The Wiggles Vs. AC/DC Vs. Kylie Minogue

Sadly, this isnt about a mud wrestling match between those three. What this is about is the startling lack of Australian talents that make it big overseas.

Think about it, since Australia was founded as a nation, there have been so few musical talents that have not only made it big here but have gone on to conquer either USA or Britain (or both). We get flooded with talents (or un-talents, depending on which way you look at it) from USA. Admittedly we don't get as much from britain but I can still name a few that made it big here. We speak the same language, we are as socially "advanced" as these other countries, so why isnt our music as big?

I'm open to you're thoughts on this.

what about Olivia Newton-John? she is from there right?

she was popular for a while, she still makes CD's and someone buys them I am sure.

Oh, the Wiggles make tons of $$ but they annoy my kids, so they won't be getting any of mine.

Somewhere there is a group of 9 year old boys who were just spontaniously sent into puberty by a Kyle Minogue video. That ass..... It's hypnotic. That's not all. She's done Pauly Shore so her standards are pretty low, and despite her world class ass she benefits from an "aura of attainability." And...if you strike out with her, she's got a sister, who likely hasn't been defiled by Pauly Shore, but may suffer from the same poor judgement.

I honestly hadnt realised that Natalie actually made it big as a singer elsewhere... presumably UK yes?

And Men At Work only had one hit, and you know it. A very good song it was too, but only one. They can hardly be called a success.

Ah, that's a kiwi band. Don't let the Aussies steal yet another talented bunch of kiwis and claim them for their own. They do that all the time.

Actually, she has had more than one (though never with the same succes). But, I ask: Silverchair? Did they even have one? "Tommorrow", is that it? By any standard, Natalie has to be better known than Silverchair.

In fact, I'm not a fan of Natalie. I like her, and I think she's a good pop singer, and quite original. I tend to the like grunge and alternative, but I consider Silverchair un-talented impostors.

Also, the guy from Silverchair and Natalie are married, aren't they?

Oh, she was very big with that song in Germany too. Plus she got a deal with some cosmetics company, making her noggin turn up on billboards all over the place. I can't remember - was Torn really her only hit? Because if so, her name is surprisingly well known still. Hmm.

Off the top of my head:

Nick Cave

INXS

Crowded House

Dannii Minogue

The Dirty Three

(Wasn't the evil Peter Andre an Aussie?)

Melissa George

Isla Fisher (okay, not born in Australia)

Naomi Watts

Nicole Kidman (again, not born in Australia)

Guy Pearce (okay, another non-native)

And, though you might TRY to disclaim them, Australia also inflicted such pop sensations as Jason Donovan, Stefan Dennis, and Gillian and Gayle (Blakeney).

INXS, AC/DC, The Sherbs, Crowded House, Skyhooks. I have bought all their records at one time or another. I just think it is a lack of exposure on our side of the pond, more than anything. To make it over here for the most part, you have to go on tour, regularly. INXS and AC/DC did that. And they succeeded wildly.

Please note that I did not mention Olivia Newton John. She is an abomination.

My daughter LOVES the Wiggles. They passed through town recently and it cost nearly $200 for a family of 4 to go see it.

And I was thinkin' "Shit! The Stones weren't that much more...."

Hmmmm, did anyone remember to list the Hoodoo Gurus? Savage Garden? Mental as Anything? Little River Band?

yep, The Wiggles are expensive, my daughter has a friend who listens to them (they annoy us, but oh,well.). When my oldest was 2 we were going to see Dora Live, but it was going to cost the 3 of us something like $200 for tickets, then it was out of town so we would have to pay for transportation and lodging, and then she would want a shirt and it was getting crazy expensive, so we didn't go. She is still kinda upset about it.

We are taking her to a Trek convention this summer though, so that should make up for missing Dora right?

I avoided that problem.

I saw the ad for the wiggles. Looked into it. Had a minor coronary at the price. Thought about how much an under two year old would really get from the show: (would she even remember it in two years, could she stay in her seat area for that long, would she get bored and fussy, was it scheduled during her usual nap time, etc.) and decided that it was best just not to let her know.

If they (or Dora) come back when she's three, we'll take her. But at the 20 months old she was at the time - it just wasn't going to have been worth it.

I loved the Wiggles when I was 4 or 5, so did my brother at taht age... so theyve been around and been popular (at least in Australia) for a good 15 years, if not more. I believe they have certainly been the most successful (and are now branching out into other languages, they're making an Indian one).

And INXS does count I spose, much as I wish they didn't after that terrible tv show... blech.

And Crowded House doesn't count, they were New Zealand. Although I kinda wish they werent.

Personally, I have always thought that Australian musicians were really good, and assumed that they would have to be so in order to 'make it' way over on the other side of the world, where I live (In Canada).

I personally like the Newsboys and Michelle Tumes, although I realise that they appeal to a particular group, so maybe not everyone has heard of them.

And, who could forget Savage Garden?

I thought I heard that Powderfinger was from Australia? They are certainly famous.

Ok, ok, in the face of lots of evidence I'm forced to say that more Aussie bands make it big than I thought. Perhaps I need to spend more time overseas... not that I really want to.

I never knew Aussie tv had made it big either, although Round The Twist is certainly no surprise... man I love that show. In fact I like Australian tv in general, especially comedy stuff. It's always better than American stff, and about on par with british humour.

Hi, I'm from Sydney but have lived in USA for over 6 yrs now. While the yanks genuinely love us Aussies, the Aussie celebrities they know and love are frightening.. the crocodile hunter is about the most popular and kylie is getting up there. Scary and when you consider that the talents of Kate Ceberano, Mental as Anything, John Farnham, and many others are just not even known about, it's sad.

On the positive side, I no longer have to beg for vegemite and other aussie necessities to be mailed because there is a great store called World Market that sells an increasing amount of Aussie stuff (although my Dad still has to send a Christmas Pudding each year and tim tams and mint slices).

Aussie wine is very popular here.. and cheap as chips. I enjoyed a bottle of Jacob's Creek claret for $7 last night. Can't say the same for beer.. only one available is fosters (I'd kill for a VB or ANY other).

Aside from missing my friends and family and beautiful Sydney Harbour, the good ole USA is a good place to live, if you ignore the idiot in the White House but then I still think Johnny H is worse.

G'day all.:)

Dude, I love Australian musicians, and being a fellow Aussie myself I know most of em. Only I was wondering just how many ACTUALLY did make it overseas, and I'm motsly interested in USA, GB doesn't seem to have TOO much of a problem listening to our stuff.

More specifically musicians, there seems to be a plethora of Aussie or ex-Aussie actors out there. many of them I want to hit in the face, but you get the jist of it.
