Box-headed robber at large
Despite an unsophisticated disguise, a robber managed to evade police late Saturday after holding up a Medford business.
Police said the robber used a cardboard box with a hole cut in one side to cover his head. Claiming he had a gun, the man stole cash and a carton of cigarettes from Purple Parrot, 940 Biddle Road, at 10:39 p.m. Police officers with a dog could not track the suspect, who fled out the store’s back door with a bag of money.
The robbery suspect is described as slender white man, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall. In addition to the cardboard box, a dark scarf covered the man’s face, the store clerk told police. The suspect also was wearing a green shirt and possibly brown pants, police said.
Saturday’s robbery was the second at a Purple Parrot this year. A man wearing a black ski mask reportedly robbed the store at 2000 Biddle Road on Jan. 24.
Purple Parrots offer deli food, beer and wine and video gaming.
Last year, police reported 51 robberies citywide, 34 percent more than in 2004. Purple Parrots were targeted numerous times in 2005, including a Feb. 24 robbery of the store at 940 Biddle Road.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Medford Police Department’s criminal investigation section at 774-2230.
