Real countries as nation states

I was wondering how people out there would put their countries down as nation states blurbs, and would like to see them written. Take a real life country, judge its political freedoms, economy, and civil rights, and write a blurb.
Please try to keep these as funny and inoffensive as possible. Thank you.

UK

Democratic socialists ... Political Freedoms in this state would be regarded as average, while the government is omnipresent and has much say in the economy, with citizens having few economic rights

or ...

Left-wing Utopia
The democratic government grants broad civil rights but keeps a tight leash on business. Citizens are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

UK politics is definitely undergoing a shift under Tony Blair. It's definitely more authoritarian - physically throwing old and frail pensioners out of labour party conferences when they have the temerity to protest, expressing reservations about the freedom of speech, ID Cards, Religious Bills, Smoking Bans etc

I'm undecided if it's lurching left (socialist-esque) or right (free market). So what have they done?? Labour got rid of clause IV (commitment to nationalisation) but increased taxes, they stopped the ports privatisation programme and renewed the charter of the state-run TV company. They are also proponents of CAP reform (even if TB gets stitched up by JChirac on a regular basis), supported the EU General Services Directive and frequently call for free trade.

Hmmm. I guess that I have to judge them by what they do rather than what they say. Sooooo, it looks like UK has become more authoritarian and moved more to the left.

I'm partway through (well, one nation through) constructing NS-style XML feeds for real nations:

Each requires quite a lot of research on government spending, so naturally takes ages.

The United States of America

The United States of America is a large, economically powerful nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 300 million are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The large, corrupt, pro-business government devotes most of its attentions to Defence, with areas such as the Environment and Education receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 28%, but much higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Retail, IT and Arms Manufacturing industries.

Crime is a major problem. America's national animal is the Eagle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Dollar.

America is ranked 1st in the region and 1st in the world for Largest Retail Sector.

Sounds kind of fitting, Leonstein... what category is that?
Where do you get the descriptions for the categories?

I'd say it's between "Capitalist" and "Compulsory Consumerist State"... and if they continue to torpedize the civil rights, they'll be between "Right-Wing Utopia" and "Corporate Police State".

Wasn't this a bit of a fad about 2 years ago?

Never thought I'd see it again.
