I am going on the Orient Express to Venice for my birthday in the first week of June, we are staying in a palace for 3 nights and I have already booked a gondola (which is horribly expensive) anyone have any tips for us while we are there..you know, places to eat (cheap ones!) things to do, see etc...also if you are going somewhere else and want tips about there, put it here....then we can all be nice and offer advice and tips...well thats the theory :D

(please be gentle with me, this is my first time starting one of these....)

is no one going on holiday ANYWHERE? at all? is it just me? all alone in the airport....standing in the terminal looking bewildered at the huge area with noone in it?

*paranoia seeps in...or is it that no one wants to tell me their secrets? YOU all know the great places to eat in Venice but no one wants to share it with me....because you all hate me......:(

Never been outside the USofA.

but what is universal is this.

to find the gems, the hidden treasures of eating as well as stores, ask the locals.

That is, if you're in a country that's friendly to the English speaking countries.

Ahhh Venice! I liked the place.

It's tiny! Don't be afraid to walk around.

There are guys that will give you a ticket for a water taxi to see the glass blowing shops over on Murano. They hope of course you will buy something. Can get rather expensive. Found a nice tiny bottle for my wife, it's unique and she loves it.

I wish I can remember the name but you can find it in the travel books. There is a small pensione with a restaurant under it. I mean it is really small only has like 3 rooms. Presidents stay there and you can see who as they have pictures. It's a great place. Run by a little old lady with an attitude! You don't mess with her! :D

The restaurant is well known to the locals and it they don't advertise. Really good.

There is the Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, Piazza San Marco and the Duomo. All worth a look.

You can also pick up a venician mask. Can be costly but if you like that sort of thing, it's nice to have. My wife has a nice one......

It should be fun. I loved it there.....

Thank you...I was hoping to go to Murano and I expect it to be expensive, but are we talking European expensive or US expensive? I know that when we did the tourist thing and went up to London for a long weeekend we spent over £900 without the travel, hotel, breakfast and show tickets....in the theatre a small bottle of coke cost £2.50...

Talking of which, if you like Queen...or even if you dont...go and see 'We Will Rock You' at the Dominion Theatre, its awesome!
