The "Evil Corporation"

It's something that every sci-fi fan and budding communist has dreamed about and feared; a company that has the size and power to control all aspects of a person's life.

It was this way in America during the late 1800s into the early 1900s, with offices being bought out by guys like Rockerfeller, and attempts at workers rights met with violence sanctioned by the government.

Thankfully it has lessened signifigantly. Nevertheless those who abuse the capitalist system still have a sizable hold over our country, and there are even those who can be considered "of low morality" (i.e. "evil").

For instance, I don't shop at Wal-Mart out of principle.

But, as is my way, I would like to know what you think. Is there any corporation that exists today that you would consider..."evil"?

Thank you for indulging in my madness.

Being a programmer, I'm obviously going to say Microsoft. Threatening national governments is pretty damned evil.

Nazitech.com is pretty creepy, and I have no idea why Nuclear Death Corporation of Meggido is still allowed to stay in business after blowing up half of Africa.

Wal-Mart, without a doubt.

Halliburton readily comes to mind.

McWane (sp?) pipes company (the New York Times has been doing a series of articles on them).

Shell Oil.

Starbucks, sadly.

Basically, a LOT of different companies are what I would consider "evil". And I bet we don't even know a tiny percentage of them. Like, the ones mentioned above are probably angels compared to others out there, like e.g. the owners of those Chinese mines where workers keep dying by the hundreds.

Often enough, the evilness comes when they go public. Whatever evil acts are committed not out of personal greed by the owners, are committed out of maximizing profit for the sake of stock holders.

ETA: How could I forget Monsanto?!?

I wouldn't say there are any that I would call truly evil (if only because I don't believe in the concept), but there are plenty that are greedy, bossy, short-sighted, and exploitive and simply do too much harm to be ignored, even if that harm is motivated by mental laziness and cheapness rather than outright malice.

... such corporations are not an abuse of capitalism, but rather its ultimate fulfillment.

I can't think of any but as soon as we have a corporation controlling us I'm going to buy all their tchotchkes!

Mass control by the corporation!

Heaven!

Quite easily. I'm trying to wean my mum and dad off of google and onto MSN. It makes the most obvious choice, as I dream of being controlled by a corporation.

Heaven=Microsoft!

I might translate that into Binary if I have the time.

They are the ultimate fulfillment of allowing government interference into markets better left on their own, thus, noncapitalist.

There are a lot of unethical corporations. What I'd really like to see is something like Fireball Corp in Harvest of Stars by Poul Anderson. That'd be cool.

This would be my pick. I don't see most of the others as "evil," just avaricious.

IIRC - they pump water up from underground reserves at their bottling plants, thus causing shortages in those villages located close by who used to depend on the same water source. Thus increased reliance on rainfall to cover all their increased needs, thus an effective drought.
