You can't be both, you have to either love it or hate it!

I think it's the most disgusting thing ever invented. Whoever decided that putting tar onto toast was a tasty way to start the day clearly had something wrong in the head.

I like it.

Notice to anybody who is going to try marmite: you have to spread it very thinly. If you put too much on when you aren't used to it, you won't like it.

HATE!

Seriously don't know how anyone can like it. Marmite is a British (I think) spread...thing. i'm not sure what it's made out of, but it's vile.

They then had an ad campaign about a year ago with the catch phrase 'you eaither love it or hate it' and it increased their sales by 50%.

Ewwwww, Marmite is seriously the worst thing ever invented, and DrunkenDrove, just imagine spreading motor oil mixed with alcoholic sweat on toast and eating it, you get the same effect!

good advice a nice thin layer is perfect for toast

in case you haven’t noticed I like marmite though only on toast (oh and marmite is yeast extract and so it ferments in your stomach which can make you drunk if you have had enough)

Don't you need live yeast for fermentation?

Never had any. And after reading this thread, I most likely never will!

I love Marmite... first encountered it in London about 20 years ago, where I thought "what is this goo?" and then I tried a little bit.

It has a taste like a very strong salty beef broth, which is why you only use a little bit. Spread on buttered toast it is very good.

Harder to find here, but in NY more places are carrying it now.

Ignore them. Try it. But try it thinly! It's not like most toast/sandwich spreads , it requires thin spreading.

I would suggest spreading it so thinly that you can't actually taste it as being the only way to enjoy anything with Marmite.

What, the test of whether something is good to eat or not is whether having it makes you a 'brave person?'

I prefer to judge things on how they taste, and the fact is that Marmite is the most disgusting product ever dreamed up.

Nope. Clearly, you consider marmite strong - I doubt anyone would call a weak flavour "the most disgusting ever". Either you put too much on when you tried it, or you have an oversensitive sense of taste.

You can put as little on as you like, it remains revolting. I don't understand how anyone can even get past the smell of the stuff, let alone eat it.

If it helps you to understand, you may want to consider the subjectivity of taste. As with other food, drink, entertainment and many other things, different people enjoy different things. No-one is "right" or "wrong" about what is good or bad here, they simply have different opinions.

I had to look it up to see what exactly it was:

and I can say now that it looks and sounds vile.

What a bizarre site...it is pretty much suggesting that everyone in Britain eats it as part of their staple diet. "Most adults never grow out of it" is completely untrue; as I'm sure you can see from this thread it is most definately a taste that divides opinion - you really do either love it or hate it!
