The real question is: can we build stuff on them? Or are they moons that are only big enough to build a small outhouse on?

Now Luna, Phobos and Deimos, THOSE are moons.

A similar statement can be made about pluto. Fact of the matter is that the term "planet" is not really defined.

- Roughly spherical object

- Over a specific size in volume

- Orbiting a sun

- Reasonably cosistant mass (not just a cloud of dust)

The asteroid belt contains several objects that meet these qualifications just as well as pluto does ;)

Fair enough, I didn't read the article. But can we build things on them? Could they sustain life with various human enhancements, or would we just freeze to death.

Should be from Greek mythology... I vote for "Styx" (the river that must be crossed to enter the underworld) and "Zerberus" (the two-headed beast guarding the entry of the underworld).

Very fitting. Both these moons and Chuck Norris are things that nerds obsess over, are really irrelevant to life on Earth, and are of absolutely no interest to anyone who has ever dated anyone other then their right hand. Very clever.

How about renaming Charon to "Curly?" Then we could name the two new moons "Larry" and "Mo!" :D

Or make the three "Crosby, Stills, and Nash!" That would make any additional new moon "Young." Kewl! :D

It's bigger than Pluto, and if Pluto is a planet then this one should be too. I think Senda was another KBO discovered a couple of years ago. The new one doesn't have an official name yet.

Yes, Sedna (named for an Inuit goddess) is a different object. Sedna is smaller than Pluto, the 10th planet (still designated 2003 UB313) is larger.

Well Pluto is roman for the Greek Hades. And Charon was an acompanniement of Hades so maybe we should name it after two other of his accomplices.

Thanatos} Helper
Hypnos} Helper

Cerebrus} Three headed dog.

I'd go for Thanatos and Hypnos.

Hey, that's odd...
We have a school assignment to make a new planet and it's moon (as well as it's star) and compare it to Earth, and we picked Morpheus for the planet and Thanatos for the moon.

Some article put me under the impression that there might even be an eleventh planet, beginning with a Q.

Quaoar. It's also smaller than Pluto, although pretty big. Astronomers are trying to decide if all of these new planet-like bodies should be planets because there could be potentially dozens or hundreds of them, many larger than Pluto. The dilemma is also whether Pluto should be a planet or not.

A similar statement can be made about pluto. Fact of the matter is that the term "planet" is not really defined.

Maybe we should go back to the root of the word?

Origin: "asteres planetai"... 'wandering stars'... so called because of the way plants seemed to 'double back' on themselves through the course of full relative orbits.

Then it would be quite simple... if a body follows a 'planetary' path, it's a planet... if not, it isn't.
