So a few years ago a ruling was made that companies could get patents on new life forms. This was done to protect genetic engineering discoveries. Since then nearly everything has received a patent. Now Mosanto has decided to corner the pork market with a patent on pigs.

I suspect this application will be denied. At least I hope it will be.

This sort of thing will continue until the public outcry forces change, just as it did with child labor, union-busting, the robber barons, etc. I just hope it doesn't take too long.

It's probably not as serious as you might think. It all depends on the specifics of the patent, whether it is for all pigs (extremely unlikely) or for a specific genetically modified variant (more likely). It is next to impossible to apply for a patent on all pigs, but it is understandable that they would seek to protect an investment of billions of dollars in a specific genetic variant of pig.
