TEHRAN (Reuters) - Not content with pelting European embassies with petrol bombs to protest against cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, Iranians have decided to rename the "Danish pastries" relished by this nation of cake lovers.

From now on, the sweet, flaky pastries which dominate the shelves in Iran's cake shops will be known as "Roses of the Prophet Mohammad," the official IRNA news agency reported as pressure on Denmark over the cartoons took on a new dimension.

The freedom fries ridiculousness is gone now, right?
At least, I haven't heard anyone call them that in a dog's age.
Who comes up with these ideas, anyway?
They fail at life, whoever they are. That's the lowest point of pettiness ever.

Funny... I always thought these were only called "Danish" in the English language. In German, their name has no reference whatsoever to Denmark, and as far as I'm aware it's the same in French.
Out of curiosity, are they called "Danish" in any other language?

There's a little deli/convenience store that I used to get lunch from sometimes that had the "French" part of french fries the menue crossed out and replaced with "Freedom".

This isn't new. During world war one, Sauerkraut was renamed 'Liberty Cabbage'. And German Shepherds were renamed here in Britain, though I can't remember what to. Probably English Sheepdogs or something similar. These things never last. Wikipedia has a few things to say on this. I think 'Liberty Measles' is the funniest, but perhaps an urban myth.

I came across this:

The French embassy made no comment, except to note that French fries come from Belgium. "We are at a very serious moment dealing with very serious issues and we are not focusing on the name you give to potatoes," said Nathalie Loisau, an embassy spokeswoman.

And this:

French kissing, French poodles, French dip sandwiches, French ticklers, French horns and American character actor French Stewart were not renamed freedom kissing, freedom poodles, freedom dip sandwiches, freedom ticklers, freedom horns, or Freedom Stewart, though some political satirists referred to them as if they had been

When I looked it up on Wikipedia. Where shall wisdom be found?

And to think, a nation with frequent protests insisting that America should be destroyed or something, turns out to be not so different from the people they apparently despise so much after all. Then again, it could just be an example of humanity's common pride when it comes to dissing other countries, I dunno.

I remember hearing some person joking that instead we should rename all fast food after the French, since they don't want to associated with it anyways.

The conclusion of a small oral essay, (this was one the radio) was that by the time we wheeled out the 'Big Jacque' they would be ready to invade anyone we told them to.

I'm not sure either. Idols have usually been a picture or a sculpture. So, possibly commercial use of his name is okie-dokie in the Iran government's book. As long as the pastry doesn't bear a resembalance to a human face and that one isn't present in front of one's rug during prayer, it seems to be fine.

Iran doesn't speak for all of Islam, after all, despite however much it may want to.

About the name being more difficult - maybe it isn't in arabic. They might have an idiom for "holy rose of mohammed", and "danish" might be three different words. Maybe. Or something. Renaming food is wrong!

Well, there is this area called "Alsace", which is sometimes German, sometimes French (and actually neither - or at least historically).

I'm not sure whether the breed actually comes from there, but considering how useful a breed they are, I guess it makes sense that the Brits would like to change their name. Sorta like with their royal family.

What I do find confusing though is why they would call the Deutsche Dogge (ie "German Mastiff") a "Great Dane".

That's right but Islam is completed by Hadices (Sing Hadiz), that are stories about the life of the prophet and so. There are a lot and diferents schools of thinking accept some of them and not others like a faith basis. Some of them are generally accepted since early islam history, in wich we can include the one that forbid any human representation as assuming the role of Allah, the only one creator.

love this quote from the article.
"No one is allowed to make fun of our beloved and respected Prophet," Hassan Nasserzadeh, a cake-shop owner in central Tehran, told Reuters.

So they can't have a picture of their prophet in any form, can't satirise or draw anything that might be construed as making fun of the Prophet...

but they can name a sweet curly pastery after him then bite into it and consume something that shares the prophet's name...

and people wonder why they make fun of them...
