It depends on what you are looking for, in terms of performance, games, style, etc. Each consol has strengths and weaknesses.

To be honest, though, I am quite fond of my little PS2. I got one of the newer ones that's like the size of a note pad. I still remember the first time that my buds and I fired up Grand Tourismo on the PS2...we stared at the menu for like 10 minutes before we figured out that it wasn't a cut scene, it was the actual game.

This poll is a bit weirded... It's got 2 7th gen consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3, the latter of which isn't even out yet) but not their corresponding 6th gen versions (the Xbox and PS2), and it has Nintendo's latest handheld console but doesn't mention their 6th or 7th gen home consoles at all, the Gamecube and the Revolution. If it was more complete, my answer would be:

none, I'm a PC gamer :p

Heh, I just stick with my computer nowadays. Nothing i've played on any of the latest consoles has really entertained me...I have an Xbox, but it's not that special. The only game I really liked on it was Knights of the Old Republic, and that's on PC as well.

I'm a ninty fan all round...

so i'm offended you haven't mentioned the

Gameboy Classic
Gamecube
and
The Revolution.

Also:

Lets not forget The Sega GameGear - Brilliant Screen, but could drain an entire power station.

or The Sega Dreamcast - Online Gaming.

Nintendo and Sega are the true innovators, and they deserve the "best console" titles - even if they haven't got the attention of the masses.

*cannot wait till may 2006*

PS: Not REALLY offended... just think it's a bit... lacking.

But out of those above... the DS wins hands down, simply for its originality.

PC all the time, simply for its vesatility and the fact that you can avoid being comletely screwed by one company (halo 2 on the Xbox only) and the fact that you cant play rts or strategy games on consoles. Ive still got an origional transparent gameboy though!

I'm a PC snob. All the current consoles suck, basically. I can emulate all the good (pre-PSX) consoles on my PC, so there's no problems there.

I voted DS, however, because handhelds do perform a function that a PC cannot (even laptops are a bit cumbersome for real portable gameplay.)

But the poll was asking what console is the best. The PC isn't a console. It's a PC.

Now, i'm a PC gamer at heart, but the SNES was still the best console.

I think not. :p

Around 1993, the PC became undisputed master. Before that, it's a little hazy.

The PC trumps all in one category: adaptability. PC games can take advantage of technology sooner than consoles. PCs can be upgraded, unlike consoles.
(case in point -> a socom ad for ps2 looks 3 years old for a pc game. bleh!)
Consoles have the universal aspect: you needn't worry about compatibility issues. Just pop it in and play.

Oh, and PC has strategy games. I once saw c&c on a ps2 - game from early 90s, btw, worst use of strategy i have ever seen.

I would never have believed it when the PS2 and X-Box were being released, but I honestly believe X-Box is a much better console than PS2.

I dont know anyone with a non-functioning X-Box, several of my friends are on their second PS2, and my own PS2 is stuffed (for no apparent reason).

Sony definately let themselves down. I have a friend that purchased and X-Box and a PS2 at the same time, the PS2 has been fixed several times and is currently not going, their X-Box has never had a problem. I have my old PlayStation, have moved house with it a couple of times, spilt various liquids on it, once even tipped a pot plant (no not that kind) on it by accident, and it still goes - never had a problem. Meanwhile my PS2 which I have used less often, have never spilt anything on, and which hasnt left my lounge since I got it is stuffed. What on earth I am now supposed to do with a couple of thousand dollars worth of PS2 accessories now, I have no clue but I'm sure as heck not sinking any more money into my dead-dog PS2.

Evidently when I first purchassed my PS2, I had to return 2 machines before I got one that functioned properly. A recent phone call with my local PlayStation head office had the person on the other end of the phone claiming that Sony had no knowledge of PS2's being unrealiable, which leaves me wondering how they missed the class action law suit they settled out of court....

The big mistake Microsoft have made is not learning from Sony's earlier lesson. While Sega and Nintendo brought out consoles every second week, PlayStation was around for years and years. I personally chose PlayStation because of its longevity, but here we are with PS3 and X-Box Revolution coming out already....back to revolving consoles because what we really need right now is more non-recyclable electronics filling our land-tips!

completely non-functioning, yes. my friend bought a slimmer ps2 because his other one died and now the thin one died.

i have had an xbox since the second month they were out. the same xbox now only has one problem: the disc drive is a little botched. it gives dirty/damaged errors sometimes, but if you reinsert the disc it works. that's the only problem i ever had. plus the disc drive is easily replaceable. i'm just waiting for the 360.

i'm an ebox man meself, and i think that's utter bullsh*t. microsoft loses $200-$300 on each xbox. they'd have to charge that much to break even. that could be what you are referring to.

i wish it was $900, that way no one would have to buy those ridiculous controllers!

Playing devil's advocate here...to a point. Generally the upgrades are only useful within a certain timeframe which, at the absolute maximum, is about the same as the lives of most consoles. For example, I don't expect to be able to upgrade my Athlon 64 system to a Dual Core one without replacing *everything* in the box, and even then, the box itself would probably need to be switched anyway. Might as well keep this one and buy a new one instead of upgrading. Sure, I could upgrade the sound card, video, RAM, etc. to the latest standard for maximum gaming performance but the relatively slight performance increase won't justify the cost (which will be equivalent to most consoles...well...not so much anymore, but i digress). And too bad if you want a new video card, but have an AGP motherboard...

Oh, and PC has strategy games. I once saw c&c on a ps2 - game from early 90s, btw, worst use of strategy i have ever seen.

On the other hand, that could be a positive influence in that it forces developers to perfect their product before releasing it. Anyone remember when games didn't require downloading a patch as soon as you install your new game? I sure do. Nowadays, some patches are over 100mb...a real pain in the arse at the best of times. (Mind you, this is okay if they add gameplay enhancements, like the IL-2 Sturmovik patches which added a bunch of new flyable aircraft free of charge - I was more than happy to download those. But massive bugfixes are unnacceptable, and very frustrating even with a broadband connection.)

Terrible poll options...I'd first like the say PCs are not really consoles, they are Personal Computers. Be that, they still are much more versatile than a console, have a much greater variety of games and generally can do/become anything the owner wants (gaming rig/stock PC/work machine/etc...)

But as for the best console on the market? XBox 360 is a nobrainer. Currently it is the only next-gen console for sale. The ONLY one. Therefore we can assume it is the best because it is the only console with its capabilities in the world as of now.

As for my favorite? The XBox, just because that is what we have sitting in our basement. I'll admit though that before my brother bought it (yea, didn't pay a single dime;) ) I thought I was a devout PS2 fan. All my friends had them and raved about SOCOM 2 online and such. I still am in awe of GT4 though. Just the quality of workmanship Polyphony put into the game is amazing.

Overall, I would say the SNES. Then, the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis (model 1). Following that, the Dreamcast. From there it slides increasingly downwards. First comes the Sega Master System (the Japanese ones, with the awesome additional YM-2413 chip), then, a bit further down, the NES, and then... further downwards, the PS. even further downwards, the PS2 and Gamecube. Then, eventually, the Nintendo 64.

(note that even earlier consoles aren't included, as I have too little experience of them and their games; their positions are currently undefined)

YES! I love the 64. One of my favorite systems.

My list of favorite systems as follows:

1. PS2 N64 (tie)
2. Xbox 360
3. Regular Nitendo SNES (tie)
4. Nitendo DS
5. Sega Dreamcast
6. GBA
7. Gameboy Color
8. Gamboy
9. Xbox

Those are all the systems I can remember at this time.
PSP and PS3 are left out because I've never played them.
