Disbelief in God or gods doesn't make you smarter.

Saying things like "God is the easter bunny for the masses," only serves to portray you as a close minded jackass.

Thanks.

Just so long as we agree that believing in god doesn't make you enlightened.

it just voices an opinion. just like your doing. on a forum, you see, there are these things, right? these things are called "other people" and, oddly enough, these people tend to have opinions.

its odd, yes. but it cannot be changed.

*EDIT:*

well, they can be changed, but.. the fact there are people who have opinions that differ from your will never change.

damn nationstaters always being all smart and techinal and stuff.

As true as that particular little statement is, the way you're going about it is unlikely to win you any respect in return.

I was able to convince Congress to go to war.

Speaker: There is no just reason for war in Iraq.
Me: that may be so, congressman, but remember: anyone who doesnt want to go to war is gay.
Senator: I wanna go to war
Senator [2]: Me too!
Senator [3]: I was the first person who wanted to go to war!

That is debateable and depends on what you call smarter: overall smarter, or smarter on this particular issue. It does make it easier to be consistent however.
Note: I said debateable in the first sentence. I am not stating it as fact.

And what does "many religions are like fast food - quick and easy, but ultimately not sustaining" make me ?

Personally I prefer "Religion is the opiate of the masses."

But I do honestly understand that it isn't necessarily a matter of intellect. From an athiest's point of view it is, however, a matter of rationality. And from a point of view disconnected from religion, it's hard to respect smart people who believe in such silly things. I mean, if you take a step back from whatever religious beliefs you hold, can't you see that they might seem a little silly to someone who doesn't hold them in the light of Truth?

I would say that:

Perhaps disbelieving religion does not make you smarter. Certainly believing in it does not.

It is not so much an issue of intellegence as an issue of trust. Do you trust a certain book, or story, or other thing (depending on your religion). It cannot be disproved (and probably will never be proven (either because there is no god, or because He is, in His usual way, to busy to show Himself)), and must therefore be taken on trust. Intellegence does not enter into it.

Myself? I think it's a bit of a waste of time.

*dodges lightning bolt:p *

Edit: Warlorn made my point for me while I was posting.

A lot of people don't know what an opiate is, though. This one guy thought it was a kind of socket wrench, and some other woman thought it was something you put in cereal to make it crunchier.

An opiate is a small furry animal found in Texas. It sits in trees until somebody walks under their branch and then it drops down onto their head and drills into their skull with razor sharp fangs so it can implant its child in its victims head. When the baby opiate is old enough it scuttles down its host's trachea before bursting out of their stomach in slow motion while sci-fi music plays in the background.

I always felt that it was one of Marx's most expressive metaphors.

So good to get a thread that holds an good statement.
As an unbeliever, I agree totaly with point 1 and almost with point 2.
So hard to to figure exactly what you're saying there as it can be taken a few ways but however one reads it, it should .....hey, I read it with an open mind! Good stuff Daft.
Thanks Uumpapamowmow.
