i saw on the news yesterday that the medical examiner ruled that the kid had died not from the beating but from some kind of sickle cell complication. the family really needs to get independant confirmation fo that eh?

and they need to find out if there was a delay in getting him to the hospital that could have saved his life.

and those guards need to go to jail for a while.

There will be three weeks of press stories then a crisis in the middle east and it'll get pushed off the headlines then it wont sell them newspapers or get them viewers so noone will remember there wont be any pressure to punish the guards and nothing will happen.

That's American disciplinary strategy for you... Why bother teaching troubled kids compassion and understanding when you can teach them fear instead?

Unfortunatly, there's alot of people that agree with this sentiment. One of my sets of foster parents were among them. :(

These places are sick and ought to be shut down.

Parents USUALLY send their kids there when they get out of control. Like we are talking to the point where they commit crimes, hijacks cars, or even physically fight their parents.

The law isn't with parents anymore, so usually the alternative is to send them to boot camp.

As for this kid, depends on what medical studies show. If he was physically unfirt for the boot camp, why the hell would the mother send her there? If what really killed him was the beating (I've been through longer then half an hour beating) then arrest the fuckers.

At least they never looked at his penis or showed him thiers. That would have been worse than killing him.

If the guards don't get carried away like they clearly did in this case these camps help kids learn some self-control. It is certainly prefrable then sending them to juvie which is what could happen without doing something about these troubled kids.

Sadly, the reason that parents send their kids there is mostly because they were not good at parenting, and after the schools fail to socialize and discipline their children for them, they are at a loss. Pretty much every well behaved person I know had a parent or parental figure who taught them right from wrong. And the kids I see that end up in these places have parents who haven't got a clue as to how to do that. Really, what I believe, is that if a kid gets sent to a boot camp or to juvie, the parents should be sentenced to the same exact thing. If set up properly, parents could get parenting lessons as part of the punishment, then everybody wins.

Heh - i've seen similar stuff on American talk shows.

What they'll do is get a seemingly normal teenager who fights with their parents (what teenager doesn't?) and smokes pot, then drag them along to a Boot camp and treat them like shit to give them 'respect'. I've also seen one where they take pot smokers to a pretend prison and get actors to pretend to yell abuse at them and take a homosexual interest in them.

It seemed pretty sick to me.

We tried teaching "troubled" kids compassion and understanding. They couldn't grasp the concept.

When you tell kids the truth about where they're headed in life, now they say "you can't say that, you have to be supportive."

Wouldn't it have been easier to just kill your kid yourself instead of outsourcing it?

That's what I'd do; "Son, I gave you life, I can take it away again." He'd behave. :)

Do you honestly believe that anything that has sprung from your loins will have the slightest inclination to behave?

I knew how I was as a teenager. That is one of the many reasons why I'll never "go with" a woman.
