The top "anti-Valentine's" songs

Valentine's Day. A day that's usually devoted to candy hearts, sappy cards, and expensive restaurant bills for you and your sweetie. For the single population, all that's complete rubbish. Whether you've "never been kissed" or you've loved and lost, Valentine's Day is often a day of angst for those who are not in a romantic relationship.

We all know about love songs and couples' songs for romance or what have you. This thread isn't about that. This thread's about those whose loves have gone like clouds in their coffee and are crying in their beers about it or who're angry about it and want revenge. Here's a list of my top anti-Valentine's songs or "un-Valentine's songs."

1. Love Stinks, J. Geils Band. Almost always comes up for those who are familiar with the 1980s. Just a fun, catchy if slow little number for those for whom "love stinks" isn't just a song title.

2. Go Your Own Way, Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks "told off" Lindsey Buckingham with a gentle "Dreams." Lindsey fired back with this angry little rock song that closes out Fleetwood Mac shows and has for years.

3. Get Over It, The Eagles. Not exactly related to a break up, per se, but the subject matter is just vague enough that it could work. Plus, it's one of the Eagles' angriest numbers ever.

4. The Bitch is Back, Elton John. Some may say "I'm Still Standing" is more appropriate, but any song with "Bitch" in the title needs instant recognition.

5. Bitch, The Rolling Stones. Enough said.

6. Evil Woman, Electric Light Orchestra. This is one of those where you'd have to pay attention to the lyrics, but the title is enough to merit inclusion on any list/

7. American Woman, The Guess Who. The first verse immediately qualifies this song as a break up-type song. Though it may not if you're dating a woman who's not an American. Then you'd have to be creative.

8. Everything About You, Ugly Kid Joe. This song pulls no punches whatsoever. Instant classic.

9. I Saw Her Again, The Mamas and the Papas. While "Everything About You" is blatant, this one hides somewhat in sunny melodies and pleasant-sounding music, but don't be mistaken. This song is clearly about the near-end of a relationship.

10. Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves, The Eurythmics featuring Aretha Franklin. Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin sing a song that's about female empowerment, but that could be used for the women to tell their man (or their woman) that he or she isn't welcome.

11. Riding to Vanity Fair, Paul McCartney. This one wins the "huh?" award for the most obscure song on my list. Okay, maybe it doesn't, but it certainly isn't well known. Then again, Paul McCartney writing an angry song doesn't exactly compute for most people. One listen to his delivery and you can hear him seethe.

12. She Hates Me, Puddle of Mudd. Almost emo in its intense, burning hatred of the subject of the song. It's another pull-no-punches, zero-subtlety number.

13. Numb, Linkin Park. This may or may not be directed at a love interest and it almost didn't get thought of for this list, but if a would-be former partner is controlling enough, it can definitely fit.

14. I Will Survive, Gloria Gaynor. The most cliched song on this list, but I'd have to revoke my gay card if I didn't mention it. For the guys, Cake also does this song, albeit in slowed down mode and more profanely than Gaynor does. And for those who don't speak English, Célia Crúz sings this in Spanish as "You Viviré."

15. Fall From Grace, Stevie Nicks. I had to do it. Anyone who knows me knows I have to include a Stevie Nicks song or there's something wrong with me. This song just burns with anger laced over a blistering guitar that's been described as "punk rock speed."

HONOURABLE MENTION
16. Long Way To Go, Stevie Nicks. Another Stevie Nicks tune that gets out its anger over blistering guitar, this song's feat is telling someone to f*ck off without coming close to profanity. To wit: "Have fun, tell the world" predates the irony of Green Day's "Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance)."

Songs about heartbreak aren't what I would call "anti-valentine's" - they are only "anti-valentines unless you are in a relationship". A real anti-valentine's song would speak out against conforming to the behaviour prescribed by society for the fourteenth of february.

Baby Bitch by Ween

It’s been a while since I’ve seen you smile
But now you’ve come back again
Came into the room and you saw my girl
And you asked her how long it’s been
A year she said and you shook your head
Said I’m surprised it’s gone on that long

Baby, baby, baby bitch
For words I am at a loss
Baby, baby, baby bitch
I’m better now please fuck off

What else you gonna say when while you’re back on your stay
Maybe something, maybe nothing, we’ll see
It’s just too bad, you’re beautiful I guess
I wasn’t for you and you weren’t for me

Baby, baby, baby bitch
Please slip back into yourself
Baby, baby, baby bitch
Go conquer someone else

People say, how beautiful, how sweet, how kind
You’re perfect, you’ve got nothing to hide
But i, for one, have seen the sun
And the bitch that you’ve locked up inside

Got fat, got angry, started hating myself
Wrote birthday boy for you babe
Now I’m skinny and sick and paranoid
Without a cent to my name

Baby, baby, baby bitch
Fuck you, you stinkin’ ass ho
Most beauty I’ve seen
You come from a dream
But I can’t close my eyes anymore
No, I can’t close my eyes anymore

A real anti-valentine's song would speak out against conforming to the behaviour prescribed by society for the fourteenth of february. That's slightly different from what I proposed, though I also suggested the title "un-Valentine's."

I think tell off songs count as "anti-Valentine's." Especially some of the ones mentioned here.

I like this one.

SMASHING PUMPKINS - Bodies Lyrics

Cast the pearls aside, of a simple life of need
Come into my life forever
The crumbled cities stand as known
Of the sights you have been shown
Of the hurt you call your own
Love is suicide, love is suicide

The empty bodies stand at rest
Casualties of their own flesh
Afflicted by their dispossession
But no bodies ever knew
Nobodies
No bodies felt like you
Nobodies
Love is suicide, love is suicide

Now we drive the night, to the ironies of peace
You can't help deny forever
The tragedies reside in you
The secret sights hide in you
The lonely nights divide you in two
All my blisters now revealed
In the darkness of my dreams
In the spaces in between us
But no bodies ever knew
Nobodies
No bodies felt like you
Nobodies
Love is suicide, love is suicide

How about L7 "Shitlist"? Not much to do with love but it will make you smile if you hate Valentines day.

Yeah, good one.

Love Hurts
Nazareth

Love hurts, Love scars, Love wounds and mars
Any heart not tough or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud, it holds a lot of rain
Love hurts, Ooo-oo Love hurts

I'm young, I know, But even so
I know a thing or two - I learned from you
I really learned a lot, really learned a lot
Love is like a flame It burns you when it's hot
Love hurts, Ooo-oo Love hurts

Some fools think of happiness, blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves, I guess
They're not foolin' me
I know it isn't true I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie made to make you blue
Love hurts, Ooo-oo Love hurts

Solo

I know it isn't true I know it isn't true
Love is just a lie made to make you blue
Love hurts, Ooo-oo Love hurts
Ooo-oo, Love hurts Ooo-oo
Sums it up for me.

Thanks. *blush*. But hey, diversity is everything! Hit everyone (and hey, Blue Rodeo is cool, it's Canadian :D), and so not absolutely everyone is willing to jump off a bridge after listening to emo-esk music...shake it up! It's February 14! Everything is crazy! Rabies-like crazy. Hmm, rabies...

Well, there's nothing wrong with depressing music. It's just that most of those bands you listed are awful. No offence.

Anything by Burzum too. With his demonic voice, and the fact he is in prsion for stabbing someone like 50 times in the neck face and back. Its enough to scare a romantic off.

If ever words were spoken
Painful and untrue
I said I loved but I lied
In my life
All I wanted
Was the keeping
Of someone like you
As it turns out
Deeper within me
Love was twisted and pointed at you

Never ending pain, quickly ending life --

(Chorus)

You keep this love, thing, child, toy
You keep this love, fist, scar, break
You keep this love

I'd been the tempting one
Stole her from herself
This gift in pain
Her pain was life
And sometimes I feel so sorry
I regret this the hurting of you
But you make me so unhappy
I'd take my life and leave love with you

I'd kill myself for you, I'd kill you for myself --

(Chorus)

No more head trips

It's an oldie, but a goodie... The Masochism Tango by Tom Lehrer

I ache for the touch of your lips, Dear,
But much more for the touch of your whips, Dear.
You can raise welts
Like nobody else,
As we dance to the Masochism Tango.

Let our love be a flame, not an ember,
Say it's me that you want to dismember.
Blacken my eye,
Set fire to my tie,
As we dance to the Masochism Tango.

At your command
Before you here I stand,
My heart is in my hand. Ecch!
It's here that I must be.
My heart entreats,
Just hear those savage beats,
And go put on your cleats
And come and trample me.
Your heart is hard as stone or mahogany,
That's why I'm in such exquisite agony.

My soul is on fire,
It's aflame with desire,
Which is why I perspire
When we tango.

You caught my nose
In your left castanet, Love,
I can feel the pain yet, Love,
Ev'ry time I hear drums.
And I envy the rose
That you held in your teeth, Love,
With the thorns underneath, Love,
Sticking into your gums.

Your eyes cast a spell that bewitches.
The last time I needed twenty stitches
To sew up the gash
That you made with your lash,
As we danced to the Masochism Tango.

Bash in my brain,
And make me scream with pain,
Then kick me once again,
And say we'll never part.
I know too well
I'm underneath your spell,
So, Darling, if you smell
Something burning, it's my heart.
Excuse me!

Take your cigarette from its holder,
And burn your initials in my shoulder.
Fracture my spine,
And swear that you're mine,
As we dance to the Masochism Tango.

(hear it!)

I awoke on impact
Under surveillance from the camera eye
Searching high and low
The criminal mind found at the scene of the crime
Handcuffed and blind, I didn't do it
She said she loved me
I guess I never knew
But do we ever, ever really know?
She said she'd meet me on the other side
But I knew right then, I'd never find her

I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
It's never worth the pain that you feel

No more nightmares, I've seen them all
From the day I was born, they've haunted my every move
Every open hand's there to push and shove
No time for love it doesn't matter
She made a difference
I guess she had a way
Of making every night seem bright as day
Now I walk in shadows, never see the light
She must have lied 'cause she never said goodbye

I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
I'll just pretend she never was real
I don't believe in lovev I need to forget her face, I see it still
I don't believe in love
It's never worth the pain that you feel

No chance for contact
There's no raison d'etre
My only hope is one day I'll forget
The pain of knowing what can never be
With or without love it's all the same to me

I don't believe in love
I never have, I never will
I don't believe in love
I'll just pretend she never was real
I don't believe in love
I need to forget her face, I see it still
I don't believe in love
It's never worth the pain that you feel
