Giving up something for Lent?

I've decided to give up the Internet this year. I'll be checking my email, but that's it. So I'll be gone for a while, starting Wednesday. :(

Anybody else going cold turkey on something beloved for 40 days?

only a few days left to decide eh...

maybe i'll give up cussing again... that was a hard one...

I don't drink often enough to make that it...

I don't smoke...

ooo... i could give up video games... but that would make for a very boring 40 days...

yeah its probably cussing...

yeah it took almost the entire 40 days to actually get control of the way I spoke... I definitely cussed less afterwards, but it still slips in more often than appropriate

Probably candy/chocolate. That's what I do just about every year. A few years ago I tried to give up coffee and tea. That failed miserably, and I'm not going to try that again anytime soon...

by giving up Lent for Lent you are participating in Lent, so if you're aim is to take a clever stab at it, then you fail miserably.

Ouch! No Jelly Bellys???

I quit coffee for my New Year's Resolution a few years ago when my doctor told me to quit drinking it. That was rough. I still have about one cup a week, mostly when I smell it and can't stand the temptation. Much less than the 3 cups a day I was drinking before.

Nope, no Jelly Bellys. It should be interesting, considering the fact that all my co-workers have candy dishes on their desks, and one of them is always filled with Jelly Belly sours. :( One of my supervisors actually gives up all sweets starting in January, kind of an extended Lent. She says it's to clear out all the crap in her body from the holidays.

I have a cup or two per day when I'm at work. Sometimes on the weekends I have a cup in the morning, but usually I try to stick to tea.

I usually give up coffee and Coke and eat out at restaurants for Lent. In addition, I wont smoke any cigars (which isnt that big a deal as there isnt much chance to in the cold) and no alcohol.
I also try to improve everything else I do. I make a conscious effort to be more patient and tolerant and I try to do more good. I step up my efforts at work, and more attention to the family.

I usually do alright in all these areas.

I would do, however, self-restraint of this manner is anathemic to the purpose of my life, whilst it is a fallacy. Why would one want to expend 40 days of one's life in self-restraint in gratitude to a deity whose very existence is dubious, and to an execution the permutations of which you frankly cannot discern?

Maybe I'll give up speaking to my annoying Catholic aunt. Yeah, I've humoured her long enough.

I give up jesus for lent each year, and harass my christian friends about doing the same.

If their faith isnt strong enough to give jesus up for a month and then take him back, or if he doesnt love them enough, its all bunk.

I'd like to give up grading for Lent, but I doubt my boss or my students would appreciate that very much.

Fair enough. Normally I don't observe Lent so this year I'm going to give up giving up Lent. ;)

It's just a circular argument that's meant to make people go "haha" and then move on. m'kay?
