Careers, School, Degrees....

Pretty simple:

If you are in school: what career field are you going into once you graduate?

If you are out of school: what do you do or plan to do professionally?

Anyone thinking of making a career change? Change in your Major?

Bonus Question:

If you had infinite wealth, would you still attend school? Assuming that any course of study would be say ''for fun", things you'd just like to learn about without having to be arsed with getting a job and paying bills.... what would you study?

I'm in my last year of a bachelor of arts degree, and upon looking at what jobs are available for a politics major, i've resigned myself to earning $30,000 in a cruddy bureaucrat job for the rest of my life, considering that I am 1% below the average mark required to do an honours year/PhD and i'm not positive i'll be able to boost that much.

Such is life, I guess.

As for the bonus question - yeah, i'd probably study music.

History major, I'm going to be a teacher.

Anyone thinking of making a career change? Change in your Major?

Thought about it, but I'm a senior, kinda late in the game to do that.

Yea, I would study communications and history. I would still do stuff to keep myself active, probably have a small business, do my radio talk show. Maybe open up my own radio station etc.

If you are out of school: what do you do or plan to do professionally?

I manage a Sam's club, and I am a Wine consultant. I do not use my degree at all. I have a master's in History, and plan to eventually go back and finish my Dr just so I can be the nasty professor at some university that everyone hopes they don't get. But that's only AFTER I make some real money somewhere. Teachers don't make squat. Even university professors.

If you had infinite wealth, would you still attend school? Assuming that any course of study would be say ''for fun", things you'd just like to learn about without having to be arsed with getting a job and paying bills.... what would you study?

If I had infinite wealth, all I would do (when I'm not traveling the world) would be go to school. I would major in everything. I would try to die with the longest string of letters after my name, ever. My tombstone would be thirty feet high and completely covered with letters.

Most certainly. I'd probably study subjects such as philosophy, sociology, history etc. Just about anything that caught my interest.

I'm in Polytechnic (or University of Applied Science) in school of culture, degree in media design (haven't done any courses for over a year now, but I'm still a student...) and I work in a media company. I have no plans to make a career change but I'm trying to find a more demanding job. This is getting boring.

If I'd be rich I'd definitely keep studying. About 1/3 of my studies have been "for fun". I love to attend cinema courses. I'd also study languages, art history, computer games (yes, we have had few game courses in multimedia studies, funfunfun)
the list would go on and on. Everything related to culture.

I have a BA in Film & Digital Media and a graduate degree in Playwrighting. I now work as a freelance crew person for film and television. I didn't need the degrees to do the job I do now. It was a little easier to get started, but really the degrees where just for me.

I intend to become a journalist as soon as I break out of this 4 year prison, cover government and shit, and then progress into a tangles web of lies, sex, corruption, and shattered dreams as I fight to save, no just my career, but my life.

And I am vaguely considering changing my major. The idea of shifting my focus from print journalism to a Film & Digital Media degree is appealing, and calls upon that part of me that wants to produce an epic trilogy about how the world is destroyed by giant squid. Yes, I really have written a plot outline and parts of a script for such a trilogy.

And if I had infinite wealth, I'd stay in college. I'd pursue English and Math until I had every possible variant of every possible accredation for either subject. I will be t3h ub3rc0mmun1c4t0r, and I would still use 1337 on occassion just to piss off my less ub3r colleagues.

Well I've been out of school for a short while... 26 or so years I think. I've held a few jobs, in different fields. I've literally been a butcher, a baker and a cabinetmaker to name only a few.

I currently work as a hospital engineer.

I like this job.

I think I'll keep it...

im still in school, will have finished by november when the HSC is over.
BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MY LIFE!!

im studying chemistry, physics, maths extension 1 and 2, studies of religion, and advanced english.
the closest thing to a career path i have considered is physics research. but how many jobs like that are out there anyway?
getting a stable job is very tempting...but the stuff im interested in, i dont exactly want to teach.

staying in uni, doing course after course until i feel ready to get into the real world seems like my best bet. and like loads of fun.

Neuroendocrinology! I'm in medical school right now, I'll graduate this March.

If you are out of school: what do you do or plan to do professionally? WHEN I'm out of school, I'll still have my residency to complete....

At the mo I'm doing a 4 year Geology degree (in year 1). After that, if I can still look at a rock without wincing, I'll probably go for a Phd. After that? Well I thought about aid work or something, but on the more activist side of things (ie bitching to governments about how they are all assholes). Apart from that, my grand plan is to go to Mars as a geologist, and lead a revolution. I'm serious, too.:)

EDIT: Damn, the infinite wealth bit: Mars again.

I am a professional stage manager, and have made theatre my career since before I got out of college.

Nope. I love what I do. The pay is... minimal... the hours... very long... but I don't want to do anything else.

I am planning one of these days, to see if I can't find a basic layman's course on quantum physics, or possibly audit a basic course just to attend the lectures and make friends with the professor so I could ask a LOT of questions (the whole business about one thing being in two places at the same time fascinates me, but I think the math involved might make it more than I could handle... math is not my strong suit). I also would like to take some more art courses, and, if I had the time and the money, I would get a medical degree in some surgical field (neurosurgery possibly). I don't think I would give up my career to practice, but I find medical science fascinating.

Language and Literature major at University of Texas at Tyler. I'll probably end up teaching here once I graduate. Not that I like it that much, it's just that rent is cheap and I don't want to pack my crap and move. I kind of want to be the crazy professor that lives in student housing. Besides, there's no real job I can get with an English degree other than teaching, so I figure the least I can do is become a professor.

Third Year Business Management and Economics Dual Degree at UQ.

My plan would be to do some sort of postgrad thing (probably in Econ, but I don't know yet), then get a job at some sort of econ department for a large company and use my management skills to work myself up the ladder, and an MBA would be on the cards during that time as well.

Eventually, once I've gotten lots of expertise, starting my own company might be a good idea, although since my preferred industry would be the automobile industry, that may be difficult without some background in engineering.

At any rate, I really, really need to be rich. So that's all I work towards, as shallow as that might sound.

Answer to quesiton 1, I am mojoring in political science, and I plan to work for the FBI, CIA, DIA, NSA, or (Insert three letter government acronym here).

I have already been offered and I am considering taking a job training Inntelligence Analysts at Ft. Huachuca for the US Army. It pays great considering I have yet to complete my college education ($60k a year) and I have always wanted the oppritunity to groom the minds of the next generation of analysts.

If I had infinate money it would not change my mind at all. I like this kind of work.

Currently teaching English as a Forgien Language. Planning on going back for my PhD after JET is over and either working in public school teaching English, or at the college level teaching future teachers how to teach.

Or I may just follow the advice of an old friend and go into Ed Leadership, but she mainly wants me to do that so I can take over her job. ;)

Hoping to study Pyschology, Maths, Government & Politics, and English Lit at A-Level (perhaps with an AS in Health and Social Care).

If I go to my second choice college* I'll be studying Psychology, English Lit, Government & Politics at A-Level, and then some mixture of Use of Maths, Sociology and Health & Social Care.

After a gap year, I want to then go to Uni and study Psychology and get an undergraduates degree, then become fully qualified to either be a Counselling or Clinical Psychologist (though most areas of Psychology sound interesting), perhaps up to PhD level... *daydreams*

So, my main career plan is to be a Psychologist of some sort, though I'd also love to work with children at some point, maybe get into education at some point, and I'd also like to do managerial stuff (perhaps if I work up in Psychology from a more client-based job).

If I had infinite wealth, I'd probably study the same thing. Or I might study to become a counsellor or therapist because then I could offer those services for free. Without infinite wealth, it can be hard to live on the wages of a counsellor apparantly. Plus, I couldn't work privately**.
I'd probably be more relaxed about studying, do evening classes or some less life-consuming structure of study.

*I'm using college in the English terms - similar to the last two years of US High School

**I'll work for the NHS as a Psychologist

If you are out of school: what do you do or plan to do professionally?
I am doing tax and financial planning, I don't know that I actually planned to do it, but the opportunity to get trained to do it kinda fell in my lap 3 days after my husband got laid off, so I assumed that was what God wanted me to do, I don't think he wants me to do it for much longer because other opportunities are falling into place lately, I don't much like them, but I didn't much like doing taxes when I started out either.

Anyone thinking of making a career change?
I think things are going so smooth right now for a change-over that I probably will, although there are other things that I would want to do, things that seem more fun, more usefull, more stable, but yeah.

If you had infinite wealth, would you still attend school?
It depends on how school or work would fit in to my life if I still went, I don't work about 6 months of the year now, just because it doesn't fit in where I want it to. My husband is in school right now, he will be done in about 1 1/2 years, it will be my turn to go at that point, if I can get my stuff together and pay off his student loan, and figure out what I want to do, and then find classes that don't mess with my kids' schedule too much, then I might go.

Assuming that any course of study would be say ''for fun", things you'd just like to learn about without having to be arsed with getting a job and paying bills.... what would you study?
I don't know, there are a lot of things that I have wanted to be over the years, from age 2 I have wanted to be a meteorologist, from 6 a forensic pathologist, from 9 an historian, from 12 a clown, from 19 a psychologist. I think I would study it all, and have a bunch of fun annoying my family with my new found knowledge.

I graduated in June 2005 with a BA in international relations and minor in French. Right now I'm working, but intend to go to law school and am interested in international law. On the other hand, life in the foreign service ain't so bad, and I've been playing with the idea of working for the State Department.

Change in major? Hahaha, I changed majors a lot when I was in college. Some highlights: physics, math, French, economics, electrical engineering, political science, international relations.

Are you kidding? Not have to work, but still be able to take courses on and learn about anything that struck my fancy? I would absolutely still attend school if I had infinite wealth!

I've got a BSc (Hons) in Criminology and Criminal Justice (2:1), and am now studying an MSSc in Criminology (I was planning on doing a PhD ((had even started a bit of the research)), but it's not happening for the meantime, mainly due to my inability to finance it; the Masters course wasn't cheap, but much more so than the doctorate would have been).

As part of the Masters course, I'm studying management of criminal justice agencies, primarily those based in Northern Ireland. I'd like to pursue a career in that area, but have also done quite a bit of statistical research in criminology, so have recently applied for jobs in crime and social science analysis. Statistics was the only branch of Maths that I enjoyed at school ;)

If I had infinite wealth, I suspect I'd do nothing but study. Well, OK, there may get a point where I'd get fed up doing it, but then I'd still attempt to get a job in the field. I'd be horrendously bored doing nothing all the time and letting my mind atrophy.

3. If you had infinite wealth, would you still attend school? Assuming that any course of study would be say ''for fun", things you'd just like to learn about without having to be arsed with getting a job and paying bills.... what would you study?
1. I got my undergrad degree(s) in 1965 and my master's degree in 1979, so yeah ... I guess you could say I'm out of school. At first I planned to practice law as a way of getting into politics, but I hated law school so much that I dropped out to go to Vietnam! Heh! After I got married, I was hired by General Electric Corp. into their Employee Relations Management Program. I decided I liked it quite a bit, so I got my Master's degree in Industrial Relations with a secondary concentration in Organizational Development.

I hope to start working again on my Ph.D. soon ( maybe later this year ), which will be in psychology with a primary emphasis in counseling. I discovered I enjoyed counseling and was pretty decent at it a few years ago when I was mediating/arbitrating various sorts of disputes.

2. Not really, unless you don't consider employee relations and counseling at all related.

3. Hmm. Well, I don't HAVE to get another degree, and I'm planning on getting one because I want to. Between my military disability/retirement and social security, I'll soon be debt-free, hopefully by this coming September. I'll probably have to pay for my Ph.D. program out of that, but I hope to stick around long enough to at least recoup my losses. :)

BA in Psychology.

Working as a home loan consultant (any loan questions - feel free to tg me) for the past 5 years. Sales is the place to be becuase you basically determine your own income. If I work to bring in the loans, I will make money. If I sit back and wait for it to come to me, I don't (sometimes). The mortgage business was the easiest buisiness to be in a couple of years ago. I would hate to start in the mortgage business right now as the inventory of loans has depleted.

I am considering writing loans part time and staying home with my children.

Just finished High school a couple weeks ago, and right now the only sure thing I can say about my career or future is that the next couple years will be spent travelling. Careerwise, I'm a bit nervous, because not knowing what you're going to do is not a nice feeling. About the infinite money, as seems to be unanimous, I'd study everything under the sun. None. Just plan on hanging out, making some money, travel, that kind of thing. When I feel like it I'll go back to school (I'm just about done 12 years of it, I need a break) and do something. Not to sure what (don't really want to limit myself) maybe journalism (war reporter would be kinda cool).

Bonus Question:

Yea I guess, wouldn't take it to seriously though. With infinite wealth it's not like your education really matters to much. You can just pay people to think for you. I'd learn, but not in the conventional-go-to-school sense. More likely I'd travel and take in what happens to interest me at the moment.

The problem with paying people to think for you is, you might not be intelligent enough to know if they were screwing with you or not.;) I think having the opportunity to study abroad without worry of bills and whatnot, would be the ultimate experience. I'm in 11th grade right now, and, after attending University, I'd love to be a writer/actress/opera singer/politician. (All at once, of course). But my portfolio advisor has told me that that is completely unrealistic and that I need to pick a real job, like one in the trades. So I guess maybe a newspaper editor or something.

And yes, if I had infinite wealth, I would study just about everything possible at University. And go to a real music conservatory to study singing.

I'd also like to get involved in maybe women's, refugee or Indigenous health in some way (preferably in some way with a revolutionary spirit!), to make a positive contribution to society and to put my Arts degree to good use. :) I'm also interested in doing postgrad Arts study- if I have time!

If you had infinite wealth, would you still attend school? Assuming that any course of study would be say ''for fun", things you'd just like to learn about without having to be arsed with getting a job and paying bills.... what would you study?
Palentology...definately go on dinosaur digs. or a palenobotanist....one of the two. Maybe I can with the three Powerball tickets in my pocket. Who knows, I may get lucky tomorrow night!

Hopefully going into medicine (via medical school)

Currently in Colchester Royal Grammar School Sixth form, studying (well, attending and every so often working) to attend one of Oxford, Cambridge or Durham and therein read English Literature or Renaissance history.

I then intend to take a conversion course, for the duration of one year, for corporate law, and accordingly become a corporate lawyer.

Out of school. a couple of degrees. working as an overpaid useless entity...errr... I mean "consultant".

Would I go back to school if I had infinite wealth? No. Don't be silly.

School would come back to me!

I would take courses - mostly in the form of personal instruction - on things and hobbies that interest me. Keeping a school schedule? Having to accept whatever crap teacher they've decided to present a course? Why would you do it that way if you really were wealthy? When instead you could hire the best to teach you on YOUR time?

If you are in school: what career field are you going into once you graduate?

I'm doing a Master's degree in Political Science, and I already have a BA.HON in Political Science and Psychology, so I hope to get in any field where I can be involved in research or policy development related to individual or public health.

I would attend school and study just about everything I felt like studying, eventually toward getting a PhD in something so I can teach something and constantly be exposed to students who are themselves learning, and through whom I would continue to learn.

I'm in my second year of a BA in Music and Recording. I've got a few ideas about what to do afterwards including sound design, arranging/composition (for tv, radio, films, whatever) and teaching (either in a school or private instrumental lessons. Or both).

And if I had infinite wealth I'd still learn Music and Languages for fun. And maybe Physics.

Currently at BU studying English secondary education. I'll be teaching high school brats. w00t! And I'm actually only that in practice. I'm still working on getting into the School of Education. Currently, I'm (by name) in SHA, the School of Hospitality Administration

If I had infinite wealth, I would definatly be going to some kind of classes. I am one of those kids who actually enjoys learning.

I've been a teacher for five years. Spent $27,000 Canadian to get the piece of paper saying I could teach. Before that I did pretty much every minimum wage job under the sun. It's been six whole years since I've studied at University, and I guess I miss it, because I'm waiting with baited breath to see if I've been accepted into Law School to start the new phase of my career as an educating-ass-kicking-sue-you-if-you-fuck-with-me-aboriginal-rights-bitch (all of which will only cost me $30,000. kill me now) If I was wealthy enough to not have to work, I would study. Absolutely. I'd study music for a while, then a bit of this, a bit of that...even physics. My physics skills are currently terrible, but for a while I was doing good at it, and loving it. I'd study my whole damn life, in between trips to other countries. No, that's a lie. I'd study on those trips too. I'd devote myself in my spare time (hey, if you're that rich, it's ALL spare time) to developing Cree resources, including television shows in Cree, Cree board games, Cree books, Cree music, Cree language everything.

I would love to be able to study physical anthropology. There is something about the differences in the human structure that have evolved since our early ancestors that totally fascinate me.
There's also astronomy which I have loved since I was about 8 years old.
I wish I could study whatever I wanted, whatever met my fancy at the time. I just too damn curious about so many things.
(Right now I'm on disability due to heart problems. The funny thing is is that I CANNOT go to school to learn anything or else I lose my disability payments. It shows that I am capable of working even though my job was alot more stressful than going to school! Go figure, the rules were made up by those who have their degrees!)

I hate that education is so expensive. (40,000 a year) but tis worth it. I will enjoy being an underpaid underappreciated high school teacher.

I'm a year away from getting my Bachelors in Political Sciences at Duke University and then I'll be going to Duke Medical to get my MD with a specialization in Neurology and Neurosciences.

I finished my IB diploma last year and am now studying biology for my bachelor course, and plan to do Animal Biology for my masters
I did the IB program also, and got an advanced diploma ontop of the IB Diploma. That's why I like Theory of Knowledge so much, because of that oh so fun program.

I'd still study. I'm not going into my chosen profession for the paycheck or because I have to, I'm going into it because I truly love the subject. I could be the richest man in the world and I'd still study, and work in the field of Neurology.

I'm currently in my first year taking a degree in History with Philosophy at Sheffield Uni, but i'm dropping History next year.

I've got no idea what my career field will be and I don't really care all too much. Work is only something to allow you time for yourself as far as i'm concerned - as long as it pays enough to live fairly comfortably, i'll be happy. My brother is the same - he has a degree in law but isn't becoming a lawyer because it would be too stressful.

I'd certainly get an education if I had unlimited money - education is a good thing in itself, not a means to an end. I'd really love to spend my whole life at university, although studying at a more relaxed pace - with frequent trips to other countries with said money ^^

Toss up at this point. Went back to school as an English major, but may switch to Philosophy because, well, it's neat stuff.

If you are out of school: what do you do or plan to do professionally?

I have a degree in Music Composition already. I don't plan on doing anything, really. I teach music, but I'm disenchanted with it.

If you had infinite wealth, would you still attend school?

Yes. I would. I would study everything. Everything.

BA-Journalism, UW-Madison 1998

MBA, Belmont Univ. 2003

I'd really like to be on stage singing/playing my songs, but those dreams are being kept on the side as I work to pay bills and remain financially solvent.

I'd like to be managing a business or helping to manage a corporation, but that's not quite been achieved yet. One day I might like to start my own music publishing company... really put that MBA degree to work.

If I get bored and want to torture myself for a few years, i'll go after an MS-Sociology (loved my Soc classes at UW) or a JD (juris doctor).

I'm in my first year of college in the UK, so another year and a half before university, hopefully. I'll be applying for Durham, York, Warwick, Leeds, Bristol, and one more. :) I'm thinking of probably taking a Mathematics degree, coupled with Economics for the first year, I like that kind of stuff.

And also, if anybody lives in the UK, preferably the north, I -highly- recommend Durham, it's an amazing place. You just...have to be there to believe it, it's so nice there. :)

I'm planning to become a physicist. With infinite money, my career would not be that much different. See, I'd spend my money on funding my research, building particle accelerators, that sort of thing.

Anyone thinking of making a career change? Change in your Major?

I've been a bit tempted to switch my poly-sci degree for a history degree, but I decided I was too far gone and opted to stick with the political science. My other BA in Philosophy never changed at all.

Are you kidding? I probably would never leave school. I would try to get biology, math, archaeology, history, classics, and psychology degrees on top of what I'm already getting for starters. From there. . .I'd see what interests me.

If you are out of school: what do you do or plan to do professionally?I graduated with a BA in film. I work in the industry at Technicolor. (htp://www.technicolor.com)

Anyone thinking of making a career change? Change in your Major?Yes. I am going back to school now. I just took the GRE so I can get into UCLA and ultimately get a degree in petroleum geology. I think we are heading into an energy crisis the likes of which we have never seen and I think that's a safe field to be in because petroleum geologists are going to be very necessary.

I would take classes that I am interested in and would probably be a philanthropist throwing money at energy issues, over population, conservation and efficiency and habitat preservation/restoration.
