Olympic Hockey: Canada, hang your head in SHAME

As a Canadian, I typically don't give a second thought to hockey... I know, that's so weird. My favourite sport is baseball.
But, when Olympics roll around, I watch all the sports with pride...
And then this happened.
1-0 Russia over Canada
And I FULLY blame Bertuzzi.
A STUPID and needless penalty lead to this goal happening. Bertuzzi doesn't know what a hockey stick is actually for (No, it's NOT a weapon), and he can't skate. He's ONLY there as a thug, and there's no room for that in GOOD Olympic hockey. Pronger didn't help, with his multiple penalties per game.
The team was bad.
They didn't deserve to win a medal, right after the third game.
I hope they hang their heads in shame.

On the plus side, our Canadian men curling team MURDERED the US!!! 5 points in the 9th end to cause the US to surrender victory 11-5!
And we got a couple gold and a couple silver medals so far.
Lots of good news... just our hockey team didn't deserve to be in the Olympics with their poor quality play.

At least you won more than one game.

I like curling. It's one of those wonderful scottish games which nobody really understands from the outside.

And yeah. our Canadian team didn't deserve it this time around. The Women's team was a helluva bright spot though. Plus that awards ceremony was babe-o-rama.

Preliminary games hardly count for anything. Canada's mens team was losing against countries it should have been able to walk all over with ease. As we got gold last Olympics, it would have been nice to at least show some effort towards trying to defend the gold. But to do that, you need to play as a team, not going around thugging other players and getting kicked off the ice.

Yeah, I usually don't care about it either. But, it's Olympics time, and I enjoy watching all of the competitions. :)
Except some of the snowboarding stuff... that I still don't care about. :p

Yeah, the women were amazing! Now THERE was a team that deserved gold all the way through!
Hmmm... too bad I missed the awards ceremony. ;)

To sum it up, the American girls were all tidy since they had time to shower, and were very lovely. The Swedes made short haircuts look really good. the Canadians were many of them supreme in that "take off the helmet and shake the hair out" kind of way. Yummy all around.

Canada lost today, slinking away from the quarterfinals with their tails between their legs, after being shutout by Russia. The Canadians were slow, soft, uninspired, poorly led, badly coached, badly managed, and it wouldn’t have surprised me if the team chef had a history of being fired for food poisoning, given the care taken with the rest of the team process.

The Canadian skaters were too slow and barely made an effort to finish their checks. Their lack of effort was the most embarrassing I’ve ever seen from a hockey team representing this country. They took stupid penalties and despite all of the leaders on this team there was no leadership. There didn’t seem to be any coaching, unlike other national teams, where they executed their plays instead of executing any chance of winning by continually making the wrong plays.

Management picked the team of two years ago and it was a disaster of an idea. I can’t believe that the brain trust couldn’t have figured this one out. The only reason the old gray mare picking method for uninspired veterans worked in the past was that there were enough injuries to allow younger players in the lineup by accident. This time, too many injured players decided to play anyways. When you have the kind of depth that Canada has in every position, it's ridiculous to have guys playing poorly and injured when they can be replaced so easily. 3 out of the top 12 NHL Canadian scorers this season were on this team! 5 out of the top 20! Only 8 out of the top 30! If the brain trust are scratching their collective heads about why they couldn’t score during this tournament they don’t need to look further than this. The person responsible for picking this team needs a serious reality check. There’s no problem with the development of hockey in Canada, but there has been a problem with the management of Team Canada ever since the NHL were allowed in the Olympics. It’s been a fluke that this hasn’t happened before now.

The only thing that wasn’t a complete disaster in this tournament was goaltending. Both Luongo and Brodeur were great, but unless they also scored goals there wasn’t much hope for Canada.

Afterwards, interviewed players were talking about how with so many players likely to be back in 2010 this would be a good learning experience for them. Except for the goalies, I don’t think a single member of this team should be allowed to ever represent our team internationally again, ever! Brodeur will probably be retired by 2010 anyways, so other than Luongo I don’t see a point for any of these clowns being given the chance to embarrass us twice.

Team USA also lost in the quarterfinals, after they also had an aweful tournament. The US was bad from top to bottom, from management all the way down the lines.

My post in the Wysterian Forum about the initial roster choices:

Czech Republic upset Slovakia 3-1 though right? Since I still have relatives there, and enjoy Bohemian food I shall root for them. (shakes fist at US hockey team)

Amen to that! Kick all the bums out and start over from scratch! Can't do much worse...

I wouldn't go so far as to call them all bums. I do think that maybe professional hockey players shouldn't get to hit the Olympics.

Unless of course Darcy Tucker gets to go.
