Colombia man 'jailed over grope'
A bicycle courier in Colombia has been given a four-year jail sentence for grabbing a woman pedestrian's bottom, a TV station has reported.
A judge's ruling - criticised by some as being too harsh - ruled the courier had committed an abusive sexual act.

Diana Marcela Diaz told RCN that the courier had cycled off after groping her, but had been caught by passers-by.

When he was arrested, she was given the option of slapping him, letting him go, or filing a complaint.

She had chosen to set a precedent that would stop sexist behaviour, she said.

RCN described the sentence as historic, but some lawyers condemned it as excessive.

A female member of the national ombudsman's office said the courier had only acted out of lust.

"He didn't use violence or commit a sexual act," she was quoted as saying.

I've got some better advice. Don't go to Colombia. Unless of course you like the idea of ending up a FARC hostage in the jungle.

I say eye for an eye.

She should grab his bottom. No more.

In general, that would probably punish the woman more than the man.

I admit it's too harsh, but it IS assault. Why do people seem to have a double standard about this? If it's a person of the opposite gender, people act like it's no big deal.

I don't care what his reason was -- he'd no right to touch another person without their consent. And if anyone is going to trot out the ol' guys can't help themselves defense -- don't bother, we all know that's not true.

Me, given those choices? I'd have slapped him so hard his great-grandkids would have felt it.

How do you know that? Are you sure she doesn't have strong hands? Or pinchers? Maybe she's got huge pincher's for hands! Who would hurt more then? /Homer-ish rant

I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished, all I am saying is that 4 years is a long time in prison for just that, when the drunk, or medicated (one or the other) ferry driver on staten island got only like 13 months for killing 11 people in that ferry accident.

should assgrabbers get more time in prison?

but then again its columbia

You know, there was a rapist over here who used that as a defence... "She had a short skirt and cleavage, she wanted it." kinda thing. His lawyer actually harassed the raped girl, calling her a tramp, and her own lawyer thought they should settle 'cause "the guy had a point".

I don't think I've ever seen such a huge media-rant in my life.

Can't compare apples and oranges -- two different law systems.
Again, I didn't say I didn't think it overly harsh -- I said it was assault.

(And I think there should have been a lot more penalties for the pilots of the SI Ferry incident... incidentally more for the captain than the pilot -- as he was in charge and not present to supervise as he was supposed to by law.)

When I pass the bar, I'll start the Lawyers With Soul And We Mean Heart Not Just Funk Association. LWSAWMHNJFA. We'll jive talk, listen to James Brown, and have dance-off-fund raisers for orphans.

18 months for the pilot, one year in jail for the former ferry director -- now the one year in jail for *him* I can't see... he wasn't on, nor was he supposed to be on, the ferry.

You shouldn't blame the victim. Even when the "victim" only got her ass grabed.

Anyway, I think women have a right, nay an obligation to wear really tight pants.

I agree that women should be forced to wear tight and/or revealing clothing, but we need to recognize the fact that when they do they're consenting to be groped.

Yes I do. Just as long as it's consentual I think it should be mandatory.

I never said anything about force. I could see how that could be inferred from saying that they have an obligation to wear tight or otherwise revealing clothing. There is an obligation, I just don't think it helps if we force them to fulfill that obligation.

4 years is mad long... You could actually hurt people and get alot less time then that. Sounds more than unfair, maybe a 30-day sentence would be ok.

This is a different country...keep that in mind. Perhaps in Colombia, spitting on the street gets you 18 months. (it doesn't...but you didn't know that until I told you:))
