Muslim news people jailed for speaking against radicals.

The article is long, but well worth reading. It seems that Moslem newspaper people in several countries have been jailed for speaking out against radical Islam. Obviously there is no freedom of the press or freedom of speech in Moslem countries.

Excript: "In a direct challenge to the international uproar over cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad, the Jordanian journalist Jihad Momani wrote: "What brings more prejudice against Islam, these caricatures or pictures of a hostage-taker slashing the throat of his victim in front of the cameras, or a suicide bomber who blows himself up during a wedding ceremony?"

In Yemen, an editorial by Muhammad al-Assadi condemned the cartoons but also lamented the way many Muslims reacted. "Muslims had an opportunity to educate the world about the merits of the Prophet Muhammad and the peacefulness of the religion he had come with," Mr. Assadi wrote. He added, "Muslims know how to lose, better than how to use, opportunities." ...snip...

Mr. Momani and Mr. Assadi are among 11 journalists in five countries facing prosecution for printing some of the cartoons. Their cases illustrate another side of this conflict, the intra-Muslim side, in what has typically been defined as a struggle between Islam and the West.

So what do you think? Should these men be in jail, or should they have the right to print and speak?

You know, if the US wanted to we could threaten to deport the diplomatic people from those countries and cut off all aid and diplomatic contacts until the newspaper folks are freed. It would be nice to actually stand up for some of the principles that we claim to embrace.

They have oil. So that won't happen.

Jordan and Yemen? I didn't know that they had significant ammounts of oil. Sucks to be dependent on foreign oil.

iirc, they aren't the biggest producers, but are still part of opec, and baring them could cause more throwback.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the entire middle east has some decent ammount of oil except Israel...Kuwait with the most per square mile

I thought you were referring to all your allies in the Middle East, whose similar actions you regularly turn a blind eye to as long as they keep the oil flowing and play nice. Kind of like Iraq did into the end of the 80s.

Is this even news? Everyone knows that the governments in those countries are hardly liberal. In fact more often they are totalitarian thugocracies.

Do you really expect anyone to say that they should be in jail?

You'd be surprised. We have quite a few wackos here.

Damn you I was going to pull that stunt:D

You know I got mixed feelings on this its nice to see coverage of the people in the muslim world who are standing up to the radicals, however it really sucks that the coverage is of how their goverments are jailing them for said actions.
