What is the best strategy game that is set on Earth?
I know I said RTS, but i meant strategy.

Civilization isn't an RTS, it's turned based.

Choosing from the other's, I'd say AoE 2 is probably the best although I found Rise of Nations to also be an excellent game. It depends on what type of game I want technologically speaking; if I want modern, I go with RoN and if I want ancient/medieval I go with AoEROR/AoE2:The Conquerers.

I know it's kinda retro, but have a serious soft spot for "Pirates". I can still spend half the day on it, easily.

Civ is turn based but it is still the best.

I loved that game on my Amiga...*remembers playing*....:)

It depends which C&C games you are including. Are you including EA's games like RA2?

I still never get bored of AOE II

and I don't think i ever will.

Civilization is a very close second though, I've only played the first one though.

As an AOE II lover, have you found it hard to get into AOE III? I have.

I only tried the demo of AOE III so I can't make a fair statement about that, it was a little different though. I definitely preferred AOE II over Age of Mythology though, I really didn't like that game, and I thought I really would.

It´s a tie between AoE II and the Paradox game series (Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria and Hearts of Iron; they are too similar to be counted as different games :p ).
Had you omitted the RT, the answer would clearly be Civilization II.

Civilization 4. Its not really RTS though.

Is that set on earth?

All the Age of Empires are great, Rise of Nations is brilliant but flawed - like normal bombers being useless if they have so much as a couple of Anti-Aircraft guns, and I think the population and city limit should be larger (but that might just be the way I play).
What about Cossacks? I would definitely recommend that.

Cossacks was quite nice, large-scale combat and all that, but I found the campaigns to be incredibly hard after a few missions, so I turned to generic maps, which became boring relatively soon.

Get yourself Civilization II. It is the pinnacle of the genre.

The way i play, i always get tank rushed playing c+c online. Rise of nations just plain sucks ass, with its rubbish rock/paper/scissors combat method. Civilization call to power is an awesome game. Rome:total war is the best strategy/rts ive ever played i reckon.

I thought AoM was a nice contrast to AoK, but more as something to bide the time till the real AoE 3. When I learned of the plot, I was very disappointed. I want historical campaigns, not this secret society bullshit.

Seconded. AoM was a huge disappointment - or maybe it was the uphill battle versus WC3 that made it look like that. Although... from time to time i reinstall old games and play a little, but this never happened to AoM. Go figure.

I hereby damn you to a hell without videogames for not including Homeworld on your list of best RTS games.
Righteous Munchee-Love
24-02-2006, 23:20
I would have done so, but the OP requested games playing on earth, iirc. So technically, while not being fantasy, Homeworld does not play on earth.
But you are right, it was great. I still don´t understand how all the people I tried to interest in it couldn´t cope with the moving (movement? ) system.

I dunno. I've played some of the Civilization games, and I still prefer AoE to them (AoE2: Conquerors, especially). Maybe I'm biased, though, since in a past life I was a Cataphract ;)
