It seems I'm always hearing the phrase "...in the real world." At first, I didn't really care when people told me "you'll never make it in the real world" or "you won't know what to do when you get out of high school and into the real world." Unfortunately for those people, now I want to know what they mean by "the real world." I guess I'll start by asking people here what they think first.
I guess it's when you have to support yourself without someone else taking care of your expenses, room/board, education, clothing, etc. Pretty much, it's when you're on your own and are responsible for everything.

Its essentially a way for one person to try and lord over another, because the first person thinks he has it so hard and the second has it so easy.

The world where people really don't care about the state of your existence?

the real world is closely related to the boogeyman. its that scary place you go when you leave your parents house and make all your own decisions.
take a look around. every adult you see was at one time not able to make it in the real world.
they adjusted
so will you. its just a bullshit thing that people say to teens who arent behaving the way they think they should.

There are also adults in prison, living in poverty, stuck in a miserable job, or that feel unhappy about their lives. However, it's also up to everyone's definition of "make it." If your definition is getting life in prison instead of being shot in the street, then I guess you have "made it."
