She tends to be annoying but I like a couple of her songs. I went to (Greater) Napanee, which is Avril's hometown, when she really broke out into superstardom and the populace was so proud of her. Recently when I went to Napanee, a lot of people really, really don't like her.

Avril Lavigne is a brilliant example of a member of one of the 'shallow countercultures'. She seems to know there's something deeper (judging by I'm With You), but rather than bother seeking it she finds comfort in keeping company with superficial rebels.

Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville is a truly raw, open wound of an album that makes Jagged Little Pill sound like the stuff Alanis released before getting jilted by Dave Coulier. Which of these modern pop-tartlets would have the balls to write a song like "Flower": "I just want your fresh young jummy / ramminig, jamming, slamming in me." I miss the old Liz.

As for "Avril", aside form having a pretentious French-version name (and nobody I've ever met or heard of named "April" has ever been even a decent artist) and a dress code out of 80s John Hughes films...for the guys...I think she's relatively harmless. Far more harmful are the Ashlee Simpsons and her ilk. Avril's music may be an attempt at making sugar-coating "edgy" by adding the "herion chic" look to the videos and including skate punks for some sort of X-games street cred, but at least is isn't bubblegum. I mean, are we supposed to believe that Ashlee is the "hardcore" Simpson? Jumpin' Jesus on a Motherfucking Pogo Stick, she sucks.

She’s a producer project, not a real talent like her boyfriend in Sum41. When I found out she lied about writing her own songs I lost a lot of respect for her. Her part in writing songs is to nod her head about songs a producer-hired group of writers submit for her approval. She’s just an illusion created by a record label like most of them are. I like a few of the songs, but I have to say she’s way over marketed for her talent. But that’s nothing new. Just ask Britney Spears about that. Personally I think the five labels that do their best to control and destroy what talent is out there need to be purged from the face of the planet. Then maybe we’d get less Hillary Duff and producer bands.

Exactly. I agree on all points except the last... I could live the rest of my life without ever seeing Britney or Avril porn.

Liz Phair: "Fuck and Run" compared to "Extraordinary"... indeed, how the might have fallen. And that's the difference between 'new' Liz Phair, and Avril Lavigne.... Liz Phair has that back-catalogue to fall... well, back... on.

Avril's "Naked" was a song that I genuinely like & would admit to such in public. Overall I think that her first album was fun enough.

I also remember seeing her on Rove(twerp:mp5: )'Live' & was impressed with the interview, as she just seemed so uncomfortable with the spotlight.

I think she blew it with the second album though, with taking the whole angsty bit too far.

If only she had of stuck with the spirit of the first album...........
