Cookies VS Chocolate

This is by far the most controversial poll on these forums. Cookies are crunchy but they have more calories. Chocolate is melty and good for you. However you can make any color of cookies you want, chocolate only comes in 3 shades. White Chocolate is not chocolate btw. And muffins are NOT I REPEAT NOT COOKIES! So make your decision. But choose carefully. The fate of the world rests in your hands.

Is there any history of chocolate in Asia? I can't recall ever coming across any Chinese or Vietnamese recipe that calls for chocolate.
No, thus far, the dessert tradition of most Asian countries does not include chocolate, but that is slowly changing. In the past few years, the people of Japan have embraced chocolate in a big way, with their own huge celebration of Valentine's Day. European and American companies are trying to find a way to penetrate the market in China, either through imports or by building plants in China, but the difficulties of doing business over there (so many trade restrictions, bureaucratic entanglements, etc.), combined with the warm climate, have prevented it. Which is all to the good: more chocolate for you and me.

Chocolate is actually quite common in Asia nowadays, even in China. Even though they don't eat it specially for any traditional celebrations, they eat it as snacks simply because it sweet and good and it's western.

God, yes, if I lived in North America I'd definitely have voted cookies, too.

My only chocolate lifeline there (besides Care Packages from back home) was the one supermarket actually stocking Lindt chocolate (fucking expensive but so worth it) and, when money was low, Cadbury's Nuts & Raisins (because the nuts and esp. the raisins managed to overpower the flavour of the actual chocolate).

And don't even get me started on Hershey's. In 14 months, I had exactly two Hershey's Kisses, and that were exactly two too many. Before I caught on, I actually once bought a large Hershey's Almond Chocolate bar. It tasted so bad that I first thought the almonds were spoiled and rancid, because come on, it couldn't possibly be the chocolate itself that tasted so bad, right? I asked my (American) housemate to try it just to see if I was going crazy or if they really had sold me a spoiled product. And he liked it. Couldn't find anything wrong with it. Tasted fine, and what was my problem anyway?
Honestly, Hershey's chocolate tastes like the cheapest kind of chocolate baking glaze that is sold here. *shudder*

Um, maybe I should add a "No offense!" to all North Americans and Hershey fans in particular. :p.

And you really do cookies a lot better than we do. :p

Depends on which kind of cookies you are talking about ;) (Cookies is the codename for weed here)

And yes, I can't agree with you more. North American chocolate tends to be too sweet to the point that it doesn't taste like chocolate anymore; it tastes like pure sugar. I got a couple of boxes of German chocolate this Christmas, and they truly tasted like heaven. After devouring them, I realized i would never be able to eat North American chocolate again, which is kind of sad, since i will probably be stuck in here for the rest of my life...

Anybody want to send me some European chocolate? Even cyber ones would work...

DING DING DING, thank you for playing.

White chocolate is chocolate. It contains cocoa butter, it just doesn't contain cocoa "mass" (gah, don't know the right words in English).

Here's how the ingredients break up (per 100 grams chocolate):

White chocolate:

* 28g cocoa butter
* 26g powdered milk
* 46g sugar

Milk chocolate:

* 12g cocoa mass
* 22g powdered milk
* 48g sugar
* 18g cocoa butter

Dark chocolate

* 48g cocoa mass
* 4g cocoa butter
* 48g sugar

Ok but forget the barbecue - steak is just fine without it. And they can't be just any old cookies, they have to be homemade, and with expensive chocolate chunks, not cheapy yuk chips. I do like Hershey's Special Dark syrup, though. That can go on the chocolate ice cream. And I prefer brownie bits in my ice cream, as well as perhaps fudge and chocolate chips.

As to chocolate, american chocolate chips are not intended for eating. Kisses aren't any better. But there IS decent chocolate to be had - you just have to know where to look. And how to get it cheap. (My dad went, for many years, to a local chocolate factory and bought "seconds" - the imperfect ones - for a fraction of the price. Granted, they were catch as catch can, but they tasted just as good, and were 6 lbs for $10 instead of 6 oz for $10 with a brand name label stuck on them!) Either way, I always enjoy my trips to the UK, and make sure to stop regularly in places to buy good chocolate for myself.
