Been in power a week? Haven't even faced the opposition on the floor of the commons yet? Aready the laughingstock of the country after completely eviscerating the platform you ran on as your first order of business? Did that without even warning your own caucus that you were poaching from the opposition while you had a bill on the table to prevent that very act?

What do you do?

Simple!

Fire your communications director for not having been able to properly spin the fact that you're a complete hypocrite!!! OTTAWA—Prime Minister Stephen Harper has replaced his communications chief just two weeks after taking office, in what will be seen as a blunt acknowledgement of the bad public-relations tone set by his first days in power.

The Prime Minister's Office issued a terse statement late last night, announcing that the new communications director was Sandra Buckler, who was the lead person in the Conservatives' "war room" during the election campaign.

Yep. It was all his fault that you pissed off even your own people through a gross display of arrogant miscalculation on your very first decision in power. Best put a revolving door on THAT office if that's your way of dealing with the fact that bad decisions get bad press....

IF this gov't makes it that far. ;) :p

In all seriousness... yeah, Harper has no personality. He doesn't give a damn about Canadians, and what we think. He's going to keep as much from us as possible, because he knows we won't like the Americanization that he wants to bring to the country. This gov't is not going to last two years like people hope, and I predict either total voter apathy next time, or an NDP minority/majority! ;)
That's my 2 cents, anyway.

It does not seem to be affecting their popularity, though.

OTTAWA — Canadians seem prepared to cut Prime Minister Stephen Harper some slack.

A new poll suggests the popularity of the federal Conservatives has climbed slightly since last month's election, even as some of Mr. Harper's cabinet choices remain controversial.

You look at the details of that story, it's not all that rosy - except for in Quebec where he has gained as the Seperatists have made a few gaffes since the election:

The Conservatives have been given a "get-out-of-jail-free card" after the appointment of Michael Fortier as a senator and Public Works Minister and Liberal-turned-Conservative MP David Emerson to the International Trade portfolio, Mr. Gregg said yesterday. "They are still solvent, but they've got far less goodwill."

The survey of 1,000 people between Feb. 16 and 19 suggests support for the Conservatives has increased to 39 per cent nationally since the Jan. 23 election, when the party garnered 36 per cent of the popular vote. That rise is directly attributable to respondents in Quebec, where support for the Tories has increased to 31 per cent from 25 per cent since the election. The Bloc Québécois fell five percentage points to 37 per cent in the province.

The Tories' popularity remained stagnant across the rest of the country despite outcry over the appointments, particularly that of Mr. Emerson.

There are, of course, knee-jerk supporters who will never waver. Their support above that is dubious at best for most of Canada. If they have had one advantage to holding their current meagre level of support it is that the Liberals are leaderless and so have not had a well-known mouthpiece to capitalize on the gaffes.
