Free music

Do you know good sites for free music? I am currently so annoyed with the music industry that I do not think I will consume their products soonish. I like music but the whole giving the copyright to a company thing is something I really detest. I think artists should remain owners of the music they wrote. I think the music industry is playing a game of on the one hand making many (lets call it politely: ) short-term-profit music and on the other hand tries everything to fight this devaluation of music legally. They influence national legislations to pass laws, which I do no longer consider moral (this whole 'no longer being able to do whatever you want with a medium you bought'-thing).

If you want to discuss this topic here, feel free as well, at least it's a pleasent change from the religious threads here.

PS: I mean legally free music.

I'm guessing public domain music (ie, classical) should be pretty easy to get a hold of for free somewhere. Worth a google, perhaps?

*Shrug*

Since the topic is made, does anyone know where I can get a hold of a collection of Edvard Grieg's Lyric Pieces? I tried buying it off eclassical.com but talk about false advertising! It had about 3 of the tracks of 60 it should have.

Oh, so limewire and those of the like don't count? You could always go to something like the Windows Media Player radio and just record songs as they play. Quality's not the best, but it's free and no one knows you're copying it. :D

I do not want to consume products of an industry, which in my opinion violates unwritten rules of morals and decency, not save money.

So why don't you use illegal free music sites and salve your conscience by giving the equivalent cash to charity? You'd be like Robin Hood, but with better music.

You did hear about these lawsuits? And you did hear how much the music industry uses the argument of illegal filesharing to reduce customers rights? I would directly run into their argument and indirectly support them.

Give me the names of some legal artists to leech from there.

Pandora (http://www.pandora.com), listen to free music. Put in the name of a band or song that you like and it'll play music similar to it for you. The only catch is you can only skip so many songs per hour. Not sure how many. Has something to do with the license agreement. And to sign up you need a US ZIP code.

This would still promote the arguments of the music industry... and I do not want to become instrumentalized by these greedy [expletive deleted]s

This site has at least some free music.

I do not know what they have except for the page linked to, but that is a whole album with full tracks, free (as beer) and legal.

another thought, not free, but to support music drectly and bypass the industry entirely, is to go to music festivals. especialy jam band festivals where the musicians often have tables where they sell their own cd's and dvd's directly to the public without corprate middledroids.

it's still buissiness of buissiness but it's more 'mom and pop' then corporacratic. gives our bennifactors a living, like farmers markets ant flea markets, and bypassess the whole overcentralization and circular illogic of 'gobish'ness.

another thing, i've been doing, check with individual musician's and groups web sites. some of them, not all or even a majority, but some, (many if not most, are just as disenchanted with 'the industry' as you are) have samples and freebees to download.

my entire collection, which isn't a lot yet, but growing, is entirely from that way.

I believe file sharing in general is illegal in many countries, others (such as Canada) it is a gray area. It is not illegal, but it is not promoted in anyway.

Not necessarily. Let's say I DL Accelerando texts from it. Accelerando is legally leechable for non-commercial use. Or I DL the newest Jenkenpopp Album (even though I would need to be weird to do so) or a Linux Distro. It is illegal to DL material, which's license forbids further distribution.

I have a friend who has a website called www.funkysoulfulsounds.co.uk
He's got mixes by top UK and American dj's such as Masters At Work, Dimitri From Paris, Michael Ingils etc. He just asks them if he can post them on his website, they say yeah and you can download them.

Join bands' website messageboards and ask others to put up links to somewhere you can download the band's music from. Once the link is up, leave it for a little bit (say a day). If it's still up there after that long, chances are someone from the band will at least know about it but hasn't been bothered enough to take it down.

Yeah, it probably won't stand up in court if you're having your ass sued by the RIAA or whatever the British equivalent is (BPI?), but I think it's a good argument.
