Because the United States does not have an official language. The school system is anticipating the growth of speakers of this language, so they are helping YOU out by giving you the opertunity to learn it.
Its not like they force you to anyways, you can pick another language.

If the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Honderuns, Bolivians, etc. are coming here, Why do we have to learn Spanish in schools. That infuriates me! The MExicans come here because it is so great, and then complain when they get here! No one told you to come, you came by yourself. We don't want you here, and if you don't like it here, go back home. It is completely racist to teach Spanish in public schools. Every other culture that has come here, Germans, Italians, Greeks, etc. We have never adopted their language as our second language! I would like to keep it that way! Just because you have to learn English doesn't mean we have to learn Spanish. How many times have u gone to McDonalds or Burger King and not understood a word the cashier says? Learn some d@mn english!
I can sympathize with you that the immigrants who come to the US should learn English, but since when has Spanish been a mandatory class? Most high school teach Spanish, French, German, Latin, and a couple of other languages to boot.

No they don't. I don't know about America but the UK loses huge ammounts of money each year because we don't have enough foreign language speakers, so we lose out on business.
Stick your head in the sand if you want to but it has never been more useful to learn a foreign language.

Thats probally a lack of intrest in other languages, and in that case it is your school boards fault, and most certainly NOT the mexicans fault.

Even if it were true that public schools only teach Spanish (which is an absolute lie), what the hell would the Mexicans have to do with it? Bitch about the Department of Education, not the immigrants.

Wow you are so bigoted it's not even funny. Maybe we learn Spanish more and not German, Italian, French because we share a border with them? Not to mention German, French, and many other foreign languages are offered in school.

Nice one Ignoramus
Heres the statistics for the top languages:
The following list is from Dr. Bernard Comrie’s article for the Encarta Encyclopedia (1998):
(number of native speakers in parentheses)
1. Mandarin Chinese (836 million)
2. Hindi (333 million)
3. Spanish (332 million)
4. English (322 million)
5. Bengali (189 million)
6. Arabic (186 million)
7. Russian (170 million)
8. Portuguese (170 million)
9. Japanese (125 million)
10. German (98 million)
11. French (72 million)
The most spoken language is Mandarin, and English is far from being spoken by everyone. Notice how English is 4th. Mroe people speak spanish than english
I wish I could've taken Spanish in high school...

Isn't it funny, then, that more people speak Chinese than English?
If we're going by whatever language the most people speak, English is a stupid choice.
EDIT: And apparently more people speak Spanish than English too!

We are English de facto at a federal language, otherwise we do not have an official language.

And you mustn't forget that every country south of the U.S. (except Brazil) speaks Spanish.

I know, I saw it. But it must be for first-language speakers. I would assume that English beats ass as a language "spoken" (not "of birth").
But I may be wrong altogether.

French Guyana too.
French Guyana too.
And Guyana, Suriname, the Falklands.
That's if we're talking continental ones. Cause then you have the Anglophone Caribbean, Haiti etc. Continental should also include the Anglophone Meskito Coast.

No one on this planet should be anything less than fluent in at least two languages. Our educational policy should reflect that.
