Microsoft Equation Editor problem

Hi. Hope some of your tech gurus have a solution for me.

Right now, I'm using Word 2000 in Windows XP. Everytime I try to insert an object as 'Microsoft Equation 3.0' in any office application, I get a series of errors. Unfortunately I constantly need that function!

When I try to insert an equation, the first message is one that announces "Microsoft Equation Editor has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
There is the option to Send/Don't Send an error report to Microsoft. I don't bother.
The error signature I get from the 'click here' link here.

error signature:
eqnedt32.exe
AppVer: 1998.11.19.0
ModName:eqnedt32.exe
ModVer: 1998.11.19.0
Offset: 000114c1

I click 'Don't Send' and I get this message.
"Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Excel can't start the application required to open this object.
An error occured and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?
Yes/No"

If I click 'Yes':
There is a brief process where Office 'repairs' this feature.

Then it goes back to the first critical error message. "Microsoft Equation Editor has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

I click 'Don't Send' and the last prompt in the sequence comes up "Cannot start the source application for this object."

Can someone find a cause, a fix or a workaround for these series of errors?

Addition: I have uninstalled whole of office and installed it again. Thats not a fix.

Addition: I tried to run the eqnedt32.exe directly but the same error occurs, albeit without Microsoft Office doing updates. I even tried copying the files from a machine where the Equation Editor worked and running them on this machine, same error message.

Would if I could chief, But Equation Editing scared the be-jeebiz out of me.

Any more than Y=X+1 and my brain freezes up and needs rebooting.

Sorry I can't help, I'm not a windows user.

But for equations, I really really really (and more than that) advise you to use LaTeX. LovelyLaTeX :fluffle: :fluffle:

You could try reinstalling any of the programs involved with the problem. Starting with eqnedt32.exe

Or try another text editing package. I'm sure OpenOffice is available for windows. Or you could try MikTex, a LaTex implementation for windows; it's very good for making equations. It's not as pretty to work in, but the result is much better imo.

Yeah, I'm going to try to get OpenOffice - theres a program named 'Math' that can do everything Equation Editor can.

Only if you're a real masochist. I used that to write papers for quite a while. One day, while tweaking the column width, or some other silly parameter, I realized that no one else cared. Then I switched to Word, loaded the style template from the particular journal or conference that I want to write for, and write. No more typesetting! Just writing!

If I want a theta, I just write $\theta$ and it's there. And since I deal with math and logic a lot, I regularly need strange letters and symbols, so it's just that much easier.

The Equation Editor is a totally useless widget. Don't use it. It's very hard to use, and can't give the results you want.

latex does scale up.

Looked at this?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/167958/en-us

or try Math Type (which wrote Equation Editor for MS)

I understand completely. My degree is physics and my research is in control of large structures, so I sympathize with the matrix and symbol thing. There's an enhanced version of equation editor that allows a lot more flexibility. A few well placed buttons and a few well-chosen command keys make things like symbols and subscripts a little easier. Not as easy as LaTex, but I don't have the urge to make every document look 'just a little better'.

But in the final analysis, the user has to pick the tools he likes.
