American Staffordshire Terrier, thoughts?

Me and my girlfriend who I happen to live with are thinking of getting a dog. Currently we're looking into the Amstaff, anyone had one, got one or been bitten by one?
Basicly, we want a friendly dog which looks dangerous and the Amstaff does look alot like a pitbull, but from what I've read and heard, they have a better temper. Can anyone back this up or shoot this down?

I don't have experience with the breed myself, but anything with the name "Staffordshire Terrier" is not something I would recommend. They are popular pets here in Oz, and as expected they are also responsible for the most deaths and injuries.

Get a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Very nice-looking dogs, perfectly capable of scaring away a burglar and not overly aggressive either.

Yeah, ridgebacks are truly nice, but the whole idea of getting a dog is that we live in a rough town and need the dog so my girlfriend can walk outside after dark... Could it not be as with golden retrivers here in sweden? They are the most common dog, and thus most people get hurt by them even compared to classical "fighting dogs" and guarding dogs like pitbulls and dobbermanns? From what we've read, this particular breed is in the UK refered to as "The Nanny dog" along with Staffordshire Bullterrier for their love for kids:) (As in, they love to play with them and guard them, not eat them, silly;))

Say no more.

A Rottweiler will do it.

Get a Mini Schnauzer. Tons of attitude in a little package. Can look dangerous depending on how long you let the hair get (to short and it looks dumb). Very friendly little dogs (not so much to little kids). Love to play and tear around.

Hehe, yeah, I love Rottweilers, sadly, my girlfriend does not... they're too big and if they want to go somewhere, she couldn't ever resist... she's tiny:)

Hey, if staffordshire is too hard, you can always say Amstaff, everyone does;)
