Best Movie Nominations
I figured I'd make a poll to determine the best movie of the last 20 years.
Of course, my own taste does not necessarily match that of other people, so this is the thread where you nominate a movie. The ten that get the most nominations will be in a poll in a future thread.
RULES
1. All movies must have been released in 1986 or later.
2. Only ONE nomination per person
3. You may second the nomination of as many other movies that other people nominate as you like.
---
I'll nominate...
American History X

I think I shall opt to nominate 'La Haine'.
I also really liked 'The Madness of King George'. But 'La Haine' is sticking in my mind.
I need to find a copy of La Haine. I haven't watched it in ages.
edit:...or known in the US as 'Hate'. Why do they have to change the name of films and books that get imported in the US. Stupid corparations trying to dumb things down (at least they didn't dub it).

I think 'The Madness of King George' was originally titled 'The Madness of King George III' , but renamed for the American market as they would not watch it without seeing the prequels, '..George I' and '....George II'

IMDb says it had the III in Australia. Alan Bennet is good playwright from what I've seen.
I nominate The Shawshank Redemption.
(I actually preferred Ghost World, but I doubt that would get as many votes.)

Thats a bit like the Harry Potter book/film 'Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone' being renamed 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerers stone' for the US market, If I was American I would be mighty pissed that my film and book industry think I would be unable to understand the original titles of things...its totally patronising.
As for a good film...I have a list...sorry
The English Patient (partly beacuse of the Oscar acceptance speech made By Antony Mingella)
The Green Mile
Saving Private Ryan
Forrest Gump
Gladiator
There's Something about Mary
I could go on and on.....
I cant say ONE film, there are too many I like and my favorite changes depending on my mood.
yes Shawshank too...see?

I preferred it to the movie. Both are great, but the book gives more insight into Chief Bromden because its from his prespective.
It's all subjective, though. You should read it.

Spirited Away or Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. Absolute masterpiece -makes you realise just how rubbish disney films are. Never understand why people are so fond of Shawshank Redemption - always find it emotionally manipulative rather than genuinely moving.

I think before submitting any nominations, it would be prudent to determine exactly what "best" means in this case. One reasonable way would be to determine the intensity of enjoyment one experienced while watching a particular movie, which really means that there are no right or wrong answers, hence no clear winners.

I also loved Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption, Donnie Darko, and yes I even *cough* own the Transformer movie on DVD (I was young and impressionable when it came out! Although I have watched it again recently and still enjoyed it).

Erhm...I'd prefer to not change any nominations, otherwise everyone else will want to do so as well once a movie they like has been nominated.
Methinks you forgot the English Patient (seconded at least once).
Only you and one other person mentioned the English Patient, and the other person also listed several other movies without specifying which one they wanted to nominate.
You'd have to change your official nomination to the English Patient, and as I stated above, I'd prefer not to do so. Should someone else nominate it, I will mark you down as having seconded it.
