Why would you want to be a part of the system?
I already am. This will help me smite mine enemies.

But really, I will use the Law for GOOD.

And make considerably less money than I do as a teacher, as a result.

Yes. It is much better to flip burgers and be helpless in the face of our legal system than it is to equip oneself with the tools to use and/or fight the system.

Congratulations, Sinuhue.

The UofA is an interesting campus. It has a mall that students live in, direct access to the LRT, a very cool radio station, a state of the art Fine Arts building, and the coolest mural I've ever seen.

There are also several urban legends associated with the campus. One involves the old fine arts building. If you go to the top floor where all the drama offices are (or used to be), you will notice a patio in the center of the building that can not be accessed from the inside, but is set up so that anyone on the patio can get in. Legend has it that it was designed and built so that the government could then land a helicopter in this patio to disgorge soldiers in the case of a student uprising.

The other urban legend is a little creepier. One evening a student came out of the SUB (student union building) and then cut through a small green area behind this older building that stands just west of the bus stop. Several friends were waiting for him at the other end, but they waited in vain, as he never came out. Many theories abound as to his disappearance, including UFOs.

Have a beer at the RATT for me, and once again, congratulations. You deserve it.

I quite enjoyed the U of A the first time round...and I expect this will be even better, as I won't have the first-year nervousness, or the awe of grad students, or any of the other stupid notions I had at that time. I've been out in the real world, I know bullshit when I see it, and I'm there to get an education...not to get drunk and laid. Well...that will be an aside, rather than the main purpose:) It's going to be superfantasticawesome!

How long will you have to attend before you are a full fledged lawyer?
Three years of school, one year articling with a firm, and then I take the Bar exam. So four years, give or take. But just like graduating with an Ed degree doesn't a teacher make...I suspect it will be a few years of actual practice before I can really consider myself to be a full-fledged lawyer. I'm looking now for a firm that will pay part of my tuition in return for a few years dedicated to working for them. Apparently, this is very common outside of the teaching professions:)

This should be interesting, because there are only 175 students admitted to law in any given year. We remain grouped together until the third year where we start branching out into our own particular interests. It will be a lot less anonymous than the 500 plus students per class of my first year at University...but I also had the chance to take grad level courses as an undergrad, where I had seminars with 11 others. Those were fantastic compared to the mega-classes. This will be somewhat similar.

It's funny that I'm so excited...when I graduated I swore I'd never go back.

And you'll be a sexy bitch among 174 other members of the walking eyesore faculty. Congrats on winning. [So does studying with other hot sociologists]
I really hope you're wrong about Law being the eyesore faculty. Because I was pretty sure that was the Faculty of Agriculture.

I have the doubtful pleasure of inhabiting a flat with two of the aforementioned specimen, and the entailing privilege of getting to know quite some law students. Your hope is based on naiveness, honey.

There is no such abomination as a Faculty of Agriculture at my uni, so I shall not speak of that matter.
(Quite apart from there being enough ugliness to go around for two faculties)

Hmmm, I saw enough hottage over my years at Uni, and more recently during a summer session course to assure me that your dire predictions are false. I shall not be left bereft, even if I have to raid other faculties for squirmilicious hotties. I'm sure, however, that there will be enough eye candy available to me within my own faculty, thank you very much. *stomps off in a huff*:D

Why were there never any teacher jokes?

There were. They were the lack of respect and lack of pay, and the bitching that we don't raise other people's kids for them.

The best response I got to my question was that the biggest joke is the salary. It's funny because it's true!

It is a compliment, dear lady. I admire you, even if I am one of those mouth-breathing Yanks south of your border. :) May you love what you're doing now.

(BTW one of my favorite relatives is a patent lawyer... I like 'em just fine.)

Okay, I just had the weirdest experience...someone actually CALLED me from the Faculty of Law to see if I had received the news that I'd been accepted. This has been the kind of helpful, close contact I've had with people at the Faculty since I first applied...miles away from the 'who are you' blank stares of the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education (where I got my first degree) anytime I had a question. There are a series of orientation sessions, and as an aboriginal student, I'll be assigned an aboriginal mentor who is practicing law, as well as an upper level student to help me plan out my studies. This is friggin' bizarre! I'm used to being a lost cog in the machine...

I'm not going to list them again. They might get inflated egos. (I was of course going to say swollen heads, but some of them are female:))

Ah well. Worth a shot. So how many years does this course-degree-thingumy last?

(stupid tv made me think I was finished and ended early. /edit)

There is no more detail. It's just "medicine." I will end up being a doctor, I just won't have a speciality at the end. For that, I have to specialise for an additional 5 years after the 5,5 years of med school + 20 month internship (we call it AT - allmäntjänstgöring - which means "general practice").
*sigh* To qualify for General Practice here is four years after your internship, which is one year (I'm doing SEVEN years on campus- with an Arts degree as well) but to specialise in anything else needs six years. I'm going into my fourth year this year. I'm... slightly less than halfway through the unpaid bit... :p
What year are you in Fass?

And our lectures would have 200 people in them. That does suck, and it's hard to maintain concentration. Tutorials are much better though, they have around 12 people and is where you do the actual learning!

Sounds like a plan... we can reclaim all the states worth having, anyway...

Or... just for the giggles... we can annex the whole thing, hand the land back to the natives, and march anyone that complains half way across the country to the camps we'll build to house them...

Exactly. And we'll ban heterosexuals from adopting children. They will reproduce and then give their children to the obviously less oppressive gay couples to learn tolerance. ;)

And we'll march all the rich people from California and make them live in Jersey. That'll learn them. The New Jesey Non-Native American reservation where the only occupations available will be immitating Non-Native American culture for tourists by sitting in front of a television belching and scratching ourselves and denying responsibility for ANYTHING and bitching about how foreigners stole our jobs while ordering our Mexican maid to clean my toilet.

EDIT: Seriously, Sin, if you find a way to create a reservation, succeed from the Union and create a new civilization, I better be invited. I make some outstanding chili.
