But am I the only one thinking 'wtf'?

With his face shrouded in bruises and scars on his eyelid and neck
One wonders which bruises came from being shot and which are the result of Cheney's minders explaining how he should chose to interpret his unfortunate experience.

I've never been hunting before (Edit: I do have experience with firearms, however), but it seems to me that Mr. Whittington first left the group and then failed to make sure that the group knew where he was at all times and failed to make sure that the group knew he was returning, from what direction, etc. As such, it seems to me that he is just as responsible as Cheney for this accident.

Yes, it is the responsibility of the one pulling the trigger to make sure that he is using his firearm in a safe manner. But it should also be the responsibility of the other hunters around him to make sure that they do not make themselves into a target.

*snip*

I think it is the responsibility of the shooter, and only the shooter, to make sure that he is aiming at a quail and not a person before he pulls the trigger, and to not shoot on reflex.

When Bob shot Roger in a similar accident many years ago, no one made a big deal about it. :headbang:

I take it you are not a hunter. Everyone in the party has to obligation to let others know where he is going when he leaves, and how he is coming when he returns. He should also return the same way he went when he left.

I just read the rest of the article, and it seems like politicians have fetish for geting embroiled in hunting accidents.

And Cheney is not absolved of responsibility. Absolutely not.

But ultimately each individual involved needs to take measures to ensure his safety. Cheney failed to operate his firearm safely. Whittington failed to secure his own personal safety. Taken together, an accident occured.

Who are Bob and Roger?

Who are Bob and Roger?

My point exactly. They were a couple of Sergeants in the Air Force who were good friends and hunting buddies. The accident happened about 1964 in western Oklahoma. Had Cheney not been the VP no one would have ever heard about this accident either.

Next week, Cheney's daughter plans to hold a press-conference to apologize to her father for being gay!

Ahh, I thought it was a couple famous American guys.

Though it is hardly surprising, Cheney is [in]famous, it is hardly surprising he may be the subject of news reports. Prince Harry smokes pot, all the papers covers. When I smoke it, not one paper reports it. Not even the local one which reports cat getting stuck in trees.

Um. The local law enforcement would have heard about it regardless.

But, yes, sometimes being the VP means you get more press. :headbang:

EDIT: When I got blowjobs in the 90s, I didn't get impeached either.

Try wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party and see if the newspaper notices. :D

We don't. We are bored, I'm snowbound in the house, and we need something to talk about. :D

I actually did that at school once.

Though my costume didn't raise the most eyebrows.

"Mr. Cheney, I'm sorry I got shot and almost ruined your career. Thank God that I didn't die, because I know that the shitstorm my death would cause would result in a retaliation against my family."

"And no, I wasn't threatened into making this apology..."

Tell them you smoke pot then they can report you getting arrested.

I take it you're not a boy scout (or have ever had any formal training in weapon handling). You never, ever, fire a gun if you aren't sure of your target. Firing behind you when you don't know where someone of your party is is a major no-no.

Whittington neglected his obligation to inform the party and Cheney shot him. Whittington made a slight mistake, but Cheney made a big one. Cheney should be the one apologizing, not Whittington.

I really don't get the "big deal" about any of this.

Accidents happen. People need to stop making a mountain out of a molehill.

But hunters and firearms experts questioned whether birdshot from a 28-gauge shotgun, known as a "gentleman's gun" because the ammunition is expensive and the firearm is light, could have passed through Mr. Whittington's clothes and entered his thoracic cavity at such a distance.

Basically, most of the pellets bounced off. This really isn't a huge deal.

Sounds just a bit more painful than getting hit with a shitload of airsoft pellets and paintballs from a distance.
