I love Zep, but when it comes down to it I have to choose Hendrix. He was awesome in his own playing, and he was awesome in the way he virtually created a whole new way to think about guitar-playing. A lot of the things we expect from guitarists now, started with Hendrix.
And for many of us fortunate enough to have seen him play, it was a high point in life. Before Hendrix, I saw people play guitar. Some of them were amazing. But when I saw Hendrix play, it was so organic it felt like no one ever had played a guitar until that moment.
Having said that, I've got most of Zep's stuff and there are a lot of other guitarists I like: blues, rock, jazz, fusion and classical. I think I'm not the only one to note the "unfairness" of comparisons like this one.
But IMO, if you insist on making us choose, Hendrix was in another class altogether.

i can totally relate to that. never saw him play myself (born a couple of decades too late  ) but its the way he plays... other guitarists simply 'play' the instrument... with hendrix its almost like his guitar is just an extention of himself. kinda like how great singers are just born that way and have this amazing power of their voice, hendrix was like that with his guitar (and everyone else is just trying to sing). i mean, even potentially more technically proficient players like satch don't sound as good as hendrix to me simply because they are playing an instrument whereas hendrix and his guitar were just... one thing.
its hard to describe, but no great guitarist comes remotely close to hendrix in my estimation (mostly) as a result of this
take hendrix's version of Red House, for example. that (whichever version you hear - i heard a new one on a DVD i hadn't seen yesterday as it happens) is a simply incredible, complete piece of music. now listen to, say, G3 (satch, vai, and johnson) doing the same song and its just... too clinical. its not the same. maybe its just style or sound but hendrix has that extra something that just makes it great. same with clapton's cover of the song. same with other songs like Hendrix's Johnny B Goode, or comparing other people's covers of Little Wing against the original. nothing stacks up against the man.
not even the greatness that is zeppelin.
[/rant]
edit: though a lot of my love of hendrix is based on getting my hand on approx 4 hours worth of his live recordings... album stuff is great, but live knocks your socks off!

Christ, thats a tough choice.
While Jimi is a better guitar player that Page will ever be, he isnt the singer that Plant is/was.
However as bad ass as Jimi's rythmn section was...they arent Bohnam and Jones.
So, for me, I would say Zep, simply becuase they had a longer career, and more music to choose from.
Hendrix was, and still is the absolute best guitar player ever, and I really enjoy his stuff, but I find myself listening to Zep more often, becuase they have more of a selection to choose from.
Ironically, as I found this poll, Im listening to Led Zeppelin III.
Who is Jimi Hendrix?? *runs for cover* Zep vs Hendrix? I wanna a time machine so I can bring the two together. What a gig that would be.

And you're right about Red House. It's under-rated by a lot of people, but Hendrix playing that song is remarkable. And his Voodoo Chile (slight return) ...! It still leaves me speechless. I can't even tell you what I feel when I hear his Star Spangled Banner.

Sweet. He died the year I was born so I definitely had no chance to see him.
The closest I've come to seeing Zep was the Black Crowes/Jimmy Page Tour. What an awesome show - they did all Zep tunes. No one today comes close to Hendrix unfortuantely.

Their first LP All Skrewed Up is a pretty darn good piece of mod-influenced early street punk, and pre-dates their white power days (in fact all but the singer left the band shortly after its release). As such it is generally acceptable listening - just so long as no money goes to the band as a result.

It suddenly occurred to me as I'm sitting here listening through my Hendrix collection for the nth time just how much of an influence on Led Zep he must have been. That's not to say Page isn't a great guitarist or that his work is just derivative, but just look at the time-line.
it's really hard to think that anybody was left unchanged and uninfluenced from the first time they heard Hendrix. When I listen to Zep, it's not that I hear mere copies of Hendrix, but there's a way of thinking about guitar playing that Jimi created and that finds its way everywhere. Of course now everybody takes it for granted, but they didn't even know what it was until they heard him doing it. Hendrix invented something new, and gave it to the world of guitarists.
And even though Hendrix wasn't really known till Chas Chandler found him in the Village and brought him to the UK and publicized him (1966), he was already developing his music in the States for a few years before that. And here's the relevant time-line:
Starting in 1966, Hendrix had performed live in England, and Paris, done TV and radio in the UK on both the BBC and ITV, toured the USA including the gig at Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and appeared at a Christmas Pop Spectacular in London in 1967 along with The Who, Eric Burdon and the Animals, and Pink Floyd among others, and a load of other performances as he became more and more famous. In October of 1968, Jimi was lighting up audiences at the Winterland gig in San Francisco! :D Thanks, Jimi.
By the time Zep are recording their first album in 1968 (October), Hendrix and The Experience had done the albums Are You Experienced? (1967), Axis: Bold As Love (1967) and Electric Ladyland (1968 -- August IIRC).
And as we all know, by the time Zep were releasing their third album in 1970, Jimi was gone.
