Media misconceptions (and babushkas)...(and strippers)

Anyone who is old enough to remember the cold war can back me up on this one. I am not pointing out some grand conspiracy but just how the media influenced my perception of Soviets. Anyone remember what the typical Soviet woman looked like? All I remember seeing was old ladies and ugly young ones with babushkas on their heads. I was blinded to the smoking hotness that is a Russian (Ukrainian, etc..) woman. This also applied to the Soviet landscapes – everything looked bland dreary in pictures – Siberia-like with lines for bread and toilet paper. I grew up in Newark, NJ and had no contact with anyone from that region so I only knew what the media fed me.

1989 – The Cold War is over and I graduate high school.

1992 – I turn 21 and I am old enough to go to strip clubs. Other than Brazillians (God bless Brazil), they are mainly filled with lovelies from behind the Iron Curtain. Apparently, the beautiful Soviet women were put away in political prisons or something like that. (I am not insinuating all are strippers - just my first encounter)

Am I the only one who thought this? (I know I am not because my friends thought the same thing) What misconceptions are being fed to me now? Do you have any similar examples of how a media bias affected your perceptions?

I was at dinner a few weeks ago with someone who said that the 1980 olympics was cancelled.

After I laughed, and she thought about it, she realized of course. But we did talk about how the perception of a lot americans is that it never 'really' happened.

Oh, how sad. So they never knew Miska. I loved that bear back then (I've been told, too young to remember)

I never saw them on the long bread and toilet paper lines we used to see in the papers. I can only hypothesize what happened to them. :)

One only needs to go to the nightclubs in Macau to see that the stereotype of butt-ugly Russian women built like tractors is a load of bull. Ukranian and Russian chicks are ultra-hot.
Great in bed too, I might add.

"eduaction"? "erned"? I think we know who needs the education. I actually visit a strip club maybe once a year and that is when I am dragged there by friends or a "business" meeting. I love my wife and I have better things to do with my money and beer doesn't taste that good when it is $6 (OK it still does). I am a perv though - you got me there.

it was partly true, but then if you read thrillers and watched James bond films then the soviets made all the good looking ones work for the KGB in honey traps but then discovered that they kept falling for the rugged, sauve and sophistaced western spies and then defecting, so they all got sent to siberia...

Who won the 100m then?

I assume, since we're discussing Winter Olympics, that you mean 100m speed-skating. If so, the answer is Eric Heiden. He won all men's speed-skating events at Lake Placid.

The reason that there are all the young women from the former soviet states in the strip clubs and working as prostitutes is that they are told by people bck home (Mafia types and other assorted sweetie pies) that they can get them a good job working in the west, so these poor girls pay up a fee to get themselves a visa/work permit or whatever, then when they get to the country in question, it turns out the wonderful job is getting your kit of for the edification of men who cant get their thrills at home, they get stuck in a cycle of misery and they are trapped, often threatened and unable to escape...
This is not always the case, many attractive young women think its a good way to get some easy quick money. But please think twice before frequenting clubs as you may be financing the virtual slavery of innocent young women.

Good point. This doesn't only apply to strippers. When Slava Fetisov (a defensive god) and Kasatonov came to play hockey for the NJ Devils. They were not allowed to fraternize with the other players. They were always escorted around by shady Russian Mafia-looking types (rumor has it they were).

The post you were responding to was talking about the Winter Olympics, as you well knew. I remember 1980 very well (born in 1967). Most Americans do not know medal winners from Moscow because the American media did not cover them. How many russians could tell you who won at Los Angeles in 1984? And your brief post did not, so far as I could tell, contain a point. And in reguards to your earlier post that we think the Moscow Olympics "never really happened", utterly ridiculous. Most Americans were very angry that we boycotted. How old was this girl you talked to? Chances are she wasn't old enough to remember 1980. I know many 18-21 year olds who had know idea what happened at Munich in '72 until the movie came out.

geeez i dont remember who won the 100M a year and a half ago. only sports nerds remember who won what in '80 (or '76 or '88). in fact i didnt off the top of my head remember where the last summer olympics were HELD.

russian women used to be "ugly" because the soviet union didnt allow western fashion into the country. they didnt promote women for their beauty. they discouraged the import and usage of makeup. so women of all ages had to wear the frumpy crap manufactured by the USSR and their friends. there were just as many beautiful soviet women, they werent promoted and packaged for our consumption as they are now.
