soldiers - "Oh my god, they will never fit in again!"
...are among the recent ones I can remember at the moment.

How about when Gus explained his disdain for "surly bartenders"?...or when he refused to let the doctor talk him into amputating the other leg-"I like to kick a pig once in a while"...
That movie/book was full of good scenes-I never knew why it didnt get more attention or acclaim. Tommy Lee Jones, Angelica Huston, Danny Glover- all played great roles. Robert Duvall was great.

It was a 'Made for TV' movie, was it not? And like nine hours long, besides. I've always assumed that was why. Besides, McMurtry won the Pulitzer for the book. Aside from awarding the actors individually, most praise would ring hollow after that.
Another good scene in this movie: The initial encounter with Blue Duck, with Gus in his underwear. "Ohhh, I imagine Call will be around presently. You can sit there in the shade and wait for him, if you're able after we git through." :)

I think you're right. Its definatley worth the watch- it is appealing on many levels- a love story, a western, action, adventure.

He wasnt acting- someone left a camera on by accident,in between scenes.
The Pianist - towards the end, when he nearly gets shot by Russians for wearing a Wehrmacht coat.
Didn't like that movie so much (Maybe because I had just seen the movie Uprising (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250798/) before, and finding it was a better movie dealing with a similar subject), and I speculate that the move would have been more satisfying to watch if he had actually gotten shot by the Russians at the end. But that's just me ;)
Good scenes in war-movies:
The opening 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan.
A lot of the scenes in Thin Red Line (Storming of the bunker at the top).
Sgt. Kaffekanne (Gert Fröbe) seeing the allied fleet in The Longest Day.
And I have to mention Band Of Brothers, specifically when the German General gives his speech in the last episode, when Winters is running alone across the field in Crossroads, and during the German shelling of Bastogne. That's the best mini-series I've ever seen, I think...

haha...I love that scene.
best scenes? American Beauty, when Lester gets shot
Miracle, the actual miracle moment, closely followed by the dedication of the movie
In We Were Soldiers...the fighting overlayed with the wife giving out death notices
Requiem For A Dream...the entire "winter" section. Its like a train wreck
I also laugh every time at the "YOU SMUG FUCK! *stab*" part
Fight Club...the ending right when the music kicks in. I love the ironic beauty mixed with that being the first song with words of the movie.

Some good picks in here, some not so good. But since it's all a matter of taste I won't pick on peoples choices, they're theirs. I have some subdued choices, I like small movement in scenes, 'big scenes' are not as likely to get to me (not to say they don't)
"Many are called, few are chosen." The opening introduction to 'Rabbit' in the verite documentariy Salesman, right before we realise we are watching the end of this mans way of life. It is the confidence, the arrogance of being on camera. There is another scene where a character lies to a woman to guilt here into buying a bible she can't afford...gut wrenching, really. Great movie, recomended for all.
"What's the worst thing about growing old?" "Remembering what it was like to be young." That exchange between the main character of The Straight Story and an extreme-sports cocky kid. The best scene in that, though, is at a bar where he runs into another WWII vet and tells the story of shooting his own man on accident. The narrative music fades semlessly into soundtrack, the background loses focus to immulate stars, which are a recuring symbol in the movie. It's not just a well acted scene, but the sound design, the cinematography, the whole package makes it a beautiful scene.
Citizen Kane has two I really like. Kane being dwarfed by his fireplace while he can't get his wife out of the house and him as a child playing in the snow out the window while his parents discuss giving him away.
The 'Hearts' scene in Way of the Gun where Del Toro explains the game of hearts with Phillipe to the kidnap victim to explain the situation they are in. It's really a well done scene, using one thing to say something else.
There are a ton of good scenes in Smoke. "The weight of smoke" in the opening is good, Augie Wren's christmas story is good. Getting Paul a date is a good scene (He's my son, actually. Many people think, because I'm older, that I am the father, but in fact the opposite is true.)
There are a ton of classic good scenes that it would be redundant to call up, like scenes in Cool Hand Luke etc. So I've been trying to avoid those (even though I mentioned the Citizen Kane ones).
That's what I got for now. I'll probably think of a bunch later.

Crash - The scene with the Iraqi guy and the locksmith and his daughter. Thats the only scene that ever made me jump out of my seat and shout "Nooooo!". How embarrassing. I sobbed like a woman for the rest of the film.
LOTR Return Of The King - Gandalfs monologue about death. When he says "white shores" it always gets me. I dont know why.
Last Samurai - That last charge. Just amazing.
Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children - The fight with Behemut. Epic.
Grave_n_idle
28-02-2006, 02:21
Someone already mentioned the first:
Fight Club - The buildings falling as the Pixies kick in. The 'changeover' point. The vertical camera that goes from the top of the building to the van in the basement. The Norton/Pitt fight in the basement. "This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time"; "I want you to hit me as hard as you can".
Dog Soldiers - "I hope I give you the shits, you fucking wimp"
Ensign Pulver...
The one scene where Pulver reveals that he didn't take the marbles out of the captain after operating on him...:D
Rejistania
28-02-2006, 02:33
I don't know whether anyone knows but the only remarkable scene in D.A.R.Y.L. (or what was the title?) Where the android in the form of a young boy is told to check how much money on the account of someone else is, he hacks into it, one can hear the computer voice count random values up until it's at about one Million and he just goes back and says 'enough'.
Saige Dragon
28-02-2006, 03:10
Mad Max - Last scene where Max handcuffs Johnny the Boy to the the rolled car (which is about to explode), gives him a hack saw and utters,"The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It'd take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you're lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go."
Resevoir Dogs - The last scene where Nice Guy Eddie, Joe and Mr. White have all shot each other. Mr. Pink has left and the cops are storming the warehouse. Mr. White is holding Mr. Orange in his arms as Orange admits to being a cop.
Acqua Pacifica

Final scence of lock stock and two smoking barrels. (Involving a gun being thrown over a bridge, and an attempted sell phone call)
The scene in Munich where the girl picks up the phone that has been attached to the bomb.
The scene in Munich where they kill the hitgirl.
Every scene from any Mel Brooks movie.
Dododecapod
28-02-2006, 04:05
The "Passage through the Rings" sequence in Silent Running.
The final fight in Frequency, when father and son are battling the bad guy in two different times, and the effects of one translate to effects in the other...and how that sequence ends!
The section of The Usual Suspects when the detective realises who he's been talking to.

Final Destination 2- Where she pictures the car wreck- that was cool
Gladiator- At the end when he is dying and walking through the wheat field in his mind thus bringing the movie in full circle- one of the few times I have shed a tear for a movies sake
Saving Private Ryan- Tom Hanks is shell shocked at the end and the panzer is rolling towards him
Van Helsing- The fight w/ Van Helsing and Dracula
A Bridge Too Far- When the Americans are crossing the river in boats and the germans destroy them with mortars
Zarathoft

Braveheart---Starting at where thye think he is gonna sya he's had enough or whatever and he yells "Freedom" then all the way to where his friend throws his sword out onto the battlefield.
Count of Monte Cristo---Love the whole movie....
THE LOST PLANET
28-02-2006, 04:44
High Risk (anyone remember that one?) - the escape scene, where the heroes are pinned down at the airfield and in comes "Adios Airline". I love that the pilot pops in a cassette in a stereo in the instument panel and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" sarts blaring just as his brother starts laying down cover with a M60 hanging in the door of that old C-47....

Some of my favourite scenes:
The airlock scene in 2001. The complete absence of sound is awesome.
The space station docking scene in 2001. I can never hear that waltz now without thinking of it.
'Are you lookin' at me?' If you don't know which movie, shame on you!
"I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"
Again, if you don't know the movie, shame shame shame.
The movie that has it's final scenes at an airport and this line:
"If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."
(best line from that movie: "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she had to walk into mine.")
And honestly, if you really don't know which movie I'm talking about, you should be shot.
The 'layla' scene in Goodfellas. The long panning shots with Layla playing. Brilliant direction and cinematography.
Danny cycling thru the Overlook hotel, with the camera right down at floor level. Just feels so creepy. 'The Shining', btw.
Slim Pickins riding the nuke down in 'Dr Strangelove'.
The chariot race scene in 'Ben Hurr'
"I know it was you Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart!"
THE shower scene.
The crop duster scene in 'North by Northwest'.
The scene in 'Bladerunner' where Decker chases and kills the stripper replicant. I just love the way it's filmed in slo-mo and her desperation and will to live - the way she runs thru the glass while Decker is shooting her. A quite subtle way of showing just how desperate the replicants are in their desire to live.
The rape scene in Dogville. Dogville was a film with no sets. It was filmed in a darkened warehouse with lines painted on the floor where the buildings were. The actors treated them as real. So when Nicole Kidman is raped by Stellan Skarsgard in his home we can see it happening, while the townfolk are outside totally oblivious, which you can take as a comment on society's attitude towards rape.
The song-and-dance scene on the railway bridge in 'Dancer in the Dark'. It's so superbly shot and edited. Von Trier used something like 60 cameras and took 100 hours of footage for this 7 minute piece. The editing and cinematography is brilliant.
The Gunnery Sergeant Major scene in 'Full metal jacket'. Funniest scene in any movie ever. 'Best part of you ran down the crack of your momma's ass and ended up as a brown stain on the mattress!'
'Apocalypse Now'. God, where to start? The whole movie is just jam-packed with one great scene after another.
That's enough for now. If I'm bored at work again, I'll post more.

some more of mine--
Lord of War- Where he is standing in the communist arms yard as the hammer and sickle lowers behind him
LOTR Two Towers- Where Haldir dies on the walls of Helms Deep and sees the bodies of the dead all around him; it was pretty moving
The Maltese Falcon- Where all the characters are sitting around at the end discussing how and whom to pin the blame on- film noir at its best
Thin Red Line- where the Americans charge through the open field to get to the Japanese hill and are getting killed
The Last Samuri- The charge at the end was amazing
Braveheart- The torture scene atthe end is pretty sad
A Bridge Too Far- The scene at the end where all the injured Americans are sitting on a hillside near a ruined mansion; and a soldier takes out his flute and starts playing and the men begin to softly sing as the German infantry division is seen marching towards them in the background

A Bridge Too Far has many great scenes, an amazingly well done movie.
Equilibrium at the end.
Das Boot, during the depth charge attacks.
The Big Red One Reconstruction, french horsemen charging into the town.
Vertigo, end scene.
Paths of Glory, end scene.
Plus others that have been mentioned.

I thought Contact was a pretty decent movie.
Anyway, Pleasantville had some nice scenes. The trial at the end where Toby Maguire makes William H Macy and the Judge turn "colored", the scene whrer Toby (still in black and white) and his girl (in color) are approached by two highschool jock types who make a comment about his "colored girlfriend" illustrating the ugliness beneath the pleasant image we have of the 50's, and the scene where Don Knotts as the TV repairman/God tries to cast Toby Maguire out of pleasantville come to mind.
I just saw that movie again this morning. I'd forgotten how much I liked it.

Donnie Darko - "Why are you wearing that stupid mansuit?"
That whole scene is excellent.
I also liked Farimir-getting-mangled scene in RotK.

How can we forget the timeless "I will now sell five copies of 'The Three EPs' by the Beta Band"...classic moment.

I took a look through the list and am horrified no one is picking any Leone moments!
Obviously, the top two would be - in second place - the climactic face off on the graveyard between "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly". But number 1 with a bullet is the moment in "Once Upon a Time in The West" when we finally get Harmonica's grudge against Frank revealed in flashback, and realise what an utter, utter, utter bastard Henry Fonda is.
While we are at it, can we add "Withnail driving under the influence whilst Jimi Hendrix plays on the soundtrack" from "Withnail and I"; the moment where the pieces fall into place in "The Usual Suspects" and we realise that the narrator is a liar, and nothing we have seen so far can be trusted in any degree; the moment in "Zulu" when, hideously outnumbered by the Zulu warriors, the Welsh soldiers start a singing battle against them (and indeed, the scene where Micheal Caine loses his rag because the Zulu's after the battle are taunting them, cue Boer "They aren't taunting you <hysterical giggles> they are saluting you"); "I'm Spartacus!" (nuff said, Kubrick's best moment); the steadicam shot into the nightclub following Ray Liotta and his date, right to the front of the stage, in "Goodfellas"; "Let me introduce you to my leedle frieeeend" in "Scarface"; the heartrending and yet heartwarming scene when Anton Waldorf (as Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorf) undergoes the gentlest interrogation ever as a German living in wartime UK in "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" and every single scene ever involving Bruce Campbell in the second and third "Evil Dead" movies...

I certainly think there is a great scene on Con Air where the worst killer Garland Greene escapes from the landing site and goes to see a little girl. It then leaves them singing 'He's got the whole world in his hands' in a creepy tone and you wonder whether or not he will kill her.

Lord of the Rings - Return of the king - Eowyn kills the with king
Huh? Even my sister, who is a right-on feminist, groaned at that and rolled her eyes.
The Omen: When Damien's mom takes him to the zoo and all the animals start goin nuts
Omen II surely [/movie geek] :p
Modern Times - When the Tramp is walking along the street and picks up a red flag that has fallen off a truck and tries to get the attention of the driver by waving for it only for a march to appear behind him.
My description does no justice, but it made me burst out laughing.

Horror movies. Love 'em.
Evil Dead - The last scene with the low to the ground camera angle that zooms through the woods, through the house, and then right down Bruce Campbell's screaming throat. Classic.
The Shining - Jack Torrance talking to the non-existant bartender in the deserted (?) Overlook Hotel (...your money's no good here, Mr. Torrance.), followed by his talk with Delbert Grady in the bathroom (And when my wife tried to prevent me from doing my duty, I corrected her.)
Night Of The Living Dead (the original) - The last scene where the black guy emerges from the cellar to meet his doom at the hands of a bunch of ignorant rednecks with shotguns who mistake him for just another shambling corpse.... AND..... the scene where the undead daughter comes to unlife and then does mommy with a garden trowel. Both most disquieting.
Psycho - Take a guess. Yep. The shower scene. Never was so much done in one scene with so little. Hitchcock was a genius.
That'll do for starters. I have more.

1. Apocalyse Now: the scene involving the boat with the Vietnamese family. Tragic, nasty, and evil, yet so wonderfully, deliciously so.
2. The Godfather: The final scene with Michael, his sister, and his wife.
3. Schindler's list: Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.
4.The Sixth Sense: Malcolm and his wife at the end.

Conspiracy is great too, especially when Heydrich says "Dead men don't hump, dead women don't get pregnant. Death is the best form of sterilization." or "Do they even have a hell? They do now. We provide it."
