Disturbances broke out in O'Connell Street in the city centre, where a unionist rally to remember the victims of republican violence was to start.

Stones and fireworks were thrown after republican demonstrators mounted a counter-march. The loyalist rally was cancelled as a result of the trouble.

Several cars were set on fire and up to 40 people have been arrested.

It is understood a total of 14 people were injured, including six police officers who were taken to hospital for treatment. ...

... and I almost ran into that when coming out of the cinema this afternoon, walking to the busstop. I was still a good distance away from O'Connell Street when I saw what was going on an decided to take the bus from the Southside (Dame Street). Standing there waiting got scary soon enough, as we could hear what was going on on O' Connell Street... and it got closer. Somebody called Dublin Bus who informed him that they were not currently sending any busses into the city center, but that we should walk down to the quays, as they would go from there. Walking down through Temple Bar, I could hear the riots and glass smashing ... too close for my taste. Police cars and police on horses rushing by didn't actually make me feel any more secure. I was glad when I finally got the bus from Merchant's Quay.
At home, I turned on the TV and actually got the story on what was going on......

Ok, on topic. I can understand that a number of people here may easily take offense at a loyalist demonstration in the heart of Dublin. But this?

Be thankful it wasn't worse. I consider it lucky no weapons were used and nobody was killed.

True. And Dubliners are used to burning cars.... just not in the city center, really.
But I am thankful it wasn't worse and nobody was killed.

Indeed, it's a good thing that it stopped where it did. These sorts of things have a way to get out of hand really easily.

The clips on the news certainly looked a bit scary. Would not like to be caught up in that.

It sounded really scary. I'm glad I wasn't caught up in any of it. If I had stayed on Parnell Street or had tried to get through Temple Bar 10 minutes later....
