Rocket-Pistols, biznitch!

A testament to just how crazy we were back in the day. Back in the late sixties a weapon known as the "gyrojet" was developed by a California Company M.B.A.

Boom! (http://www.littlegun.be/arme%20americaine/gyrojet%201960%20-02.jpg)

It fired a .50 caliber, rocket-propelled slug through a smooth bore barrel. Spin was achieved through angled gas-ports.

I guess there was a bit of..."validity" to that whole "rocket-pistol-wielding-ninja" thing from "You Only Live Twice"...except without the ninjas.

The weapons in You Only Live Twice were Gyrojets.

That was actually what I first thought. When I first saw the movie I bauked at the idea, then when I was putzing around online a stumble upon this little gem, and I'm liek "HOLI SHITE!".

In a nutshell at least.

The problem with the guns, though, is that they are easy to fuck up by getting them dirty/damaged and are absolute shit at close range.

Yeah, the "rocket-bullet" doesn't get to its full speed at close range, or it doesn't even go off at that range.

And the nice little holes on the side clog up something awful.
Still, maybe in a decade or so someone will make a try at recreating them with better technology. That and the Pancor Jackhammer may someday find their way into the hearts and weapons chests of every crazy in America.

The magazine Small Arms Review had a testfiring of the Gyrojet (they are extremely collectible).

Not very accurate, not explosive, and can be stopped at the muzzle with little effort.

But once they've gone about 15 feet, they are about as hard hitting as a 45 ACP pistol cartridge - if you hit something.

My understanding is that both the American and British efforts in this field were stymied by lack of accuracy. They just didn't hit what you aimed at.

Now, add a heat seeking warhead...

Thus having very low recoil and so making it much more convenient to use in zero-G than conventional weapons, if I remember my Classic Traveller footnotes correctly.

Much better than those 'lasers' they had in Moonraker, anyway.
