I've finally found a religion I can agree with!
US court backs hallucinogenic tea

The group blends Christian beliefs and South American traditions
A small US congregation can use hallucinogenic tea as part of its rituals to connect with God, the Supreme Court has ruled.
...
Members of the group believe they can understand God only by drinking the tea, which is consumed twice a month at four-hour ceremonies.
The brewed tea, made from two plants that grow in the Amazon, contains dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, a controlled substance banned under federal drug laws.

Have to wonder whether this sets a precedent. Would Rastafarians now be able to challenge the law to allow them to smoke dope? I can't see why not.

then why can't native americans use mescaline in their rituals?
isn't that a slight christian bias seeing how many native americans have been using hallucinogens in their religious rituals for hundereds or thousands of years? (or have i been misinformed?)

apart from that... still cool though :D

Hmmm, so where exactly is this church and when are the congregations? I'm just asking out of, y'know, curiosity.

Maybe they just haven't bothered to legally challenge it. Yet.

maybe this christian congregation can afford more fancy-pants lawyers...

who knows (sorry - a friend of mine (mescaline lover) was forever going on about the injustice of this issue... some of that seems to have rubbed off on me :p)

So, basically, they're saying, "You can use this halucinogen, but only if you FIRST convince yourself that there is a magical being who you can contact by drinking tea." In other words, only people who are already halucinating can use the halucinogen.

If you read the article properly, you'll notice it says that the sect believe that they can only understand God when they drink the tea.
So that means they think God is a total headcase who's smashed out of His head on hallucinogenic drugs. That's a pretty scary thought that the guy who created everyrthing was smashed at the time. What if He gets the munchies and tries to eat a star system or two? What if He drops the universe down the sofa and forgets about it?
It would explain why He hasn't been around lately. He's probably been staring at some pulsar for the last 2000 years, going 'wow man...I can see the music'

You have been misinformed. It is legal for native americans to use peyote for religious purposes.

http://www.nativeamericanchurch.com/law.html

(1) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the use, possession, or transportation of peyote by an Indian for bona fide traditional ceremonial purposes in connection with the practice of a traditional Indian religion is lawful, and shall not be prohibited by the United States or any State. No Indian shall be penalized or discriminated against on the basis of such use, possession or transportation, including, but not limited to, denial of otherwise applicable benefits under public assistance programs.

Have to wonder whether this sets a precedent.imo the precedent is that during the prohibition wine was still allowed for religious purposes.

Rastafarians

Rastafarians are members of a Jamaican messianic movement dating back to the 1930s. According to Rastafarian belief the only true God is the late Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie (originally known as Ras Tafari), and Ethiopia is the true Zion. Rastafarians claim that white Christian preachers and missionaries have perverted the Scriptures to conceal the fact that Adam and Jesus were black. Their rituals include the use of marijuana and the chanting of revivalist hymns. Reggae music is the popular music of the movement, notably Bob Marley.

No need to join a religion. Make your own tea at home. Extract the DMT from the root bark of acacia trees or mimosa plants, brew it up with some Syrian Rue, which contains the Harmaline you'll need and you've got a pretty good copy of Ayahuasca tea. I won't include instructions for the extraction because it may be illegal to do it.
