Calif. Woman, 62, Gives Birth to Baby Boy

REDDING, Calif. - A 62-year-old woman gave birth Friday to a healthy 6-pound, 9-ounce baby boy, becoming one of the oldest women in the world to successfully bear a child.

Janise Wulf gave birth to her 12th child. She is also a grandmother of 20 and a great-grandmother of three.

Family members said the delivery went smoothly, despite earlier concerns about the mother's health. Wulf, a diabetic, experienced swelling and higher blood pressure earlier this week, prompting doctors to perform the Caesarean section a week early.

Wulf and her third husband, Scott, 48, named the red-haired boy Adam Charles Wulf. He follows just 3 1/2 years behind his older brother, Ian.

"I hate to raise one alone, without a sibling," said Wulf, who was impregnated both times through in vitro fertilization.

The oldest woman on record to give birth is a 66-year-old Adriana Iliescu of Romania, who had a Caesarean section Jan. 15, 2005.

The Guinness Book of World Records also lists two 63-year-old women who have given birth: Rosanna Della Corte of Italy in 1994 and Acheli Keh of California in 1996. News reports, however, list Della Corte's age at 62 when she gave birth.

I didn't think women this old could give berth. Soon you will be seeing Maternity Wards in Geriatric care buildings *shudders* scary.

My God....

How does that happen, I mean, was her geriatric club having a party one night and she got knocked up?

She probably was involved with one of these,

No, too old.

She is 62, she figured she would carry on the baby boom from the old days, birth control be damned.

Old men have children all the time. I don't see how this is any different. More unusual, but no more different than some 60 year old geezer knocking up some trophy wife.

...ummm...I dunno...I figured it was unusual because men don't necesarrily have the whole "biological clock" thing going on.....and what are the chances this kid has Down's Syndrome anyways?

I was going to say something about teaching people of all ages about contraception, but as this was in vitro fertilisation.... I'll best keep my mouth shut before people yell at me again for hating kids.

It's unusual because women supposedly go through menopause at around 40-50 and then stop producing eggs. I don't know if this is the case, menopause is happening later in life nowadays, but the article says her last two pregnancies were through in-vitro fertilization, so it may be. Not many women get pregnant at that age, or want to.

None, as she probably would have aborted it when they screened. You do know that you can know before the child is born if it has Down's?

Yeah, but the babies don't incubate themselves inside the man and burst out like in an Alien movie. Completely different situation.

Not really, no. The biology may be different, but the principle isn't: If we aren't appalled that 60+ men have children, we should not be appalled that women have them at that age, either.

The rarity of it is what makes it noteworthy. As you have noticed, no one gives a flying flick if a 78 y.o. geezer impregnates a 20 y.o. trophy wife, but the female organs work a bit different and it's extremely rare for a woman over 60 to become pregnant.

Now, if your problem is with those that say it's wrong, take it up with them.

If you haven't noticed, people here aren't exactly going "way to go, grandma." Instead they are making disparaging comments.

Was it a real child or IVF? Also, if people want so many children, there are plenty of pleasant children in adoption agencies around the world that really need a home. Women like her make me somewhat sick. Seriously four real kids is enough...and that is pushing it...hell 4 kids is enough. But, after that, please adopt some poor, hungry child in an orphanage like I plan to do when I'm a wee older.

Yes, it's quite dumb to disparage this grandmother. It's her body, let her do what she wants with it.

What do you mean "real"? As far as I know kids conceived through IVF or other methods are as real as the old-fashioned ones.

How many kids have you adopted?

IVF is artificially achieved and also there is that way of giving birth to a different person's egg. By real, I meant...well you know...
