Environmental Impact of Cows?

So, I've heard that raising cows in the numbers that we do can be harmful to the environment, and I was wondering in what ways exactly? For one, I know they produces mass amounts of methane, and I assume the sheer amount of land they use up is a part of it, but does anyone have exact figures or know where I could find information about this sort of thing?

I have tried looking for myself, but I fail at search engines and often can't get what I want from them.

And for kicks, people are free to discuss what they think of the cows, the cattle industry, and the environmental effects of cows in general.

I know that cows are bad for the environment. I'm doing my part to stop them. I eat them.

Alot of those claims are environmentalist-mumbo-jumbo. I'm with DCD, I eat as many cows as possible.

Some meat in your diet gives protein, and people have raised cows as livestock for, well a really long time, I see no problem here :/.

Cows poop a lot. A single cow produces 120 pounds of manure per day, and 30-40 times as much waste as the average human.

I heard that a Texas company was planning to use gasified cow manure to run a factory that converts plant material to ethanol.

I don't think the amount of meat the majority of North Americans consume (myself included) can be considered 'some'. :D

If God didn't want us to breathe methane, he wouldn't have made cows.
