they're on welfare, protesting President Bush because he's not enough of a socialist for their tastes...

I guess it depends on the type of protestor.

Most protesters tend to be college students. They don't have jobs, they just skip school.

would explain it,
seeing how college students are not quite done with their education, so they are still a little slow

So 'cause they're protesting about something they must also be sponging off the State?

Depending on the protest, I would think most have jobs. The antiwar protests in London attracted over a million people, but at the time only two million people were unemployed (with half a million claiming benefit), and I wouldn't expect half of that demographic to have made their way to London. On the other hand, if the protest is about Government plans to cut Disability Benefit (which also happened in London recently) then I expect most of them don't have jobs and are on benefits.

I'm sure some of them work at the organic grocery store or the local upscale coffee shop.

all of the "protesters" I know don't have jobs, they live off thier parents, and go to college when they aren't so high that they forget about class, but I only know about 5 so I doubt it's a good cross-section.

I have been called an "activist" but I do my stuff on my free time either really late at night through email or write letters on weekends. ;)

I do.

Most of the people I've known that were protestors did have jobs.

Indeed, most of the student protestors I've known, had education AND jobs to juggle...

Let's see.

Me? Yup, I have a job.

My mother. Again, employed.

Brother? Yup.

Dad? yes.

Neighbour? Again, employed.

Does fulltime home-maker and parent count as a job? I'll say yes, because of the amount of work involved, though you don't get paid, or get any days off.

So that means my spouse and my neighbour's spouse also have jobs.

You know, come to think of it, every person I've attended a protest with in the last while had a job.

Some were college students, who worked and went to school.

Sure. How else would I find the time to post here? I'm certainly not going to spend my free time on an internet forum.

Wow, what an awesome and insightful question. It's good to know there are such level headed people out there willing to fight the good fight - without raising a single placard.

I think it depends on the time of year. During the winter, I'm guessing it's mostly professionals doing the protesting (it's cold, damn it) and during the summer it's mostly ordinary people protesting.

I honestly think that many people who have been protesting lately do not have jobs. (In some cases i don't think they have an education either.)

But it depends on the protest.

I have occasionally joined protests - either as a university student or as an employed person (both while I was in health care, and more recently as a part of the high tech sector). I also write angry emails to MLAs and MPs.

We have the responsibility to speak out if a government, business, or individual is doing something wrong.

I'll bet that a number of you who would otherwise denigrate protestors still think that sometimes it's necessary to write letters to the editor and to your government representatives when you think people in power are going to do or have done something inappropriate.

As an American I make a point to be totally and completely ignorant about anything political. Being completely apolitical to the point where you don't vote, don't even know who your elected representatives are, or the government positions they hold is a fine American virtue. I'm proud to maintain this fine American tradition of ignorance and apathy.
