It would be cool if the only people that died there were extremists, but I'm willing to bet that there were decent people that were killed or injured from it.

You can imagine the pitch...

"OK, pitch for Infinite Justice, and your time starts...now."

"Right, the scene is a fictional Middle East country...we can film in Egypt...there's hordes of foreign types...terrorists, dark, all wearing sunglasses and beards...we have a heroine...ex-glamour model...only she can - "

"OK, uhm...I'm not so sure. I'm kinda thinking this has been done before?"

oh
fuck

this is the sort of thing that starts civil war.

we dont want civil war in iraq. you know that right? civil war ruins what is left of the tatters of the US hopes for a peaceful democratic iraq.

the shiite majority ally with iran. our more long term enemy

the kurds declare independance. turkey wont allow that, they take the kurdish part of iraq and ruin turkey's chances of entering the EU. when the EU tells turkey to fuck off where does turkey turn to for friends? oh yeah, radical islam

the sunnis are the "bad guys" but they are the only group who are interested in a united secular iraq. too bad theyre assholes.

Shiite leaders called for calm, but militants attacked Sunni mosques and a gunfight broke out between Shiite militiamen and guards at the offices of a Sunni political party in Basra. About 500 soldiers were sent to Sunni neighbourhoods in Baghdad to prevent clashes between Shiites and Sunnis, army Capt. Jassim al-Wahash said.

A leading Sunni politician, Tariq al-Hashimi, said 29 Sunni mosques had been attacked nationwide. He urged clerics and politicians to calm the situation ''before it spins out of control.''

A government statement said several suspects had been detained in the early-morning attack on the Askariya shrine in this city about 100 kilometres north of Baghdad, and some of them ''might have had been involved in carrying out the crime.''

No group claimed responsibility, but suspicion fell on Sunni extremist groups like ''al-Qaida in Iraq,'' led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

The Interior Ministry said four men, one wearing a military uniform and three in black, entered the mosque early Wednesday and detonated two bombs, one of which collapsed the dome into a crumbly mess and damaged part of the northern wall of the shrine.

Police said late Wednesday afternoon no casualties had been found. Earlier they believed people may have been buried under the debris.

The shrine contains the tombs of two revered Shiite imams, both descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.

Maybe we should stop thinking of these explosions as Middle Eastern problems and start thinking of them as Middle Eastern culture. See, now it's all better.

Oh, heck... It isn't getting better either.
The bombing of the Askariya shrine, also known as the Golden Mosque, in the city of Samarra caused no known casualties, but it sparked an outpouring of rage by Iraq's majority Shiite Muslims. The blast appeared designed to further inflame sectarian tensions between the Shiites and the Sunni Arab population from whose ranks the bulk of the country's insurgency is drawn.

Despite calls for calm by political and religious leaders, angry Shiite militants attacked more than two dozen Sunni mosques in retaliation, burning down two of them, new agencies reported. At least six people were reported killed in the violence, including three Sunni clerics.

He has a point. Maybe they will wear themselves out with their own extremism, and prompt the Muslim world at large to finally uproot them. An internal destruction.

Well, the insurgency in Iraq is already waging war against Al-Qaeda, so it's a possibility. I'd like there to be as little violence as possible, but if attacks like this ultimately result in Muslims turning on terrorism it could be a good thing in the long run.

However, I'm concerned that this is more an attempt to start a civil war than a random terror attack.

Well, not really. Don't blame what few people do on the majority.

And Kievan, these fights don't last long, so the excitement you're getting from this won't lead to an orgasm .
