Good horror flick

I need someone to help me find a good one. Only problem is, I'm picky picky. If its mainstream I've probably seen it and chances are I think its crap. I havn't been freaked out by a movie in a long time.
Some examples: The Omen - the last movie that really freaked me out (I prefer my mind to be flipping than being scared by a loud noise after a quiet part of the movie)
28 Days Later: thought it was decent, but not in what I would call a "horror" category... more action (just because it has zombie's doesn't make it horror- *smiles and thinks about Shawn of the Dead*
Saw: total crap... shitty acting, etc
So I guess I am looking for a movie that will mess with my head and with good acting (something that makes you get into the movie)...
Anybody know any good non-hollywood crap horror movies?

Horror as in Blood and guts...
Or Horror as in Scary.
for scary, try "The Changeling" with good speakers and a dark room.
I cant remember it well but there is Dog Soldiers.

The Serpent and The Rainbow.
The last truly scary movie I've seen.
Horror as in Blood and guts....
Blood 'n' guts isn't horror. Well done, it's black comedy.
The Blair Witch...
The true horror will come when you realized you spent good money to rent that drek. :D

gotta ask. after all, Slasher flicks are catagorized loosely as horror.

I'm not usually grossed out by blood and guts, so I'm looking for something that'll make me want to check the closet, the trunk of the car, etc after watching the movie... something that'll make me sleep with a light on...

The Audition
The Wishing Stairs
A Tale of Two Sisters
One Missed Call
Infection
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (more of a thriller, I guess)
Phone
Suicide Club (54 schoolgirls die in the opening, for you gore-mongers)
There's more, but I can't think of 'em off the top of my head.

Try "The Devil's Backbone". It's a ghost/mystery story, not straight horror, but it's pretty creepy in places.
I cant remember it well but there is Dog Soldiers.
Jupp, but that's a fun movie. Hilarious :p
Dunno if I have any good advice. Event Horizon was kind of creepy. Uhm... I'm guessing you've seen Alien and Aliens... And The Thing...
No, anybody has a good suggestion?

I love Dog Soldiers. I'm a huge fan of werewolf movies and this is one of the best to come out in recent years. Absolutely brilliant.
anyone seen Cabin Fever? how was that?
Pulse looks absolutely incredible, I'm definately seeing it when it comes out.
Signs: really cool type of horror.
Ghost Ship: luckily the best scene is early on so you can turn it off after that.
My mind just went blank ugh
if you don't mind anime... try Perfect Blue for a twisted suspense.

Like most horror^w movies produced now days. A little directionless, and too enamored with the cleverness of its concept to follow through and excecute it. There are a couple of amusing parts, but meh.

Current, fairly bloodless, thriller: The Ring "Like ohmigod, look at his face!"
blood and guts: Friday the 13th (any of them... i like The Final Chapter, but start with the first one). Killkillkillkill.... Jasonjasonjasonjason.

28 Days Later is not zombies. Zombies are the walking dead. The people in that movie were infected with a rage disease. So there. :p
Anyway, check out They (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0283632/).
Decently creepy, some good nail biting moments, and one or two little "jumps".

I don't like slasher horror either, but not all hollywood is crap - You've probably seen 'em, but:
The Exorcist
Rosemary's Baby
The 6th Sense
Devil's Advocate
Psycho
Exorcist III
The Fly (original version w/ Vincent Price)
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
The Mad Room
Who Slew Auntie Roo?
Are all Horror movies worth seeing IMHO as they play on inate psychological fears instead of the "gross out" factor (Admittedly the Exorcist has some gross out in it though).

Second that. Was really surprised by it, only picked it up as a 3rd choice for the night. By the time I watched it it was night and we had a full moon.
American Werewolf. Still one of the best transformation scenes ever made (with CCR playing in the background: priceless!).

Maybe both?
And yes, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead (also the remake) and Day of the Dead are good as well. I thought that Land of the Dead lacked some of the "real" zombie feeling.
Good ones are also the Evil Dead I + II, whereas Army of Darkness is just funny!

The Hellraiser movies are good as well....
The Hills have eyes
Good flick, for the budget, and the time.
Watch for the re-make coming soon.
Last house on the left
Not a fantastic film, but a couple of scenes.
Always remember...NEVER force anyone to perform oral sex on you, after you've raped thier daughter.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (not the shitty remake)
The original was far superior...but I know several hardcore fans, and almost all of them like the remake.
Romeros Dead Series
Gospel.
(Except for the last one..that was only "ok")
Others I recommend:
I Spit on your Grave.
In The Mouth of Madness.
House of 1000 Corpses.
The Devil's Rejects.
If you like Lovecraft, "Dagon" has a really good face-peeling scene.
"Cannibal Holocaust" is a classic, with some actual animal slaughter.
Also, I actually wonder if one of the impaled corpses in the jungle isnt real.
Its not a "horror" film per se, but its got some shocking brutality, and the end is poetic justice.
"Burial Ground" is a classic zombie flick.
Anything by Fulci.

The remake is notable mainly because of its strict adherence to the Golden Rule Of Horror Flicks: The tits of the heroine are always in the centre of the screen. But - I admit - it does have some fun scenes, too.

Indeed.
However, it was also the little things that sold me on the re-make.
Like when Leatherface puts the guy on the meathook, and then packs his severed limb in curing salt.
Watching the actor struggle for breath, becuse theres a meathook through his diaphragm, is good watchin'.

Yeah, even the non-horror portions (the interactions between the squaddies) were very well done and an interesting change from the deluge of americano-centric movies of that ilk. The film just wouldn't have worked if it had been a squad/platoon of GIs at the centre.
They could of tightened up the editing a touch though - towards the end of the film things start to get a bit confusing, and I think this was unintentional. I also seem to remember a couple of gaffes concerning the state of the landrover outside the cottage. Still and all, it is a remarkably good film. I came to it with no expectations, and came away very happy.
I seem to recall that they are planning on making a quasi-sequal focusing on the special-forces units, and if I remember correctly the events in it will be happening at the same time as the events of the first. Could be interesting.

Can't believe this thread's got up to 5 pages now, and no-one's mentioned THE best horror movie ever:
The Shining.
Some of those scenes just really creep me out.
Japanese movie, 'Audition' isn't bad. Some really disturbing scenes in that one, I can tell you. A few ppl walked out when I went to see it (not out of boredom but horror/disgust) and a mate who went said one guy went to walk out and actually fainted just as he reached the exit.
Personally I thought it had the potential to be really disturbing and frightening, but it didn't quite do it for me.
But then again, I do have a pretty twisted imagination.

A normal, average guy who lives in New York City becomes dependent on an evil, disembodied brain. The brain feeds the guy a narcotic substance in exchange for his unwilling assistance in obtaining the brains of innocent victims for sustenance. This turns into a tour of circa-1980s underground NYC clubs, backlots, and other seedy locations. One scene features the band Swimming Pool Cues playing the song "Corruption."
How about "The Stuff" ?
The monster...is DESSERT.
havent seen the stuff in a long time, another cheese classic.

Thats a good policy.
It will eliminate Blade, and its sequels.
and Highlander 2,3, and 4.
theyre making a highlander 5
Oh and backwoods, Ferrigno was in hell comes to frogtown 2 not 1 sorry
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106970/
well
1you should be happy that they are remaking the omen
2 there were multiple omens, not quite sure #3 and #4 match up to the first two but they are interesting
3 as a horror fan, i have had the same problem you have. final destination 3 is worth a look, i don't think every one will like it but. i almost screamed at multiple times in the theater.
4 if you like slashers, might want revisit the scream seires, again not sure 3 measures up but... also when a stranger calls is pretty good for a slasher.
5 and finaly instead of movies why not try survival horror video games my personal favorite is fatal frame.1 ans 2 are out on both the ps2 and the x-box
6 all silent hill fans rejoyce! silent hill is becoming a movie! alot of fans may point out that most video game movie suck but i've seen a trailor and this one at least looks amazing

Okay, havent seen it, but I now know wich one your talking about.
Im gonna make a point of finding it if I can.
Sounds like my kinda film.
If you like bad movies with horrible bands, I recommend "Night Train to Terror", and "Hard-Rock Zombies".
Both wonderfully terrible.

if you love wonderfully terrible you get to get Tromas collection of films including
terror firmer, the toxic avenger (and its 4 sequels), bloodsucking freaks, redneck zombies, the killer condom, the list goes on and on.

The People Under The Stairs is entertaining enough, but I wouldn't really classify it as a horror movie. Unless I'm forgetting some particularly out-of-place scene, I wouldn't have any qualms about letting a 10 year old watch it.I've never seen it, but I recommended it on the recommendation of my sister. I think she's said it's her favorite horror movie, and she likes horror movies.
redneck zombiesI haven't seen any of the others in your list, but this one was so bad it was good.

Horror as in Blood and guts...
Or Horror as in Scary.

I love Troma.
I havent seen any of the Toxie sequels, but I have seen Bloodsucking Freaks, The Killer Condom, and especially Redneck Zombies.
"Oh bitch, without ya, my lifes doo-doo. Im a broke-dick redneck zombie, without you."
Anyone know wich Troma film was the one where some first grade class, (maybe a scout troope) gets wasted?
I remember one kid getting a pitchfork to the neck. Looked frickin sweet.
Must know the name of that film.
Not really "horror", but I highly recommend the Japanese film Battle Royale.
Hows,
The Hills Have Eyes sound?
Looks like a good movie... Mutated people kill unsuspecting tourists. Who could ask for more?

I like horror films that have atmosphere and intelligence and psychological mastery that make your mind think, rather than gorefests that have never given me the frights or jolted me.
Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday 13th, never did anything for me, and I found them laughable and cheesy.
Here's my reccomendations:
Candyman
Candyman 2
The Wicker Man
The Shining
Event Horizon
The Ring
The Cell: Forget J-Lo was in it, this film is good. Travelling around in a serial killer's head.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Original. The last unrelenting 15 minutes is brilliant, unblinking film making of trauma.
Blair Witch Project: It was psychologically suggestive, in that it left alot to imagination. Blood and Guts don't move me.
The Last Broadcast: (I think that's what it's called): Said to have inspired BWP, this mock documentary follows a team investigating The Jersey Devil. Brilliant character build up and tension. Has a brutal, uncompromising ending.
Man Bites Dog: It's a Belgian mock documentary about a camera crew who follow and film a serial killer as he goes about his 'work', and they interview him in between his kills, building up a relationship. The scene with the child is chilling but filmed as if it's just a normal procedure. Which raises the question throughout about how involved with the killer the camera crew have become.

Let's hope its not as a big disappointment as teh resident evil movies.
and speaking of video game movies I hear they are making a Fatal Frame movie, one of the best survivial horror games ever. Let's hope Uwe Boll keeps his blasphemous hands off the movie.
