V-Day: Waste of money?

I heard on CTV News that a poll was conducted, asking people if they thought V-Day was a waste of money.
The numbers were pretty surprising! So, it got me digging online to see what I could find, and I decided to make this poll here to see what everyone else thinks, and see if we follow the norm. ;)

It's just a part of society's dictation of how people should relate to each other.

valentine's day is an overcommercialized holiday that was created so card companies could sell something in between christmas and easter.

Complete and utter waste of money and time. Yet another bloody commercial festival. By the way, I'm female (and attached, so I'm not bitter about being single or something).

It's a waste of an entire day and a waste of money.

I think it is a waste of money if money is what you choose to spend on it.

Also, like Kazcaper, my opinion is not based on bitterness.

Well my mom got me Abbey Road as a V-Day present, so I'm pretty happy about it. What's wrong with a day dedicated to love though? Love is all you need. :p
However the result, the commercialistic part of V-Day is the product of Capitalism. Eventually Capitalism gets it's hands on everything. Capitalism sucks, the only reason communism lost is because it is an ideal , not a realistic thing. :(

It isn’t a waste if your significant other gets you something of value…

I'd say that it's an over commercialised event and a waste of time. Mind you I am speaking as a bitter singleton so ask me next year and I might have changed my mind.

People should be considerate of their partners everyday, but it is nice that there is a day people stop to think about love and the people they care about. Call me an old softy.

THINK LESS< LOVE MORE!!

It's just a bit of harmless fun, as well as another chance to let your favorite people know you love them. I fail to see how that can be bad. :p

I love valentines day, im a little cheapskate and spent a tenner... shooosh!! but i love the day and yes chocolates and flowers are nice but thoughts of those that care are what really counts!! I would gladly trade anything i owned, including my computer (which in turn is NS, and NS general gone forever) to be with those i care about on valentines day and just have a nice day with them.

I don't think anyone's saying a day to reflect on loving those near and dear to you is bad. It's the commercial aspect that's in question, here.
I let my fiancee know she's important to me every day.
I live in such a manner that those close to me always know that they are.
I don't really need a set date to say, "Oh crap! I forgot! I better let people know I love them!" :p
Again, it's a nice idea in theory, but in practice has been ruined by capitalistic expectations of spending gross amounts of money... because for some reason a lot of people equate money spent with amount loved...
To me, I see an example (or many) in Hollywood, like Paris Hilton with that shipping tycoon, and the giant rock he bought her and say to myself, "That's not going to last." And it didn't. When you let money/gifts rule your heart, you've lost perspective on love I think..

I spent the money and the time and had a lovely evening with my girlfriend, and I didnt even get a blowjob. Nothing. what a goddamn waste. I could have stayed in and watched ER. Next year I'll just send a cheque to Hallmark and save myself some time and effort.

Money spent for a box of chocolates can be money spent on a box of condoms. Chocolates grow old and make you sick so you throw them out, condoms are fun for a while and you dispose of them.

I sense a metaphor!

As I posted on a previous thread:

If we can have Valentine's Day, why not a beer, steak and blowjob day?

If you spent more than $20-$40 on this day. You might as well bend over...

Last bump for this thread. I figured I didn't want the people who were actually out for V-Day to miss their chance to throw in a vote.
So, for those who were busy yesterday, here's your chance to say if you think yesterday was a waste of money! :)

short answer: not at all.

best money i ever spent :fluffle:
every penny of it... of which there were a lot of pennies  :p

but why would trying to make someone feel extra special for a day be a waste of money?
unless it didn't do that purpose... in which case you're either not an item, unlucky, or bought the wrong stuff

I just figure if you treat them like they're special all the time, you don't need one day... other than an anniversary. :) But that's more of a celebration of the length of a relationship, rather than it being about the need to tell someone you love them.
I just don't see why people need to have a dictated day that they should spend their money to tell people that you care... especially since the 'one day' means big money for jerks to take advantage of our sheep mentality and buying into the one day. :p

no, i agree that one shouldn't only do that on one day a year... not at all, but my point is: why fight it? some people seem to hate it with a passion because of this 'one day is not enough' mentality (or the overcommericalisation... but thats an issue with capitalism *cough*)... of course this is true, but just because the day exists it doesn't stop you from celebrating love and all that on other days as well
basically, i just think if the excuse is there to be extra slushy for a day, take it :)
doesn't mean you can't do it on other days of the year... but there's nothing wrong with celebrating v-day.
