Why don't most people get Blazing Saddles?

Stone Bridges

This is Mel Brookes BEST FILM EVER! and yet, most PC people today just don't get the humor. They think that it's a racist show because they say the N word a few times. However, these same people are not looking at the big picture when it comes to this film. This film makes fun of EVERYONE! The white people are dumb ingorant rednecks, They poke fun at the Gays, the Irish, the Chinese/Asians, the mexicans, EVERYONE! I love this film and I have it on DVD. Heres an intresting side note. When producing this film Mel Brooke went over the script with Cleavon Little, to see if he found it funny.

Why don't people just realize the sophisticated humor in Blazing Saddles?

My favorite line in this movie:
Taggart: I hired you people to try to get a little track laid, not to jump aroundlike a bunch of Kansas City gays!

The PC people, women, Leftist, basically anyone who just take the black jokes and blow it way out of proportion and forget the fact that this film makes fun of EVERYONE!

I would LOVE to see Hollywood come out with a movie like Blazing Saddles in today's world. This time we can include the arabs!

Sophisticated? A five minute fart joke in the campfire scene? (Don't get me wrong, it makes me laugh.)

1st, it was like 2 minutes. and 2nd, comon if you ever been on a camping trip (I've been on several when I was in scout), and you have beenies and weenies, of course you're going to try to out-fart one another. It's what guys do.

This is what I'm sayin'. I live in a left leaning town. You have to request meat special. The only people who go into chain stores are tourists. Our city council past a referendum against the war in Iraq before it began. Our mayor gave out pot on the steps of city hall to make a point.

And yet, Blazing Saddles is a popular favorite at the midnights, it can be quoted freely in public.

The point is that there are people out there that don't have a sense of humor and need to get some. Also, I just watched this movie 2 times in a row and I just changed my boxers. :p I am in a really good mood right now, despite the fact that I was sick all day with a headache, the throwing up, and the stomach cramps.

Well, last time I watched the commentary on the dvd, I heard Mel Brooks saying that he caught a lot of crap when the film was first released in theaters, even for having Count Basie on screen playing Cleavon Little into Red Rock--somehow that was racist to someone. There are some people who just don't get satire. I think it has little to do with PC however, because there are people all across the political spectrum who get twisted about depictions in films.

Remember when Dogma was released about 6 years ago? Kevin Smith, as a joke, got out there with the protesters and protested his own film. Monty Python got death threats over The Life of Brian. And there must be hundreds of other films I could name if I actually sat down and thought about it. What it really comes down to is that there are some humorless sumbitches out there, and they need to laughed and prodded with sticks as often as possible.

The only friend I know who doesn't get it is my friend wo's sense of humor is basically... really low. I mean, she doesn't get a joke more complicated than the obvious ones in Spongebob. And even then... which is absurdly sad for a college student.

Mel Brookes is not 'sophisticated'. I'm not saying he isn't funny (I don't find him funny, but I do recognise the value of his kind of humour to others), just not sophisticated.

Bordering on slapstick at times.

Brooks' humor is far from sophisticated. It's very clever in places, but mostly it's broad-brush satire, and very good satire at that.

There's a lot of folks around who just don't get satire at all. These people are perfectly content to take everything at face value and will be the first ones to gladly sign up to become pod people once The Matrix takes over. Brooks, in my opinion, hasn't made an all-around hilarious film since History of the World, Part One -- and even that one has it's lengthy weak spots.

The inability of those you know to laugh at something you think is a riot doesn't make them stupid or humorless. We're all tuned to different vibrations, and that includes the ones that tickle our funny bones. Try worrying about why they don't understand, say, freedom of speech or other things far more important than whether they laugh at Gene Wilder and Cleavon Little.

Just a thought.

I think a very small, very loud, and very annoying minority don't get the humor and don't realize that the racism in the movie is meant as a comment on the absurdity of such views. They complain, and ruin it for the rest of us.

Do you like it just because it makes fun of minorities? You've misread what I said. It's not racist for the sake of being racist, and that isn't where the humor of Blazing Saddles lies. Mel Brooks was trying to say that racism is pointless and stupid, and the way he showed this was by spoofing the common stereotypes and racist views that people tend to have.

The minority I was referring to was that small group of ultra-PC individuals who are offended by almost everything. The sort of people who were bothered by Dogma, or complain about South Park. Most people either have a thick skin about these sort of things and/or can see the underlying message behind such racy humor, and don't make a big deal about it.

This was the same thing that had me so puzzled when the South Park movie came out. "This movies is racist," people cried. It completly baffled me, because while there was racism in it, the jokes were at the expense of the racists. You can't depict racists without showing some racism. Was Mississippi burning racist? How about Malcolm X? Was it a movie promoting the murder of prominent black men?

Seriously. People are just stupid.
